Game of Thrones” led with the most Emmy nominations Thursday — 23 — but was closely followed by the FX limited series “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” which scored 22. FX also scored with the second season of “Fargo,” which had 18 nominations. “Game of Thrones” and “Simpson” also cleaned up in the acting categories. Review: ‘Mr. Robot’ Season 2 Premiere, ‘Unm4Sk.tc,’  Finds New Ways to fsociety

Spoiler-free Review: ‘Mr. Robot’ Season 2 Stays True to Its Weird Self

Last year, the debut season of “Mr. Robot” dominated the television conversation, but serialized television is still a “what have you done for me lately?” enterprise, and a great beginning only leads to heightened expectations for season two. The two-hour premiere does a brisk job of re-setting the pieces on the board and introducing new ones. Eliot, still missing three days of memory during which the Five/Nine hack shook the world’s financial stability, has gone home to live with his mother; he stays away from all computers and lives a strictly regimented life that is designed to keep Mr. Robot from causing any more trouble. Darlene is running fsociety actions, although she despairs that they’re only making things worse. Angela is ensconced in her new Evil Corp PR job, although it seems to be killing her soul. »

Chuck Lorre-Kathy Bates Marijuana Comedy ‘Disjointed’ Ordered to Series by Netflix

23 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Netflix has given a series order to “Disjointed,” a comedy from Chuck Lorre.

The multi-camera comedy stars Kathy Bates as a lifelong marijuana-legalization advocate who realizes her dream of running a pot dispensary in Los Angeles. Working alongside Bates’s character are her son, three “budtenders” and a security guard. All are high most of the time.

Lorre and David Javerbaum serve as writers and executive producers on the series, which received a 20-episode season-one order, from Chuck Lorre Poductions and Warner Bros. Television.

“Disjointed” is Lorre’s first non-cbs television show since ABC’s “Dharma & Greg.” He currently has “The Big Bang Theory” and “Mom” at the broadcast network.

Netflix has found success with its recent push into multi-camera comedies. According to measurement company Symphony Advanced Media, mutli-camera series “Fuller House,” from Warner Horizon, and “The Ranch” are among the service’s most watched original series.

TV Ratings: ‘Mr. Robot’ Season 2 Debuts Soft

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Mr. Robot” may be a hit with Emmy voters, but it still has some work to do to win over audiences.

The USA drama’s second season kicked off to a soft 0.4 rating among adults 18-49 Wednesday, according to Nielsen overnight numbers, down one tenth of a point from last year’s series premiere. In total viewers, the drop-off was more severe. The season-two premiere drew 1.04 million viewers, down 41% from the series debut. Those numbers tied the series low in the demo and represented a new series low in total viewers, though they are expected to rise in multi-platform and delayed viewing.

The super-sized season-two bow, which ran from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., received a big marketing push from USA. On Sunday, the cable channel surprised fans by making the first hour of the premiere available to view for a limited time on social-media platforms, including Twitter, Snapchat and YouTube.

Emmys: Nearly 25% of Acting Nominees Are Non-White, but Drama Still Lags Behind

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

For the second year in a row, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences can laugh at movies’ #OscarsSoWhite problem. Actors of color nabbed 18 of the major 73 acting nominations in the categories of lead and supporting performers in drama, comedy, and limited series. That’s just shy of 25%, and even an improvement over last year’s historic Emmys, where 16 actors of color were among the 75 nominees.

Every category for a lead actor featured a nominee of color: First-time nominee Rami Malek, who is Egyptian-American, broke into the club for lead actor in a drama, which last year was entirely white. Similarly, “black-ish”’s Tracee Ellis Ross broke the color barrier in lead actress for a comedy, which was also an all-white slate last year.

This year’s nominees were also more diverse behind the camera. Aziz Ansari, nominated for lead actor in a comedy for “Master Of None,” was also nominated for writing and directing; so was »

L.A. Rams Owner: ‘Why Would L.A. Not Have a Pro Football Team?’

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With the Los Angeles Rams taking the field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in six weeks, team owner Stan Kroenke has to marvel at the Rams’ 21-year exile from Southern California.

“Why would L.A. not have a pro football team?” Kroenke asked Thursday morning at the Variety-Sports Illustrated Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles.

Jon Wertheim, executive editor and senior writer at Sports Illustrated, moderated the panel.

Kroenke admitted that he was surprised that he was able to move the team from St. Louis. “We didn’t expect to have this opportunity thrown at us,” he said.

Kroenke said the key to the deal was being able to acquire the 300 acres at the site of the now-demolished Hollywood Park thoroughbred race track. He has announced plans for a $2.6 billion stadium complex at the site in Inglewood, but it’s not slated to open until 2019.
