Saw 8 Begins Shooting This Fall

6 July 2016 9:43 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After seven straight years of terrorizing moviegoers, it seems that the new horror icon Jigsaw is getting ready to strike again. We reported in 2013 that an eighth installment of the Saw franchise, entitled Saw Legacy was moving forward, and earlier this year, writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger came aboard to write the script. Today we have word that production may actually start this year in Toronto.

iatse873, which highlights a union of stage, theater and movie employees/operators, reveals shooting is set to take place between September 21 and October 21, with Dan Heffner and Oren Kroules, who have produced every Saw movie to date, listed as producers. It doesn't seem that a director is attached quite yet, but if production truly is starting in just over two months, we may be hearing much more about this mysterious project. No cast members are currently attached, and Lionsgate hasn't handed out a release date at this time. »

What’s Behind Wanda’s Interest in a Hollywood Studio?

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“Whatever you are hearing about Wanda and Paramount is not coming from Wanda,” one Wanda source told Variety on condition of anonymity. “It is most likely coming from the Viacom side.”

“But, frankly, we are not clear whether such a deal could go ahead. We don’t know if Viacom and Sumner Redstone would agree.”

Wanda and other ambitious Chinese groups have spent years examining the possibility of owning a Hollywood studio, and months looking at Paramount specifically. Now, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal, Chinese property to entertainment group Dalian Wanda is alone and in exclusive talks.

The company’s hesitation about confirming the negotiations is understandable. It is a matter of face. And anyway the talks may fail.

Other candidate buyers that have fallen by the wayside included China Media Capital, e-commerce giant Alibaba, and the state-backed China Film & Television Fund.

All were attracted by the growing strength of the China-u. »

China’s Wanda is Front-Runner to Buy Paramount Stake (Reports)

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

China’s Dalian Wanda group is the front-runner in talks to buy a 49% stake in Paramount Pictures from U.S. media conglomerate Viacom, according to reports.

Sale talks are still proceeding, according to the Wall Street Journal, despite resistance from Viacom’s controlling shareholder Sumner Redstone. Last month Variety reported Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman’s “deliberate, thoughtful and thorough” determination to keep the sale talks alive.

Contacted Thursday local time by Variety, Wanda said it was “unable to make any comment.”

Viacom announced earlier this year that it would seek bidders for a minority portion of the studio. Since then the fight for control between Redstone and Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman has intensified and had seemed to limit Dauman’s ability to go ahead with a Paramount stake sale.

In June Redstone attempted to change company bylaws so that a unanimous board vote would be needed for a complete or partial sale of the studio. »

Bernardo Provenzano, Sicilian Mafia Boss Whose Life Mirrored ‘The Godfather,’ Dies at 83

Bernardo Provenzano, the leader of the powerful Sicilian Mafia, whose life mirrored the characters and events depicted in Mario Puzo’s classic novel and Francis Ford Coppola‘s film versions of “The Godfather,” died in custody on Wednesday in Milan. He was 83. According to the New York Times, Provenzano “had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease, cancer and a stroke, and… had been hospitalized since 2014 under the supervision of prison authorities.” Known by many as the “Boss of Bosses,” Provenzano hailed from — that’s right — Corleone, Sicily, the same home town of the Vito Corleone in “The Godfather” series. ‘Mr. Robot’ Season 2: Rami Malek on Elliot’s Journey and the First Time He Smoked Pot

6 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

[Spoiler alert: This interview contains plot details for both parts one and two of “Mr. Robot’s” second-season premiere, “Unmask.” Do not read if you haven’t seen the episodes.]

Rami Malek came out of seemingly nowhere to become one of television’s most compelling leads as Elliot Alderson in USA’s cyberthriller “Mr. Robot.” Malek’s performance is what makes “Mr. Robot” fit together — warm, humane and relatable, even as it is unreliable, alienating and occasionally threatening. You’re never quite sure if you’re watching a hero or a villain.

Malek himself is a favorite for the Emmy nominations, to be announced early Thursday, for that very reason. When Variety caught up with him, he’s in the midst of a whirlwind of publicity, including an appearance on “The Today Show” in which a very enthusiastic fan jumped and waved at the glass behind him long enough that his co-star Christian Slater commented on it. “It’s a big day,” he tells Variety.

Wednesday night’s season 2 premiere of “Mr. Robot” — “Unmask,” parts one and two — opens in a world of chaos and change. But »

'Mr. Robot': Rami Malek Breaks Down That Shocking Death and Elliot's "Euphoric Mania"

[Warning: This story contains spoilers for the season two premiere of USA Network's Mr. Robot.] Control might be an illusion, but Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) is doing everything in his power to hang onto the facade.  In the season two premiere of Mr. Robot, Elliot operates under very different circumstances from the last time he graced the screen. He lives a quiet existence at his mother's house, grabbing meals with his Seinfeld-obsessed friend Leon (Joey Badass), doing chores, watching local basketball games, time-stamping his activities in a journal, and doing everything he can to stay away

Review: Elliot goes to war with 'Mr. Robot' in the riveting season 2 premiere

6 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Mr. Robot has returned for a second season. I already published some spoiler-free thoughts on tonight's two-hour premiere, so now it's time to get into the specifics, coming up just as soon as I've discovered Seinfeld... "And this is why I'm different: sometimes, my mask takes over." -Elliot The Mr. Robot season 1 finale made an interesting choice in skipping over what seemed like major pieces of the larger fsociety plot — how the Evil Corp hack went down, what happened to Tyrell Wellick — to focus on Elliot dealing with the knowledge that he was Mr. Robot, and vice versa. At the time, I felt this was the right choice, since the show is ultimately about Elliot and what's going on inside his head, and his epiphany about having multiple personalities was much more important than any plot mechanics involving secondary characters. "Unmask"(*) actually rewinds to show Elliot executing the hack while Wellick watches — marveling that, »

‘Mr. Robot’ Premiere: What’s a Smart Home and How Can You Get One?

(Some minor spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of “Mr. Robot” are below.) “Mr. Robot” is notorious for being dour, but the Season 2 premiere gave us a pretty fun scene, in which fsociety hacks the home of Evil Corp lawyer Susan Jacobs (Sandrine Holt). Yes, that’s right — they actually hacked a house. They turned lights on an off, made the projector screen turn on and show a political pundit giving a rousing screed, turned the thermostat way down and even turned up the heat of the shower while Jacobs was in it. All classic haunted house stuff, but grounded »

Orlando Firefighters Warned to Stop Feeding Disney Gators

Two months before a toddler was killed by an alligator at Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort, firefighters at the nearby Fire Station 3 were warned against feeding the nearly 500-pound carnivores. The Orlando Sun-Sentinel obtained emails sent by employees of Reedy Creek Emergency Services two months before 2-year-old Lane Graves was grabbed by a gator and dragged underwater, killing him. The emails revealed that firefighters were feeding gators near Fire Station 3, which is less than half a mile from the resort’s Seven Seas Lagoon, where Graves perished. Feeding alligators is illegal because it causes them to lose their natural fear. »

After five years, a landmark lawsuit that prompted some Hollywood studios, production companies and networks to change their labor practices regarding unpaid interns is finally close to a settlement … that will net most of the beneficiaries less than a week’s pay.
