10 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

If you’ve ever had questions about “Back to the Future,” Kirk Cameron has answers. The actor hosts “The Secrets of the Back to the Future Trilogy,” a behind-the-scenes featurette from 1990 in which the “Growing Pains” star explains the inner workings of Robert Zemeckis’ time-travel franchise.

Cameron, whose more recent work is a bit, um, different, reads letters from fans with a burning desire to know more about the beloved trilogy. The first of these asks whether hoverboards are real and, if not, when they will be; if only time travel itself were real and the concerned fan could visit 2016 to see that hoverboards now kind of sort of are but mostly just catch on fire and hurt people. Cameron uses the question as a segue into the special-effects work that went into the device, »

‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Why Tessa Thompson Was Cast as a Character Who Is ‘Blonde & White’ in Comics

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

As with Idris Elba in “The Dark Tower,” Tessa Thompson’s character in the upcoming “Thor: Ragnarok” was originally depicted as being white. In a new interview with Spinoff, director Taika Waititi goes into the reasoning behind the casting decision, saying that he wanted to “be more inclusive and provide a broader representation” with his Marvel film.

The director, whose “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” premiered at Sundance this year and is now in theaters, is aware that such decisions tend to be met with resistance from certain fans. He’s also confident that they’ll come around once they see the “Dear White People” and “Creed” actress’ portrayal of Valkyrie. “The fact that we even have to keep having this conversation is ridiculous, because we keep forgetting,” he adds. “Unless »

‘The Predator’: CAA Campaigning for James Franco to Star in Shane Black’s “Inventive Sequel” — Report

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Shane Black has gone out of his way to insist that his upcoming “The Predator” is less of a typical remake and more of an “inventive sequel.” What exactly he means by that distinction is but one of many unanswered questions about the anticipated project. Also on fan’s minds is who will be playing Quinn Mackenna, the new hero taking over for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch from John McTiernan’s 1987 original. (Spoiler: It probably won’t be Schwarzenegger.) The latest word is that James Franco is “very high on the list” to lead the new film.

Arthouse Audit: Woody Allen’s ‘Café Society’ Boosted by Kristen Stewart, But Not ‘Equals’

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Mid-summer brings the biggest limited opening of 2016, with a return to form by Woody Allen as new distributor Amazon Studios and partner Lionsgate pushed “Café Society” to numbers unseen since last December. It’s not at Allen’s top level, but a huge leap above his last two films as well as anything else so far this year.

For a totally different market, Dinesh D’Souza doc “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party” had a limited opening in Middle America with strong front-loaded initial numbers. The political doc goes wider this Friday and could see a better eventual total —via an entirely different audience—than Allen’s film.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (The Orchard) from New Zealand leads the films in wider release as it continues to build word-of-mouth success. “Captain Fantastic” (Bleecker Street) boasted a decent second weekend expansion and could end up at a »

If Steven Shainberg’s career as a director was helped by his Sundance breakthrough “Secretary” it hasn’t been easy coasting since then. Shainberg followed that film up with the Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. starring “Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus,” which, just like “Secretary,” has built up a loyal cult fanbase over the years. Alan Vega, 1938 – 2016

2 hours ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Alan Vega, half of the epochal punk electronic music duo Suicide, died yesterday. He was one of the greats. With Suicide partner Martin Rev, Vega laid the groundwork for industrial electronic music, and much more, as he mixed noise with melody, free-form floating song structures with the terse songwriting economies of doo-wop. The band — starting with its title — was a provocation, but also a salve (or, as Bryan McPeck and Matt McAuley from Are Weapons wrote in their interview with Vega, “optimistic, life-affirming shit”). Songs dealt with psychotic killers and social unrest and love and optimism. “Dream, baby, […] »

An opening that’s neither a homerun, nor a failure exactly. Sony is likely okay with the numbers, but maybe not as ecstatic as their official statements sound, as the as the […]

The last day of this year’s Star Wars Celebration closed out on Sunday afternoon in London with the much-anticipated Future Filmmakers panel, centered (appropriately enough) on the future of the “Star Wars” franchise as guided by Lucasfilm leaders Kathleen Kennedy and Kiri Hart.

The forward-focused panel promised to deliver all kinds of goods about the franchise’s still-untitled “Episode VIII” and their Han Solo standalone film, featuring appearances from “Episode VIII” director Rian Johnson and Han Solo helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Johnson, who recently wrapped his very first “Star Wars” film, offered few updates to the eager crowd, and while the expectation might be that Lord and Miller, who are just about to enter production on their own film, would provide even less, the chatty duo had plenty to say.
