Richard Linklater’s latest film “Everybody Wants Some!!” follows a group of college baseball players over the course of one weekend in 1980. Our audience surrogate is Jake (Blake Jenner), a hotshot high school pitcher, who soon meets his rambunctious teammates, who include the smooth-talker Finnegan (Glen Powell), cocky star pitcher Glen McReynolds (Tyler Hoechlin), stoner transfer student Willoughby (Wyatt Russell), and more. During his introduction to the campus lifestyle, Jake eventually meets Beverley (Zoey Deutch), an outgoing performing arts major, who shows him the ways of the artsy side of college life. Amidst all the drinking and competition, Jake witnesses how a malleable environment can beget individual adaptation, and how the mix-and-match qualities of college all but beg a student to embrace their own fluidity of self. Watch: Exclusive Clip From New Form Digital’s ‘Miss 2059,’ Starring Anna Akana

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Web content continues to be the best place for the discovery of diverse voices — and audiences are turning up. Anna Akana has 1.5 million subscribers to her YouTube channel, where she makes scripted advice videos with a humorous appeal. Similar in vibe to Grace Helbig, reigning queen of the “awkward older sister” YouTube genre, Akana, an Asian-American woman, seems much more politically aware. She discusses candidly her struggle with mental health issues (Akana’s sister committed suicide in 2007) and delivers non-judgmental lessons on how to “Check Your Privilege.” Her video “Why Guys Like Asian Girls,” which lambasts so-called “yellow fever,” has 3.4 million views.

The quick-witted Akana writes all of her content, including great one-liners: “The more attractive you are, the more cats a potential partner will tolerate.” Much like her contemporaries Helbig and Hannah Hart (Electro Woman and Dynagirl), she has set her sights on longer narrative content, beginning with the »

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Whether on a first date, at a job interview, or just having a casual conversation, everyone has encountered the question, “What’s your favorite TV show?” Some people have an automatic answer, while others have to contemplate for a minute. Especially now, in the age of peak TV, it can be tough to dig through tons of great TV shows and choose an all-time favorite.

To help narrow down the choices and answer this question, Very Good TV Podcast has compiled a list of tips to take into account.

Consider whether you’re answering subjectively or objectively. Be declarative. Don’t say, “Oh, there are just so many shows!” Don’t pretend you’ve never been asked before. Don’t be embarrassed by your choice — or qualify it.

For more advice, and to hear Ben and Liz break almost all of the aforementioned rules in defense of their favorites, listen »

‘Penny Dreadful’: Why This Great Series Finale Shouldn’t Start a Trend

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Penny Dreadful” creator John Logan is an expert at endings. From big, sweeping dramas like “Gladiator” and “The Last Samurai,” to ongoing stories like “Skyfall” and the first two seasons of “Penny Dreadful,” Logan is a writer who always seems to hit his mark in the end.

That’s why it comes as no surprise that Sunday night’s Season 3 finale of “Penny Dreadful,” “The Blessed Dark,” was a terrific episode of television – with one glaring exception.

What more could one ask for in a series finale? Simple: that we knew going in it was a series finale.

Rob Lowe on Grinding On After ‘The Grinder,’ and Why It Still Deserves Awards Love (Consider This)

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The funny thing about the Emmys is how long the campaign season actually runs. Even though the first round of voting takes place in June (with nominations announced on July 14), the PR machines kick in as early as February – for awards that aren’t announced until September 18. That means some Emmy “For Your Consideration” interviews are conducted long before stars and producers learn the fate of their shows.

Such was the case of Rob Lowe and his exquisite experiment, “The Grinder.” Indiewire spoke with the talented thespian a month before Fox axed the critically-hailed comedy, and — while we spoke again for the season finale — what he had to say at the time is relevant to what happened to “The Grinder.” We talked to him again after news of the cancellation hit, and the below interview represents a lightly edited transcript of those two conversations.

The second season of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s magnificent exploration of belief, faith and family included its fair share of bold moments. And then came “International Assassin,” the season’s eighth episode that tracked Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) into the afterlife; an afterlife set in a hotel where he donned a suit, became an assassin and had to »
