Box Office: ‘Finding Dory’ Swims to Record $9.2 Million on Thursday Night

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Finding Dory” has opened with a record-breaking $9.2 million on Thursday night.

The Disney/Pixar sequel had the biggest Thursday debut of all time for an animated film, easily topping “Minions” ($6.2 million) and “Despicable Me 2” ($4.7 million) as well as Diseny-Pixar hits “Toy Story 3” ($4 million) and “Inside Out” ($3.7 million). It also more than double the Thursday night launch of Disney’s “The Jungle Book” at $4.2 million.

Action-comedy “Central Intelligence,” teaming Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, launched with a solid $1.8 million during Thursday previews.

“Dory,” the sequel to “Finding Nemo,” will easily top $100 million, and may debut with more than $115 million in 4,305 North American theaters this weekend. That would establish a new opening record for a Disney/Pixar release, topping “Toy Story 3’s” $110 million launch in 2010.

“Dory” may even challenge 2007’s “Shrek the Third,” which currently holds the record for the largest North American opening weekend for an animated movie with $121.6 million. »

James Wan to Direct ‘MacGyver’ Premiere

17 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

James Wan is set to direct the premiere episode of CBS’ “MacGyver” reboot.

An executive producer on the series, Wan had originally been set to direct the pilot, but had to back away from it because of his feature film schedule. Since the show was picked up to series, CBS added four new series regulars to the show, including former “Rush Hour” star Justin Hires, and decided to scrap the original pilot and shoot a new premiere episode. A window in Wan’s schedule will allow him to direct the new premiere.

Wan, a fan of the original “MacGyver,” had been in talks with New Line as far back as 2012 about directing a feature film based on the series. His most revent feature, “The Conjuring 2,” dominated at the box office last weekend, opening to $40.4 million. New Line revealed this week that it is working on a “Conjuring 2” spinoff, “The Nun, »

Jason Sudeikis Disqualified From Emmy Consideration for Fox’s ‘Last Man On Earth’ (Exclusive)

23 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When the 2016 Primetime Emmy ballots went online Monday, Jason Sudeikis was included among the list of guest actors in a comedy series for his critically acclaimed turn on Fox’s “The Last Man On Earth.”

There’s just one problem: Under Emmy rules, Sudeikis isn’t a guest star.

Because he appeared in 11 of the second season’s 18 episodes as Mike Miller, astronaut brother of the titular character Phil Miller (played by Will Forte), he far exceeds the current threshold for guest consideration.

Per Academy rules: “It is the decision of the entrant whether to enter as a lead, supporting or guest performer. However, only performers appearing in less than 50% of the eligible episodes are able to submit in the Guest Performer categories.”

Although Sudeikis would be properly categorized in the supporting actor race, it’s too late to make the switch now that voting has commenced, and he will therefore be disqualified from consideration. (Again, per Academy rules: “If an entry is made in the wrong category and the error is not discovered until it goes to the voters on the nomination ballot, it will be disqualified.”)

Since the category’s inception in 1986, the rules and regulations defining guest performers have varied wildly throughout the years. In 1992, a movement to recognize guest performers on the primetime telecast resulted in guests competing against full-time leads (Christopher Lloyd won outstanding actor in a drama series for a single episode of “Road to Avonlea” and the experiment ended). And in recent years, winners in the guest categories have included performers booked for season long arcs (like John Lithgow’s 2010 win for season four of “Dexter”).

The current rule was instituted in 2015, the year after Uzo Aduba won outstanding guest actress in a comedy for the first season of Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” despite appearing in 11 out of 13 episodes and essentially functioning as a series regular. Aduba went on to win outstanding supporting actress in a drama at last year’s Emmys.

There is still some confusion about the shift in what constitutes a guest performance even among industry insiders. Pundits considered Diana Rigg a shoo-in for a fourth consecutive guest actress nomination as Lady Olenna Tyrell on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” this year, but the actress will appear in five of the season’s 10 episodes, pushing her into the supporting field. Only a handful of actors from the massive “Thrones” ensemble are submitted by HBO each year (the rest can submit on their own). Rigg is not on this year’s ballot.

Under the current rules, Rigg would also not have been eligible as a guest star in the show’s third season, when she received her first nomination.

Meanwhile, “Breaking Bad” veteran Mark Margolis is entered in the supporting race for reprising his Emmy-nominated guest role as the villainous Hector Salamanca on “Better Call Saul.” The actor appeared in exactly half of “Saul’s” second season (five out of 10 episodes), with minimal screen time in several of those. It’s difficult to argue he’s a supporting player to the same degree as “Saul” co-stars Jonathan Banks or Michael McKean, but the rules are the rules.

Over at AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” series regulars Ross Marquand and Tovah Feldshuh have been entered in guest categories this year because they each appeared in six episodes of the 16-episode season. But guest star Merritt Wever vies in supporting actress because she appeared in nine.

What happened with Sudeikis was apparently a case of the studio, 20th Century Fox Television, evaluating the role under the Academy’s old guidelines, and judging it a guest turn. He was billed as a “special guest star” for every episode, and in three of the 11 episodes he appeared onscreen for less than a minute. But his role grew in importance as the season progressed, his character had a bottle episode essentially all to himself, and he was a crucial participant in the season-ending arc.

The TV Academy does not vet submissions for accuracy; they simply go by the information submitted on entry forms, which would have noted that Sudeikis appeared in less than 50% of the episodes. No performers were disqualified from the ballot last year.

Dean Devlin on ‘Stargate’ Reboot: ‘It’s to Let Us Finish Telling Our Story’

20 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Two years before “Independence Day” blasted the doors off the box office, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were already exploring alien life with “Stargate.”

The film went on to gross almost $200 million worldwide and spawned three live-action spinoff series, which ran for a cumulative 354 episodes.

“At the time that we made it, every single studio in Hollywood had told me that science fiction was dead,” Devlin recalls. “And Roland and I really love science fiction, so I think that’s partly why it worked and resonated. It wasn’t a cynical attempt to try and make something that was crowd-pleasing.”

Despite “Resurgence” being Emmerich’s first official sequel, “Stargate” was initially conceived as part of a trilogy, Devlin says, “and because of what happened with the rights and changes at the studio and all kinds of strange things, we never got to do parts two and three.”

Viacom Expects to Gain Ad Volume as TV’s ‘Upfront’ Bubbles (Exclusive)

34 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Viacom, in the midst of a bruising legal fracas involving its top management and controlling shareholders, expects to nab a greater volume of advance ad commitments as part of its annual “upfront” talks for commercial time, a sign of a market that is shaping up to be healthier than TV has seen in years.

The owner of Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV expects to secure a 10% increase in volume from advertisers, according to a person familiar with the situation, and pressed for deals that called for an increase of 7% to 8% in the rate of reaching 1,000 viewers, also known as a Cpm. The measure is an integral one in these annual talks between TV networks and Madison Avenue. Last year, Viacom secured a volume increase of just 3% to 4% and did deals calling for CPMs between 3% and 4%.

The results suggest that TV networks are navigating through a stronger upfront session than they »

13 movie sequels that bombed at the box office

50 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In the sequel-reboot-remake-revival machine that is Hollywood, follow-ups to proven properties are made because they feel like safe bets. But sometimes that plan to connect with an established audience falls utterly flat. This has been the case a lot in 2016 — audiences are turning particularly anti-sequel, or perhaps just having less tolerance for sequels that aren’t much good. Zoolander 2, Alice Through the Looking Glass, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and Divergent Series: Allegiant have all flopped. Pixar’s latest sequel won’t have to worry about that. Opening in theaters today, Finding Dory is set to become the second major sequel success story of the year (after fellow Disney film Captain America: Civil War). Box office experts are predicting it will break the opening weekend record for an animated film and that it will surpass Zootopia’s total to become the fifth animated movie to make more than $1 billion worldwide. »

Here's the trailer for 'David Brent: Life on the Road'

It's been a few years since The Office went off the air in the UK but its cult status is still going strong. Strong enough, in fact, to warrant a spinoff movie that will premiere on Netflix in 2017. David Brent: Life on the Road features Ricky Gervais reprising his role as David Brent, the self-deluded, cringe-inducing general manager at Wernham-Hogg, but this time he's out of the office and living his dream of being a touring rockstar.  Life on the Road, also filmed mockumentary style, takes place 15 years after the events of The Office as a crew follows Brent touring the country. While the movie may not have the initial charm of the original Office episodes, it definitely features the secondhand embarrassment that drove the series. The movie premieres on Netflix next year.  »
