Watch New Clip For Studio Ghibli’s When Marnie Was There

When Marnie Was There

Studio Ghibli‘s When Marnie Was There finally arrives in UK cinemas this Friday June 10th, screening in both Japanese and English, the English versions’s star-studded cast includes Kiernan Shipka, Hailee Steinfeld, Kathy Bates, Ellen Burstyn, Catherine O’Hara and John C. Reilly.

The clip shows the first time our heroines meet, as Anna is greeted by Marnie at the mysterious house across the lake.

A touching tale of love, loneliness, and friendship, When Marnie Was There is the story of an emotionally distant adolescent girl, who upon being sent to live with relatives in the countryside becomes obsessed with an abandoned mansion, and infatuated with a girl who lives there; a girl who may or may not be real. The film has been described as “Ghibli Gothic,” with its moonlit seascapes, glowing orchestral score, and powerful dramatic portrayals that build to a stormy climax.

The film will be released as part of the Studio Ghibli Forever season, a complete retrospective of the animation house’s work over the last 30 years. Studio Ghibli Forever will run until July 28th.

We caught a preview of this film earlier this week and we where impressed. The film has touches of the great Satoshi Ken (paprika, Perfect Blue). You really feel you can feel the wind blowing in your faces, the soft grass on your feet. It’s a charming that’s more at home with Only Yesterday (released cinematically first time in UK last week) than the fantasy type films Studio Ghibli is renowned for. wonderful film which we recommend see in English subtitles however if your not comfortable watching there will be a English dubbed version too. When Marnie Was There is mean’t to be Studio Ghibli’s last film but as we know The Red Turtle the Ghibli co production is now on the cards.

When Marnie Was There will be in UK Cinemas from tomorrow 10th June.
