Freeform Developing Late-Night Show With Comedian Iliza Shlesinger (Exclusive)

23 September 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Freeform is stepping into the late-night arena.

The cabler is developing a late-night series with comedian Iliza Shlesinger, Variety has learned exclusively.

The late-night show will feature Shlesinger’s unique voice that reflects the audience and “what’s happening in the moment” with a fresh comedic spin. Shlesinger says the series will set itself apart from other shows in the genre because her voice has a feminine side to it, but she’s not afraid to be unabashed in her opinions.

“It has been my goal since I was a kid,” Shlesinger tells Variety of hosting a late-night show. “I used to take a recorder around and interview my parents and do impressions of my classmates as guests on my show. I started working on this goal in Hollywood years ago. I think comedy and the perception of women in comedy has evolved to a place where this show can finally be a reality on my own »

Judd Hirsch is cooking up — actually, make that baking up — something big at CBS.

The network has ordered 13 episodes of Superior Donuts, which stars the two-time Emmy winner as the thick-skinned owner of a small donut shop in a rapidly gentrifying Chicago neighborhood, TVLine has learned.

The half-hour, multi-camera comedy also focuses heavily on Hirsch’s “enterprising young employee,” played by The Eric Andre Show‘s Jermaine Fowler, who also serves as an executive producer.

Emmys the Perfect Time to Showcase Season’s Big Fashion Trends

15 September 2016 9:45 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Last year, fashionable lead-actress nominees Claire Danes and Taraji P. Henson picked looks flaunting chains, Kerry Washington dazzled in a metallic dress (hot off Marc Jacobs’ New York Fashion Week runway), and Tatiana Maslany nailed menswear in a Bouchra Jarrar couture cream tux. Here, top celebrity stylists weigh in on which trends will dominate the 2016 Emmy red carpet.

Prints

Micaela Erlanger, who’s previously styled fashion-forward Emmy contenders Tatiana Maslany and Michelle Dockery, predicts we’ll see plenty of prints. “Romantic florals and intarsia were all over the runways,” she says, also noting the trend’s migration onto the red carpet. “Take, for instance, Margot

Robbie’s Gucci gown from her ‘Suicide Squad’ tour.”

“The Emmys are always about color,” says Cristina Ehrlich, who has worked with Allison Williams, Anna Kendrick, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and expects this year’s nominees to take risks. Tara Swennen, who styled Julie Bowen in the lime-green Monique Lhuillier she »

Mascots review: latest from Spinal Tap's Christopher Guest does not go up to 11

15 September 2016 3:37 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

If you liked Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, you’ll enjoy the familiarity and warmth of Guest’s latest mockumentary, in which he uncovers the men and women in fluffy suits

In Christopher Guest’s Mascots, Jane Lynch addresses the camera and explains why she is among the most celebrated plush-suited minor league sports mascots of all time. During one clutch baseball game she led the fans in cheer while doing a split for an entire inning, dressed as a moose. Her dedication caused a tear in her inner tendon forcing her to undergo four hours of surgery and spend the rest of her days with one leg considerably longer than the other. You can read all about it in the book she’s selling, A Moose-ing Grace: An Ex-Mascot’s Guide to God and Success in Real Estate.

Industry Insiders Cheer Creative Arts Emmys’ New Two-Night Strategy

13 September 2016 10:15 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

After four and half hours of Creative Arts Emmy Awards action — a two-night affair dubbed “the junior prom” by presenter Jane Lynch — what have we learned?

• Emmy voters really, really love “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”

• They’re hopelessly devoted to “Grease Live.”

• “The Late Late Show With James Corden” is the late-night phenom to watch.

• “Making a Murderer” got under the skin of TV Academy voters.

• “Game of Thrones” is prepared to scorch everything in its path in a valiant quest for back-to-back Emmy domination.

The final tally for the 80-plus awards presented during the Sept. 10-11 Creative Arts ceremonies, as always, is a good bellwether of the victories to come at the main event — the Primetime Emmys on Sept. 18.

But this year, the TV Academy can count itself among the big winners, as industryites seemed to have universal praise for the decision to spread out the Creative Arts presentation over two »

Tiff Movie Review: Mascots

12 September 2016 9:53 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

On Saturday, expert mockumentarian Christopher Guest served up his latest treat, Mascots, to his devoted fan base at the Toronto International Film Festival. While devoted lovers of the famed Waiting for Guffman director will likely jump up and down and cheer the new offering, the rest of the world will find it simply recycles old materials and wonder what the big deal is about.

The film interviews and follows an assorted cast of eccentrics with a common passion: being mascots for a local minor league team. A world championship of mascots is being held in Anaheim, and all the pep squad ralliers with ambition are there for a chance to be discovered and make it big.

There’s an oversized plumber that plays with poo, a violent hockey fist that can give you the finger, and an aged dancer. They reflect in a way the personalities of their equally quirky portrayers. »

Toronto Film Review: ‘Mascots’

10 September 2016 11:11 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In Christopher Guest’s “Mascots,” there’s a funny scene in which the judges for the 8th World Mascot Association Championship in Anaheim, Calif. — a competition known as “the Fluffies” — call one of the 20 competing finalists onto the carpet for an alleged sin of political incorrectness. The judges include the ever-beaming Michael Hitchcock as a persnickety control freak in a sweater vest, Ed Begley Jr. as an old curmudgeon with a “micro-penis,” Don Lake as a geek version of J.K. Simmons, and Jane Lynch, with her never-less-than-hilarious cutthroat hauteur, as the author of a book called “A Moose-ing Grace: A Mascot’s Journey to God.”

The finalist who’s in hot water is Cindy Babineaux (Parker Posey), a broken-down belle in a frowzy dye job whose mascot character is Alvin the Armadillo, from a college in the heart of Mississippi. The trouble is that the team was once named the Leaping Squaws. »
