benefit of shutter soft release?

Just curious how many in the fuji forum use a soft release. I've never used one, but I see many here do.

I see conflicting information as to their usefulness. Some claim it reduces shutter press camera shake enough to gain a full stop, others say they see no difference, it's more of a fashion accessory.

If it really does help, I would probably try one. I have fairly steady hands, but I find myself mashing the shutter down unless I constantly remind myself otherwise. Of course, this often makes for softer looking photos at slower shutter speeds.
