Is Scarlett Johansson Really The Most Successful Actress Of All Time?

This week, Neil Calloway argues that the success of Scarlett Johansson’s films isn’t down to the actress herself…

This week it was revealed that Scarlett Johansson was the highest grossing actress in the world. That’s not highest paid (that honour goes to Jennifer Lawrence), but the woman who has appeared in the films that have accumulated the highest box office gross.

Cumulatively, Johansson’s films have earned $3.3 billion at the box office; an impressive feat at first glance, but as the cliché goes, there are lies, damn lies and statistics.

For male actors, Harrison Ford (total $4.8 billion) recently overtook Samuel L. Jackson ($4.6 billion) as the highest grossing actor. Now, you could make an argument that people go to see the films that have put Ford on top because he is in them, but you can’t really say the same for Jackson and Johansson. Did you go »

Pixar has no plans for Ratatouille, Wall-e or Inside Out sequels

With Finding Dory out in U.S. cinemas and Cars 3, Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles II all on the horizon over the next few years, Pixar president Jim Morris has been discussing the studio’s approach to sequels, as well as revealing that there are no plans at present for follow-ups to Ratatouille, Wall-e and Inside Out.

“Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on,” Morris tells EW. “A sequel in some regards is even harder [than the original] because you’ve got this defined world which, on the one hand, is a leg up, and on the other hand has expectations that you can’t disappoint on.”

Movie Review – The Purge: Election Year (2016)

The Purge: Election Year, 2016.

Written and Directed by James DeMonaco.

Starring Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Mykelti Williamson, Joseph Julian Soria, Betty Gabriel, Terry Serpico, Edwin Hodge, and Kyle Secor.

Synopsis:

Two years after choosing not to kill the man who killed his son, former police sergeant Barnes has become head of security for Senator Charlene Roan, the front runner in the next Presidential election due to her vow to eliminate the Purge.

Some movies are timely, and then there are others that cross the line into blunt, over exaggerated, in-your-face propaganda to fit a timely agenda. The Purge: Election Year, aside from releasing in a year when America will actually elect a new president in real life, features a female senator running for president (she even bears a striking resemblance to Hillary Clinton in some ways, most notably the blonde hair) campaigning with the goal in mind of becoming victorious »

J.K. Simmons wants to explore Commissioner Gordon’s “badass side” in Justice League

As production continues on next year’s huge DC blockbuster Justice League, J.K. Simmons has been chatting to Entertainment Weekly about his role as Commissioner Gordon, stating that he hopes to explore the character’s “badass side” in the superhero ensemble.

“People of my generation remember Commissioner Gordon as this jolly, ineffectual Santa Claus type, and I think over the years in the comics there’s definitely much more of a badass side to him,” states Simmons. “One of the things that’s interesting to me is investigating hopefully a little bit more of that badass [side]…You’re living in a universe where it’s pretty tough to be a badass compared to somebody like Batman, but in the universe of non-superheroes I like the idea of Commissioner Gordon as a guy that can take care of himself, a guy that’s a real partner to Batman, not just a »

It’s year two of The Week in Star Wars and we’ve got some big news for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a review for Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, news from Han Solo’s solo movie and more…

Kicking things off this week with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and it was revealed by Kathleen Kennedy that some big changes are coming to the franchise – including the removal of the iconic opening crawl. Blasphemy, surely? “The crawl and some of those elements live so specifically within the ‘saga’ films that we are having a lot of discussion about what  will define the [stand-alone] Star Wars Stories separate and apart from the saga films,” Kennedy told EW. “So we’re right in the middle of talking about that.” Not having the crawl would help separate the spin-offs from the main timeline, but – personally – it would feel like it’s missing something. »

He made his feature directorial debut with 1974’s Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, which he also scripted, before directing and producing the Vietnam war epic The Deer Hunter.
