Emmy Awards: In Praise of Supporting Actors Who Stand Out From the Crowd

53 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Showtime recently announced its remake of “Twin Peaks” will include a cast of 217 actors. I pity whoever has to assemble that call sheet.

It’s hard enough these days for shows to stand out from the pack. Best of luck to the actors. The larger the cast, the harder it is for an actor to get any attention. And this year’s supporting actor and actress races are shaping up to be even more competitive than many of the lead races.

With A-list talent flocking to TV, the rise of the star-studded ensemble has certainly benefited TV fans, who get to see an incredible caliber of talent in choice roles. But what’s even more satisfying — and surprising — are the breakout performances from those names you might never have heard of before.

TV Movie and Limited Series Actor Nominees Could Line Up With Oscars

53 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When it came to the lead acting races in last year’s limited series or movie category, the women mounted an impressive lineup. Three Academy Award winners (Frances McDormand, Jessica Lange, and Emma Thompson) and three Oscar nominees (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, and Felicity Huffman) competed for the top prize, which went to McDormand for “Olive Kitteridge.”

This year, it looks to be the men’s turn, with a surprising number of Oscar nominees and winners eligible in the category, along with some big-name star power flexing its muscles. Academy Award winners in the running for lead actor include Anthony Hopkins (“The Dresser”), Cuba Gooding Jr. (“The People V. O.J. Simpson”), Richard Dreyfuss (“Madoff”), and Timothy Hutton (“American Crime”).

They will face considerable competition from Oscar nominees like Benedict Cumberbatch, who has already won an Emmy for his role in “Sherlock,” and Ian McKellen, who goes head-to-head with Hopkins in “The Dresser. »

‘Veep’ Returns To Emmy Polls With A New Showrunner But Same Edge – Awardsline

How many shows lose their showrunner after they finally strike Emmy gold in one of the top categories? That's what happened with Veep, which took home the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy last year (to add to a plethora of Emmys including four Best Actress trophies for Julia Louis-Dreyfus), offering a sweet swansong to creator Armando Iannucci. But Iannucci's departure was on good terms—he simply wanted to be closer to his family in the UK—and the HBO show turned to Seinfeld… »

‘Real O’Neals’ Star Noah Galvin Calls Colton Haynes’ Coming Out ‘F—ing P—- Bulls—’

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“The Real O’Neals” star Noah Galvin slammed “Arrow” actor Colton Haynes’ method of coming out in a controversial and canid interview with Vulture.

Galvin, who plays a gay teen on the ABC comedy, didn’t hold back, calling Haynes’ announcement that he’s gay in a recent EW interview “f—ing p—- bulls—.”

“That’s not coming out,” Galvin said when Vulture noted that “he didn’t actually say he was gay.” “That’s f—ing p—- bulls—. That’s like, ‘Enough people assume that I sleep with men, so I’m just going to slightly confirm the fact that I’ve sucked a dick or two.’ That’s not doing anything for the little gays, but giving them more masturbation material.”

ABC didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The actor also said everyone in the “glass closet” — the closeted gay community in Hollywood — should »

Oscar Isaac, Paul Haggis Bonded Over Building Story of an Everyman ‘Hero’

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Paul Haggis said yes to directing “Show Me a Hero” before he’d even read the script. Oscar Isaac took a little more convincing.

The director and star of the HBO miniseries wound up bonding during a trying four-month shoot in Yonkers, N.Y., that was unlike anything either had tackled before.

The subject matter of “Hero,” written and produced by “The Wire’s” David Simon and William Zorzi, was highly unusual in its ordinariness. The six-hour mini tells the story of a racially charged fight over the construction of a public housing project in the city of about 200,000 that lies about 15 miles north of Manhattan. It was adapted from Lisa Belkin’s 1999 book of the same name.

Isaac plays the central figure, Nick Wasicsko, the 28-year-old wunderkind mayor who bravely faces a test of will, law and principle as the debate over where to build the federally mandated housing »

Fox Bids To Push Super Bowl Ad Prices Past $5 Million (Exclusive)

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Fox wants to kick the cost of Super Bowl advertising over a new line.

Fox Sports is seeking more than $5 million for a 30-second commercial in its 2017 broadcast of Super Bowl Li, according to people familiar with the situation, a level that would raise the price tag for ad inventory in what is usually the nation’s most-watched annual TV event into the stratosphere. Other networks may have secured $5 million for a few commercials in the gridiron classic, but if Fox has its way, each ad in the game will fetch the princely sum – and possibly more.

The effort does not come without risk. In 2014, NBC made a bid to sell Super Bowl commercials at $4.5 million a pop, a 12.5% hike from what Fox had sought in the year prior, and worked until just a few days before its 2015 broadcast of Super Bowl Xlix to sell out its inventory.  CBS fared »

The contest, which was announced this January, drew over 1,000 applicants. 16 winning scribes have been selected.

To be considered, writers had to submit their original pilots to The Black List’s website. The strongest pieces — both half-hour and hourlong content — were shared with studios, networks and production companies that were tasked with choosing writers with whom they’d like to work.

This year marks the inaugural contest for the Austin-based television festival, which kicks off today.

Base FX @ 10: A Crazy Dream Became China’s Leading VFX Studio

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Christopher Bremble remembers clearly the first piece of advice he received from someone already on the ground in Beijing when he decided to set up Base FX there 10 years ago.

Over dinner in the Chinese capital, Bremble’s guest, an industry veteran, tried to keep a straight face as he declared: “It’s still not too late to get out!”

Bremble widely ignored that advice. A decade later, the cinema industry in the world’s second-largest economy is unrecognizable, with grosses growing on average by around 48% per year. And Base FX has placed itself at the forefront of the industry’s development in China.

Base entered a deal with Industrial Light & Magic nine years ago. It is exclusive to Ilm on Hollywood studio films, and in exchange, Ilm has helped Base sharpen its skills. Base has been a major contributor to Ilm’s biggest tentpoles, including the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens, »
