In the meanwhilst, have a play with Linux Mint (Mate edition).

You don't say what hardware you have,
but if you have a spare hard disk, do it on that, dual boot will just confuse you.
Another option is to buy a modest SSD for a hundred bucks
and put it on there for some fairly vivid boot times.
Either way, you will need to lock in your "free" upgrade SOON
or end up paying later. This is a work around.

Forgot to ask in my original post in response to you: Once I've installed Win/10 and I've confirmed my digital entitlement and go back and reinstall Win/7 how do I then install Win/10 at some point in the future?

Months ago, I did an upgrade to Win 10 on a Win 7 laptop to have it registered on the MS activation servers as eligible for "digital entitlement", then went back to Windows 7.

About a week ago, I did a clean Windows 10 install, and it is still digitally entitled.  However, I am not absolutely certain the digital entitlement will extend past the free upgrade cut-off date, but from what I have read, it should.
