‘Barry Lyndon’ New Trailer: Stanley Kubrick’s Classic Film Gets Update Treatment From the BFI – Watch

35 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Just as vibrant and urgent as it was when it debuted in 1975, Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon” is perhaps the perfect historical epic to be re-introduced to a brand new audience. Masterfully crafted and featuring a slew of all-time performances (you’ve scarcely seen the full depth of Ryan O’Neal’s talents if you haven’t seen the feature), the Oscar- and BAFTA-winning film really does hold up (and it was overlooked during its own time), and the BFI is banking on that appeal to help send a new re-release over the top.

In advance of the new UK re-release of the film, the BFI and Warner Bros. commissioned Ignition Creative London to craft a new trailer for the film, one that builds in a contemporary feel without sacrificing the film’s authenticity (and includes »

Pets! What do they do all day? Universal’s animation arm, Illumination Entertainment, has bravely tackled this exact question with its newest offering, “The Secret Life of Pets.” Directed by Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney, the film features an all-star cast of very funny voice talent, from Louis C.K. to Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate to Hannibal Burress, Lake Bell to Ellie Kemper and many, many more to tell the story of some house pets who go decidedly off the leash on a frisky adventure that pits them against a wily pack of unhappy animals. Here’s hoping for a happy ending.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Edward Snowden Collaborate On Tech Video, Ask Fans To Help Create Art Project — Watch

44 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s production company HitRecord started a project called “Are You There, Democracy? It’s Me, The Internet,” which examines the power and influence technology can have over day-to-day democracy in modern society. HitRecord recently solicited answers from the public regarding the question, “Is technology good or bad for democracy?” Many have provided their own video responses to the question, but one special person provided his own thoughts that required a bit more attention. Edward Snowden, the former CIA employee who leaked classified information from the Nsa that revealed the true nature of their global surveillance program, gave his answer to the question in which he ultimately expressed optimism about technology’s effect on democracy.

Inspired by Snowden’s response, Levitt and HitRecord are seeking help from fans, artists, and media collaborators alike to make a short film based off Snowden’s response. The idea is to visualize and »

How This Indie Filmmaker Explored the World of Fan Fiction to Find His Story of an Outsider

47 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Editor’s Note: Texas filmmaker and Dp Clay Liford has been on multi-year journey into the world of fan fiction to make his new film “Slash,” which premiered at SXSW and is screening Sunday night as part of the BAMcinemaFest. We asked Liford to reflect on his experience of finding his story. What we got was this wonderful essay about the joys of research and exploring a sub-culture in creating a unique cinematic world.

I’ve always been attracted to characters who lived on the margins. Not necessarily outsiders with a capital “O.” Not your James Dean types. More just really passionate people heavily invested in things the general population may not really “get.” As a comic book convention kid who was pretty secretive about his nerdy interests all the way through high school, I felt the insular fandom community was the perfect conduit »

In celebration of the release of “Finding Dory,” the sequel to Pixar’s 2003 animated underwater adventure movie “Finding Nemo,” Cinema Sins has posted a hilarious nine-minute YouTube video pointing out 55 “sins” committed by the makers of “Jaws.”

What kind of “sins” are we talking about? The video takes the filmmakers to task for everything from stacking actors’ names in a confusing manner (see below) to the strange way the shark decides which children to eat in the movie.

“All these tasty legs just dangling around in the water for me to eat,” the video’s narrator says. “I shall go after the kid on the raft! His mom will be the most pissed!”

Some of the 55 sins explained in the video include the way the shark seems to play with its food by dragging people on the surface of the water instead of immediately taking them under, to how Amity »

Eastern Effects: The Fight to Save The Brooklyn Home of ‘The Americans’ Is Brought To Mayor de Blasio’s Doorstep

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio was running for the highest office in New York City, he promised to build on Mayor Bloomberg’s legacy of supporting the continued growth of film and television production in the city by helping the film industry spread into the outer boroughs. With cleanup of the Gowanus Canal threatening to close Brooklyn-based Eastern Effects’ main facility – including their main sound stage and productions office that have served as the home of FX’s “The Americans” – many in the New York film industry showed up at City Hall on Wednesday to call on the mayor to deliver on those promises.

“Last Thursday the Epa made it official, our studio, which we’ve spent invested years of our lives and millions of loaned dollars, will be demolished for a temporary staging site for Gowanus Canal cleanup. We are here today to call on the city to step in and save us, »

Review: ‘Orange is the New Black’ Season 4 Will Wreck You (In the Most Important Ways)

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Year by year, things keep getting worse and worse for the Litchfield Federal Penitentiary inmates, who have become the one fucked-up TV family we always look forward to visiting. It’s as much a testament to Netflix and creator Jenji Kohan, for showcasing the show’s diverse cast of incredible actors, as it is the power of television, which lets our relationships with characters, as technically one-sided as they might be, bloom and grow.

Like any relationship allowed to blossom, the potential for heartbreak is real. This year, that’s more true than ever.

Season 4 begins moments after the transcendent beauty of the Season 3 finale, picking up with the creation of bunk beds in the dorms. “Orange” thus immediately takes on the issue of prison overcrowding by immediately doubling the occupancy of the prison without additionally addressing »

‘David Brent: Life on the Road’ Trailer: Ricky Gervais Revives His ‘Office’ Character For Mock Rock Doc

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Ricky Gervais revives his most iconic character David Brent from the influential BBC series “The Office” in the new film “David Brent: Life on the Road.” 12 years after the initial documentary, the former paper salesman returns to the limelight in a “rock ‘n’ roll documentary” as Brent goes on a self-funded tour with his band Foregone Conclusion, all the while still a traveling salesman. The trailer promises plenty of cringe-worthy, painful humor that was a staple of the original series as Brent’s lack of filter or self-awareness puts him and the band in uncomfortable situations. Will Brent finally come to terms with the pitiful reality of his own life or will he keep riding high on delusion touring the country as a “rock star.” Watch the trailer below to find out.
