American Pastoral Trailer Marks Ewan McGregor's Directing Debut

27 June 2016 7:46 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Actor Ewan McGregor has certainly been keeping busy lately, filming his long-awaited sequel Trainspotting 2 and also signing on for his first major American TV role, starring in Season 3 of FX's Fargo. The actor is also getting ready to debut his directorial debut American Pastoral, with the first trailer arriving over the weekend. The first-time filmmaker also stars in this drama set during the Vietnam War.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Phillip Roth novel, American Pastoral follows a family whose seemingly idyllic existence is shattered by the social and political turmoil of the 1960s. Ewan McGregor (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Beginners) makes his directorial debut and stars as Seymour "Swede" Levov, a once legendary high school athlete who is now a successful businessman married to Dawn, a former beauty queen. But turmoil brews beneath the polished veneer of Swede's life. When his beloved teenage daughter, Merry, disappears after being accused of committing a violent act, »

American Pastoral Teaser Trailer Hopes Imagery Sells Story

26 June 2016 10:11 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Ewan McGregor chose to tackle a fantastically difficult story for his first foray into directing, and that’s only partially because American Pastoral is so highly regarded.

It isn’t just that the book has received so much critical and popular acclaim, but the fact that an adaptation could so easily go wrong with a story that attempts to tackle the human condition in precisely this way.

Philip Roth’s novel is an almost bizarrely pointed look at how people “work,” and what it means to try to know and understand other people. While the plot, more or less, focuses on a specific incident, it is as much about what happens to anyone if you start really examining the facade everyone puts forward as being “them.”

That’s a tricky movie no matter what the “plot” involves, and it’s the sort of thing that requires a director that really »

Ewan McGregor Makes Directorial Debut In Trailer for Philip Roth Adaptation ‘American Pastoral’

23 June 2016 12:46 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It seems impossible, or maybe just stupid: adapt what is perhaps the most acclaimed novel by perhaps our greatest living novelist as your directorial debut, which you’ll also star in as a character with whom, based on the many and very critical descriptions from said most-acclaimed-novel-by-greatest-living-novelist, you don’t even have the greatest resemblance. Here we are, then, with Ewan McGregor‘s American Pastoral, an adaptation of Philip Roth‘s Pulitzer-winning, meta-fictional masterpiece of grieving, complex generational rifts, and glove-making — not exactly a Sundance-premiering dramedy.

I very much hope not to look like a fool in four months’ time when I say, now, that the first preview points towards something with character — perhaps rather good, even. Early days, yes (hence the disclaimer), yet this is a fine sampling of period-evoking design, shots and palette that evoke some sense of visual purpose — hello, The American and Control Dp Martin Ruhe — and, »

‘Eight Days a Week’ Trailer: Ron Howard’s Beatles Doc Follows The Fab Four’s Tour of the World

20 June 2016 8:42 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Ron Howard may be currently adapting Dan Brown’s novel “Inferno,” with Tom Hanks reprising his role as famous investigative symbologist Robert Langdon, set to be released this October, but he has another film also scheduled to be released in the fall that might turn some heads. Howard’s authorized Beatles documentary “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week” follows the Fab Four’s touring career from 1962-1966, from the Cavern Club through their concert in San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. The film will delve deep into the Beatlemania phenomenon, the relationship between audience and performer, and the socio-political context of the 1960’s that engendered such an important cultural development. It will feature rare and exclusive footage, and was produced with full cooperation from living band members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr as well as widows Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison. Watch a teaser for the film below.

As Stacey Snider Ascends at Fox, Hollywood Is in Turnaround

17 June 2016 9:44 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

At the 2014 New York Film Festival premiere of “Gone Girl,” Twentieth Century Fox Film Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos seemed visibly relieved to have Stacey Snider finally join the studio, after months of speculation that this capable executive would join him from DreamWorks. Now, almost two years later —and after a 25-year career at Fox —the studio has confirmed that Gianopulos’ contract will not be renewed after it expires on June 30, 2017, when he will graduate “upstairs” into an executive role at parent company 21st Century Fox.

This follows a transition for Snider that has not been smooth. While the veteran exec has the right mix of skills to run a studio (and did so at Universal with Ron Meyer), knows how to manage a team of executives, and how to develop, produce, and release movies that are smart and four-quadrant friendly, entering the Fox landscape proved to be a challenge. »

Film Review: Genius

7 June 2016 9:01 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

All the elements inherent in many successful movies are present in the upcoming Colin Firth and Jude Law biographical film, Genius.  Gifted actors (the aforementioned are joined by Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney, among others), a seasoned screenwriter (John Logan, who wrote Gladiator and The Aviator, among others), and the trappings—from costumes to sets—of period movies.  But, when it comes to the end product, the total for Genius is not greater than the sum of its parts.  The film is loud on the surface but mostly flat underneath.

Jude Law plays the misunderstood early 20th Century American novelist Thomas Wolfe.  In the opening scenes, he walks into the office of famed New York editor Max Perkins, already a successful publisher of the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway.  Perkins, played by a solid Colin Firth (one of the few outstanding lead performances in the film), becomes »

Splash remake is on the way, says producer Brian Grazer

7 June 2016 10:03 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In an interview with CNBC, producer Brian Grazer (Inferno, A Beautiful Mind) has said that one his earliest films Splash is getting the remake treatment.

Released in 1984, Splash was Grazer and producing partner Ron Howard’s first significant hit, with Howard also directing. Tom Hanks (A Hologram for the King) and Darryl Hannah (Kill Bill) starred in the film.

In the interview, attention turned to Grazer’s original treatment of the film, which was entitled Wet and was told from the mermaid’s point of view rather than the human man’s, played by Hanks.

“I’m actually gonna do Splash today,” said Grazer. “I’m actually going to do it from the point of view of… I can’t say anything about it. There’s a movie star involved, I haven’t announced it. We’re going to do a version of [Wet], but I can’t tell you the twist. »

Classic Film 'Splash' Getting a Remake!

6 June 2016 2:36 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Producer Brian Grazer (24, Splash, A Beautiful Mind) dropped an interesting bit of news to CNBC during a recent interview. When getting posed the hypothetical question of who he would cast in Tom Hanks role in a modern day Splash, Grazer said the following:

"I'm actually doing Splash today and I can't say. I'm actually going to do it from the point-of-view of…I can't say anything about it. There's a movie star that's going to be involved, [but] I haven't announced it."

The response from the interviewer is actually quite hilarious, so I highly recommend watching the actual clip if you weren't planning on it already.

The interviewer probed a bit further, stating in his book A Curious Mind that the first take they had on the film was from the perspective of the mermaid, and Grazer went on to confirm that they'd be producing that version of the film.

They're Remaking Splash, Only With This Major Change

6 June 2016 12:16 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Hollywood has already proved that it has no qualms about rebooting films that are 10, 20 or even 30 years old. In 2016 alone, we’re going to see reboots of Pete’s Dragon, Ben-Hur, The Magnificent Seven and Ghostbusters, the latter of which has especially led fans to react rather uproariously. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that producer Brian Grazer is developing a remake of his 1984 classic Splash. However, Brian Grazer has insisted that there will be one major change to this version, as it will come from the mermaid’s point of view. Brian Grazer made this revelation while talking with CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla about his hugely impressive CV as a producer, which saw him pick up the 2002 Best Picture Oscar for A Beautiful Mind. Brian Grazer was actually also nominated for the Best Original Screenplay of 1984 after he co-wrote Splash.  Still, Grazer& »

Brian Grazer Rides Peak TV Wave, Builds New Empire at Imagine Television

6 June 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Nobody is loving the Peak TV moment more than Brian Grazer.

For a producer of boundless energy and curiosity, the spike in demand for distinctive, high-end series is a dream come true. Grazer’s Imagine Television has been invigorated by the breadth of material it is fielding for Fox (“24: Legacy,” “Shots Fired” and “Empire”) and National Geographic Channel (“Mars” and “Genius”).

And there is more to come. The recent $100 million investment by Raine Group in Imagine Entertainment, which Grazer heads with Ron Howard, has given the company greater flexibility to pursue TV and film projects on a bigger scale. Imagine TV has been based at 20th Century Fox TV since 2000, but it also produces projects outside of 20th TV’s aegis.

Grazer, an Oscar winner for 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind,” likens the creative environment in TV today to a bygone era of the film biz.

Stephen King Discusses The In-Production Adaptation Of The Dark Tower

18 May 2016 11:59 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The thing about Stephen King is that he has a very devoted readership. Not unlike fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books, Stephen King’s audiences know his stories inside-out and, as a result, scrutinise every screen adaptation. It is not surprising, then, that Stephen King himself has been discussing the upcoming film version of The Dark Tower – seemingly to try to manage expectations.

Talking to Anthony Breznican on Sirius Xm’s Behind The Scenes With Anthony Breznican, Stephen King emphasised the fact that the chronology of the story may be a little different from the book.

“I expect that the movie will start where the books start. Y’know, ‘The man in black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed.’ I think that nails it right in place for people… I’ve been pretty insistent on that, and I think everyone’s onboard with it.

Concept Art for "Superman: Flyby"

Welcome back to a special ongoing look at Warner Bros. and how it's handled its DC Comics properties. It's going to be a weekly, ongoing miniseries here at Lrm. This entry will look at what into relaunching the Batman and Superman franchises, and more. We'll explore all of the interesting parallels and forks in the road that brought us to where the Dceu is today.

Last week, we left off in 1997. Batman And Robin came out and was a huge black eye for Warner Bros., effectively turning what was a once promising franchise into a punchline. It was the fourth installment of that series, and it killed Batman almost as definitively as the fourth Superman film had grounded the Man of Steel exactly 10 years earlier.

But before we can look at how Warner Bros. planned to rebound its DC properties post-1997, we have to »
