‘Freak Accident’ That Killed Anton Yelchin May Be Due to Recently Recalled Jeep

6 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Over the weekend, the tragic death of actor Anton Yelchin broke the hearts of fans and friends alike, an event made all the worse by the bizarre nature of the single-car accident that killed him. TMZ, who first broke the news of Yelchin’s passing, billed the event as a “freak accident,” but more details have emerged that paint the event in an even more upsetting and confounding light.

Auto-centric website Jalopnik reports that Yelchin died after his own vehicle, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, rolled down his steep driveway and trapped the actor against his own security gate at the bottom of the incline. As the website shares, Yelchin’s car was the same “model that Fiat Chrysler recently recalled after its unconventional gear shifter led to several documented rollaway accidents.”

Eli Roth To Make Studio Debut With ‘Death Wish’ Remake Starring Bruce Willis

Revenge is one of drama’s great motivators. From “Hamlet” to “Captain America: Civil War,” it’s often the main driver of a plot in films of all kinds, but the 1970s saw the development of a particular sub-strain of Revenge Movie, films that reflected the anger drawn from a society haunted by Vietnam and Watergate and […]

‘Game of Thrones': Ramsay Bolton Actor Is as Happy as You Are With Battle of the Bastards Outcome

8 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

(Spoiler alert: Do not keep reading if you did not see the “Battle of the Bastards”episode of “Game of Thrones”) “Game of Thrones” actor Iwan Rheon, who plays Ramsay Bolton, could not be happier with the outcome of the Battle of the Bastards. “I’m glad it happens as a fan of the show,” Rheon told Entertainment Weekly. “Jon Snow needs to win because otherwise there’s no hope left in the world. But it is interesting that it isn’t fair. And afterward, Ramsay still thinks he’s won. He’s so arrogant and self assured he thinks »

SPOILERS AHEAD: ’Penny Dreadful’: Fresh Off Its Most Shocking Death, The Show Is Officially Coming To An End

7 hours ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Spoilers ahead for the Season 3 finale of “Penny Dreadful.”

Is this really “the end” for “Penny Dreadful” fans? Last night’s Season 3 finale closed out with a genuinely shocking death, as leading lady Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives character was unexpectedly shot to death by John Hartnett’s werewolf character Ethan Chandler. The death, final as it seemed to be, was made even more clearly, well, final, when the show closed out with a funeral for Vanessa and a title card that read “The End.” (In the world of television and movies, deaths hardly ever seem to really mark the end, so forgive us for leaning so hard in to the finality of it all. This never happens!)

So,with the death of Vanessa, is the entire show itself really over? Yes.

This Game of Thrones Sansa theory is so wrong, it entirely misses the point

9 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Warning: spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 9, "Battle of the Bastards," follow... Let's be honest, much of the pleasure of being a part of the Game of Thrones fan community is the opportunity to theorize en masse. Someone will start a thread and others pick it up and, in a way, it's like creating an enormous lore-centric Mad Lib together. Sansa Stark has had one of the most significant character arcs of this season, so it's natural for fans to focus on what's next for her. Some feel that she may be primed to take the place of a certain character from the books, becoming the show's version of Lady Stoneheart. Others, our own Donna Dickens included, are now seeing a path that leads to a marriage between Sansa and Jon Snow in order for them to fully hold the North. And there are those who believe that Sansa »

This 'Star Wars Rogue One' Villain Doesn’t Want to Admit He’s a Villain

13 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

While it's technically correct that we don't yet know the true alliance of actor Ben Mendelsohn in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he's wearing an Imperial uniform and frankly, I wouldn't walk down a dark hallway with him. But unlike his co-star Mads Mikkelsen, Mendelsohn is at least trying to keep a secret. We're pretty sure Mendelsohn plays Director Krennic, an Imperial Military Director, in Rogue One (though others have submitted some interesting theories of who he else he might really be). And he rocks a badass cape. I know, I know. Good guys wear capes too. But on a recent trip to Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Bloodline actor was excited to talk about his entry into the Star Wars universe but wasn't eager to share details of the film or his role.     When asked how long he had to keep just his involvement a secret, the Australian actor said: "It felt like forever. »

Film Review: ‘The Death of Louis Xiv’

19 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If Robert Rossellini gave us “The Taking of Power by Louis Xiv,” then Catalan director Albert Serra offers a bookend of sorts by watching as power is taken from the Sun King — literally, in “The Death of Louis Xiv,” a claustrophobic and often grimly funny procedural that stays largely confined to the bedside of the debilitated monarch (played by Jean-Pierre Léaud) as he deteriorates during his final days, endlessly poked and prodded by the big medical brains of his court.

Closer to the waggish spirit of Serra’s first two features — the “Don Quixote” riff “Honor of the Knights” (2006) and “Birdsong” (2008), a deadpan take on the Three Wise Men — than it is to his arthritic 2013 Locarno winner, “The Story of My Death” (which incorporated elements of the Casanova and Dracula legends), “The Death of Louis Xiv” continues the director’s overall project of bringing larger-than-life figures down to human scale, »

'Spider-Man' and 'Ghostbusters' loom large in the plans of Sony Pictures Animation

21 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Sony Pictures Animation has always been the red-headed stepchild of studio animation arms. They’ve had a few big hits, a few mid-sized hits, and they’ve done a very good job of squeezing every possible penny out of the direct-to-video market with sequels to some of their titles. In the press release they sent out today, Sony made it clear that they’re doubling down on animation. Kristine Belson is the president of Sony Animation, answering directly to Tom Rothman, and she talked about letting artists drive the films they’re planning to make. It’s a pretty safe list overall, with an emphasis on pre-existing properties, and I have a hard time getting my head around how anyone is even remotely artistically moved by the idea of an Emoji movie. Some of the titles had already been announced, but there are new details on those, and some of the announcements were brand-new. »

TV Review: ‘Roadies’

37 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Remember concept albums? They still exist, but not quite in the form they took in the ‘70s and ‘80s, when rock musicians made double albums because a single album couldn’t hold all their great ideas. The problem was, in those bloated behemoths, there were rarely enough inspired notions to power one album; most double and triple albums were made to pump up the egos of the people who created them, and those gatefold sleeves, when actually acquired by members of the public, were often put to other uses.

The lumbering beast known as the double album has largely gone the way of the dinosaurs, but one can revisit that kind of tedious sprawl in “Roadies,” which feels like a Spotify playlist in search of a reason to exist.

The first episode of “Roadies” is more tolerable than the even longer pilot for the similarly themed ’70s rock drama “Vinyl,” but »

Scarlett Johansson's Next Comedy Outing Will Fight Michael Bay's Transformers

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Scarlett Johansson is certainly more well-known for being an action star than anything else, but she's set to lead the cast of some very funny women soon for Sony in Rock That Body. Besides Johansson, it boasts Ghostbusters' Kate McKinnon, Broad City's Ilana Glazer, and Workaholics's Jillian Bell. And we've just found out they'll be going up against the Transformers. The previously named Move That Body is now Rock That Body and Broad City's Lucia Aniello is set to direct with a script by Aniello and Paul W. Downs (who will also be in the film). The screenplay was on the 2015 Black List and feels like a little bit The Hangover and a little bit Weekend at Bernie's if you ask me. Deadline writes, "The raunchy comedy follows a group of friends whose wild bachelorette party goes so far off the rails, that a male stripper turns up dead. »

Eli Roth is ready to make a 'Death Wish' with Bruce Willis

1 hour ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Hollywood’s determined to remake Death Wish. And why not? If anything, the property seems more timely than ever. Joe Carnahan was on board as writer/director for a while, and then it looked like Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado were set to direct it. Today, it’s being reported that Eli Roth is now set to direct from a script by Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, working from Carnahan’s earlier drafts, with Bruce Willis still attached to star. The big winner here is Roth. I thought his last film Knock Knock demonstrated some growth from him as a filmmaker, and knowing that he’s going to be starting with a script that’s been worked on by writers as good as Carnahan and Alexander & Karaszewski is encouraging. What I’m really curious about is how he gets along with Willis. I assume they have to have met already to »
