Emmy Awards voting has never been more complicated, with more series than ever vying for those coveted few slots in 2016. Why ‘The Goldbergs’ Is Must-Watch Comedy

16 June 2016 10:41 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Having just wrapped its third season, “The Goldbergs” seems to only get funnier with time—in large part because of its award-worthy performers.  What makes comedy so difficult, according to Head of Talent and Casting for Sony Television Dawn Steinberg, is that you need to “stay true to the most outrageous moments and make them believable.” And that’s exactly what star Wendi McLendon-Covey does so brilliantly as ’80s mom Beverly Goldberg. Opposite her is Jeff Garlin, whose background in improv adds wonders to the show’s dynamic ensemble. “[He’s] one of the most fun people to watch. He’s very paternal towards all the other people on the show and he really brings that out in each scene,” Steinberg says.  Round out the cast with supporting player George Segal and the rest of the gang, and there’s no doubt “The Goldbergs” is one of the strongest comedies to grace TV this season. For more on “The Goldbergs,” watch the exclusive clip below. And be sure to get more advice from Steinberg, only on Backstage.com. Inspired by this post? ‘The Goldbergs’ Scores Tribune, Sony Syndication Pact

15 June 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Tribune Broadcasting stations in 18 major markets have set a deal with Sony Pictures TV for rerun rights to the ABC domestic comedy “The Goldbergs” starting in fall 2017.

The deal cements “Goldbergs” status as the prime syndication-friendly comedy available to broadcast TV stations in the next few years. The drought in broad-appeal sitcoms coming off the broadcast networks has alarmed TV station managers, many of which rely on sitcom reruns as tentpoles of their late afternoon, early evening and late-night schedules.

Tribune stations taking “Goldbergs” include its outlets in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington, D.C. and Houston. All told the deal covers nearly 37% of U.S. TV households.

“ ‘The Goldbergs’ is a stand-out comedy with all-family appeal, growing ratings and buzz-worthy storytelling, making it a great fit for our stations,” said Sean Compton, Tribune’s president of strategic programming and acquisitions.

John Weiser, president of distribution for Sony Pictures TV, cited the show’s three consecutive seasons of ratings growth in primetime as a good sign of a healthy afterlife in reruns.

“Goldberg” reruns have already been made available for streaming on Hulu through a deal set last September. That makes the show a test case for sitcoms with the potential to juggle both a streaming and traditional broadcast syndication window.

The Hulu exposure likely cut down on the price Tribune was willing to pay to land the show, yet the scarcity of available sitcoms surely worked in Sony’s favor.

“It is poised for a long run on ABC and in syndication,” Weiser said.

“Goldbergs” is heading into its fourth season on ABC this fall. The series, created and exec produced by Adam F. Goldberg, is set in the 1980s and revolves around the coming of age story of a boy in a boisterous family. Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia and George Segal star.

2016 Emmy Contenders: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy

2 June 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

At this point, the question isn’t whether Julia Louis-Dreyfus will score her fifth consecutive nomination for her role as President Selina Meyer on the HBO comedy “Veep,” but whether her winning streak will end. The actress has watched her character go from the titular vice president to leader of the free world, collecting a string of statues along the way. While Candice Bergen managed to score five wins for “Murphy Brown,” even she didn’t do it in a row.

But there are some new faces poised to take the prize this year, from Golden Globe winner Rachel Bloom (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) to Amy Schumer (“Inside Amy Schumer”), who is on a hot streak herself. In addition, many actresses who have never scored a nom are coming off great second seasons, including Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”), Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”) and Constance Wu (“Fresh Off the Boat. »

2016 Emmy Contenders: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

1 June 2016 3:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When Jeffrey Tambor won the Emmy Award last year for his groundbreaking portrayal of transgender Maura Pfefferman on “Transparent,” he acknowledged backstage that though his show is a comedy, it deals with very serious issues. “Lives are at stake,” he said. “This (award) is bigger than me.”

Tambor could well repeat his win this year, though he faces strong competition, often from other actors who combined pathos with their comedy. Previous nominees Anthony Anderson, William H. Macy and Will Forte all manage to find laughter while tackling such topics like racism (“Black-ish”), alcoholism (“Shameless”) and the extinction of the human race (“The Last Man on Earth”). Freshman series “Master of None,” “Difficult People” and “Baskets” gave leading men Aziz Ansari, Billy Eichner and Zach Galifianakis, respectively, the chance to show a more serious side.

Previous nominees who could repeat include Don Cheadle, who already has four consecutive nominations for “House of Lies, »

Ratings: ‘Empire’ Hits Six-Week High With Finale, But Well Down From Last Year

19 May 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Fox’s “Empire” may not be quite as hot as in its scorching first season, but it had a strong finish to season two on Wednesday, hitting a six-week high and delivering the top demo score for any television series this month.

The NBA again provided tough competition on this night, with the second game of the Western Conference Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Golden State Warriors averaging a big 5.9 overnight household rating on TNT. This was down from Monday’s 6.7 for a more competitive contest, but it was up 34% from the Game 2 in the West two years ago on TNT (4.4 for Oklahoma City-San Antonio) and 28% larger than last year’s Eastern Conference Finals on the network (4.6 for Cleveland-Atlanta).

Looking at Wednesday’s broadcast action, according to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “Empire” averaged a 4.0 rating/13 share in adults 18-49 and 10.8 million viewers overall, rising more than 10% week »

10 Things We Learned From the ABC Upfront Presentation

17 May 2016 3:23 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

ABC’s upfront presentation on Tuesday featured a little humility, a milestone moment for the TV industry and a whole lot of Priyanka Chopra.

ABC brass acknowledged the network’s weaknesses during the past year and vowed to improve with a range of new series, including an increase in the volume of comedies and the decidedly male-skewing “Designated Survivor” drama starring Kiefer Sutherland.

Here are 10 things we learned from ABC’s presentation at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall:

Disney/ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood opted for the humble approach in addressing media buyers about the network’s performance during the past season. Like his peers at NBC and Fox, Sherwood referenced the massive changes in the industry — “this is a defining moment for our networks and for television” — but he also acknowledged ABC’s third-place position. “We believe in better,” he assured them.
