The Buzz: Until these domesticated animals launched with a $31 million overseas opening weekend, we were thinking The Secret Lives of Pets might become the first box-office misfire from Minions creators Illumination Entertainment. In truth, the movie's main competition will be Finding Dory, which has ruled over the U.S. box office for 3 consecutive weeks. To further attract family audiences, a new Minions short will be shown before the movie.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016)- Comedy

The Buzz: It's pretty clear that audiences don't dig Zac Efron in rated-R mode; Neighbors 2 brought in a third of the original's box-office take, Dirty Grandpa was an embarrassment for all involved, and We Are Your Friends was one of the biggest bombs of 2015. And can we talk for a second about this cast? Congratulations to Adam Devine for landing the role as the other Stangle bro, but do you buy Anna Kendrick as an "uncontrollable party girl?" Raise your hand if you'd rather see Kendrick do a mother-daughter comedy with Tina Fey, R-rated or otherwise.
Captain Fantastic (2016) - [Limited]- Drama

The Buzz: For my 10th birthday my father gave me a bunch of grown-up books about philosophy and math. So, I'm excited to see a movie about a similarly weird dad. Viggo Mortensen stars as Ben, a man who home-schooled his six kids in the country. When his wife commits suicide, the family is forced to leave their cocoon. His children soon discover that they are ill-prepared for the outside world. The film won the Un Certain Regard directing prize at the Cannes Film Festival and seems poised to become this summer's indie hit. - Sara

The Buzz: Salman Khan's first movie of 2016 comes on the heels of his incredibly successful last year, in which he conquered the box office with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Like Bajrangi, this underdog wrestling drama is being released over the Eid holiday, and its advance bookings are looking massive -- not just in India.
Our Little Sister (2015) - [Limited]- Comedy | Drama
A story that revolves around three sisters who live in their grandmother's home and the arrival of their thirteen-year-old half sister.
Director:Hirokazu Koreeda |
|

The Buzz: The latest from festival favorite Hirokazu Koreeda arrives with slightly less fanfare than his recent works; the best reviews say the story's subtleties must be glimpsed between the lines.
Zero Days (2016) - [Limited]- Documentary
A documentary focused on Stuxnet, a piece of self-replicating computer malware that the U.S. and Israel unleashed to destroy a key part of an Iranian nuclear facility, and which ultimately spread beyond its intended target.
Director:Alex Gibney |

The Buzz: Alex Gibney, the most influential political documentarian working today, returns with a horror story wisely timed near the end of President Obama's administration. See this with your favorite hacker.
Cell (2016) - [Limited]- Horror | Sci-Fi | Thriller
When a mysterious cell phone signal causes apocalyptic chaos, an artist is determined to reunite with his young son in New England.
Director:Tod Williams |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Eli Roth almost directed this Stephen King adaptation several years ago, but it sounds like he (wisely) dropped the project, clearing the way for Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) to take the reins with what should be the crown-pleasing reunion of John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, who of course turned King's short story 1408 into a minor hit a decade back. Having read a handful of reviews, it sounds like all the movie's best bits are in its admittedly effective trailer.
Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You (2016) - [Limited]- Documentary | Biography | History
A look at the life, work and political activism of one of the most successful television producers of all time, Norman Lear.
|
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: You start to form words about Norman Lear, and you remember that he's the writer, and you're just staggered by his contributions to culture and history. So it's fine to state, quite simply, that any documentary on his work is going to serve as a reminder that he was the greatest creative mind to ever make television, and there's so much more to the man than just that singular accomplishment. - Arno
