Elka (Betty White) & Mamie (Georgia Engel) reunite their bowling team: Diane (Mary Tyler Moore), Peg (Cloris Leachman), & Angie (Valerie Harper). Joy, Victoria & Melanie date a professor (George Hamilton), director & surgeon.
If for no other reason than because the show was so limited in time (sitcoms today barely run 20 minutes without commercials) and clearly any audience would love to see the 5 for the entire program.
Asner and MacLeod could have easily appeared as one of the three ladies' dates (George Hamilton did show up as one of them), but then that would have been no fun not seeing them out with the 5.
Leachman was allowed a little leeway as Phyllis was so tightly wound.
Since White and Engels are show regulars, this left any sort of 'plot' up to Moore and Harper as bitter rivals from the old bowling team days and so we could see them interact again as well.
The most dominant factor would have been Phyllis and Rhoda's feud, but that would have shut Mary out completely, so thankfully the show didn't focus on doing that again.
Essentially, Mary and Rhoda were where it all began.
There are endless references to the old show, with Mary having the smile and she made it after all.
