Arthouse Audit: A24’s ‘Swiss Army Man’ Slices ‘The Neon Demon’

18 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

A24 is having a strong 2016. They started out winning Oscars for three films (“Room,” “Ex Machina” and “Amy”), took smart horror flick “The Witch” wide to great success, and now with “The Lobster ” and “Swiss Army Man,” can claim the two highest per theater average limited openings of the year.  And they’ve done what other companies seem not to be able to do: reached a younger audience quite different from those that have elevated such adult hits as “Eye in the Sky” and “Hello, My Name Is Doris.”

Among the elevated number of prime openings fleshing out the summer specialized release schedule, the surprise second best was “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (The Orchard), a New Zealand countryside story that could become a sleeper success with wider audiences.

The other shocker: the complete failure of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “The Neon Demon” (Amazon Studios/Broad Green), which despite major advance »

Watch A New Trailer For ‘Star Trek Beyond’ With Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba & A New Rihanna Song

6 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It’s going to be hard for “Star Trek Beyond” to escape the sadness of the death of one of the film’s stars Anton Yelchin, who passed away just a week in a tragic accident. But short of pushing the release date back, which is unlikely this close, it’s going to have to be business as […]

Recap: ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Season Finale Welcomes ‘The Winds of Winter’

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Who run the world? Girls. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss must have been immersing themselves in the teachings of Queen Bey, because by the end of Season 6 of “Game of Thrones,” women are ruling basically every land. The show, which has been described as “just tits and dragons” by guest star Ian McShane, just upended […]

Review: ‘Veep’ Season 5 Finale Forges a Brave New Future

Last Week’S Review: Review: ‘Veep’ Debuts Catherine’s Documentary, Shocks the World

Immediate Reaction

“Maybe it will ruin her parade.” With those words, we saw the first glimpse of happiness cross Selina Meyer’s face all episode. In someone else’s pain and disappointment, she found pleasure. She came close to a similar reaction when Tom James shockingly lost the presidency, but her own misfortune was tied to his, thus ruining any pure happiness the exiting President could cling to in her poorest hour.

The reason I bring this up is primarily to highlight what “Inauguration” focused on throughout: Selina Meyer through the impossibly clear lens of Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Granted, it’s not a stretch to define the series similarly, but the Season 5 finale took another in what have become a series of brave steps by refusing to put Selina back in the VP office. And to justify that choice, »

Watch: Jesse Williams’s Fierce Bet Awards Speech is Life-Changing

8 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jesse Williams, who’s starred on “Grey’s Anatomy” since Season 6, was honored with the Humanitarian Award at this evening at the Bet Awards — and took the opportunity to speak boldly. His comments are not just poetic, but represent a powerful teardown of white patriarchy in the era of Black Lives Matter.

In the space of just a few minutes, Williams speaks passionately about the recent police brutality targeted at black people, invoking Sandra Bland, Eric Garner and many other names we cannot forget. “The hereafter is a hustle,” he says to suggestions that black people need to wait for their chance at equality. “We want it now.”

“We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight »

Review: ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Finale Unleashes Epic, Hardcore Vengeance

8 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Every week this season, Indiewire will be bringing you a unique collection of viewpoints on “Game of Thrones,” as it is a show that elicits a unique sort of reactions. Our writers are well-versed in the world of the show and the culture surrounding it, and we look forward to seeing how their opinions fare in the cutthroat world of Westeros… Sorry, that is, the cutthroat world of television criticism.

Last Week’S Review: The ‘Game of Thrones’ ‘BastardBowl’ Brings About A Whole New World Order

What Happened This Week?

After an extended montage paying tribute to the show’s always on-point costume design, it’s time for another installment of “Law and Order: Special Sinners Unit.” Loras Tyrell’s trial is relatively short thanks to him confessing everything… and also relatively meaningless, because instead of attending her own court date, Cersei blows up the whole damn court. ‘Silicon Valley’: Season 3 Finale Goes Where The Series Has Never Gone Before

9 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Who saw that coming?

No, not the twist ending of “The Uptick,” “Silicon Valley’s” Season 3 finale — not exactly. Erlich’s (T.J. Miller) sneaky plan to save Pied Piper from the clutches of Gavin Belson (Matt Ross) did come out of nowhere, and even if savvy viewers were observant enough to put together the financial capabilities of Bachmanity and how it would save Richard (Thomas Middleditch) from squalor, predicting that ending would’ve been gutsy.

Why? Because Season 3 marks the happiest ending for “Silicon Valley” to date — arguably, the only happy ending. And not only that, but the decision to unite all our favorite characters under one roof trims the fat in a way the show was unwilling to do before.

Remembering the previous finales is a bit like recalling a great date that ended with, “Oh, did I forget to mention my boyfriend?” — something Jared wouldn’t understand because, »

Review: ‘Preacher’ Only Hints at Tragic Pasts, But Doesn’t Skimp on Bloodshed

In The Beginning

Hey, it’s the Cowboy again! Yes, the inscrutable cold open from episode 2 finally gets some narrative meat on its bones as the Cowboy’s sense of morality gets the better of him, costing him first his horse, then his family, whom he failed to deliver medicine to in time. This causes the Cowboy to take up his guns again, sort of like “Unforgiven” in miniature. Sure, it’s not clear what any of this has to do with what’s going on in the present day, but it at least has the decency to move at a good clip. Unfortunately, the rest of the episode isn’t so fleet-footed.

Say The Word

I know that last time I guessed (hoped) that the stranger aspects of the show would become more prominent this time around, but that doesn »

12 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The 2016 Bet Awards are officially underway at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, honoring the best in music, television, movies and sports from the past year. Hosted for the second year in a row by “Black-ish” co-stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, the show is giving some of our favorite films, from “Creed” to “Beasts of No Nation,” “Dope” and more, a chance to add some final hardware to their awards cabinets.

In addition to those three movies, the Best Movie category is rounded out by “Concussion” and “Straight Outta Compton.” The acting races pit Kerry Washington against Viola Davis, Michael B. Jordan against Idris Elba, and more. Samuel L. Jackson and “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams will both receive special honors, the former with the Lifetime Achievement Award and the latter with the Humanitarian Award. There’s also planned tributes to the late Muhammad Ali and Prince. »
