The GMs belong to a new generation of uber-lenses that prioritize performance at maximum aperture, including sharpness across the frame and correction of distortion and aberrations. Unfortunately, a side effect of such lens design seems to be reduction in fine tonal and depth rendering. This gives rise to comments from certain observers that the lenses produce images that are incredibly sharp and aberration-free, but at the same time flat, clinical or even digital (whatever that means). Not everyone sees it this way, but when you compare images from modern lenses with those from older lenses of simpler design, there are differences in rendering that seem obvious to some people. I think those differences are what is meant by "character."

That may explain why this lens seems to produce substantially sharper images wide open than even the FE 55. Available light portraiture, this is the lens that I would reach for.
