Shooting wide: 24mm vs 35mm?

Hi all,

Long-time reader, first-time poster. I'm primarily a portrait photographer and am now looking to buy a wide prime to complement my two-prime set (50mm and 85mm) - as much as I like working with these two primes, I'm feeling like my work is beginning to stagnate and I want some more flexibility in my choices. I know this is a question that is oft-asked, but wanted to see what everyone's experiences were with these two focal lengths? To me, it feels like the main difference is how much I might want to push perspective - the 35mm seems like it's quite similar to a 50 in that regard (maybe too much so), but a 24 feels like you have to get in way too close sometimes to make an image interesting (sometimes I feel like I have to get within a foot or two, or else I'm capturing way too much environment). I've tried using a 28 as a compromise, but frankly that feels like too odd a length - either a perspective-pushed 35 (when I don't want the distortion) or a long 24 (when I want the angle of view - for instance, if I'm inside). Any advice would be appreciated, and it definitely has to be a prime - I like to go as light and as fast as possible most of the time.

Thanks so much to the community!
