The 40 foot sperm whale that has been floating around the Jeffrey's Ledge, Ipswich Bay area has stranded on a clam flat in the Essex River. It had been sighted for several days and it has finally come to rest brought in the the incoming tide in the Essex River. The sperm whale usually inhabits deep water and is a very unusual sighting in this area. The whale was 40 feet long with approximately a 11 foot wide fluke. The sex was undetermined because of damage to the body. The lower jaw was removed from the body which is in violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
