Hilary Swank Joins The Gang In Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Logan Lucky’

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Things have been pretty quiet lately for two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank. The actress hit a particularly bad streak of movies a few years back — “Amelia,” “Conviction,” “The Resident,” “New Year’s Eve,” “Mary and Martha” — which either didn’t connect with critics or audiences or both. And when she did find great material, like […]

Warcraft” feasted on a record $90 million in its first two days in China, including the highest Thursday box office of all time in the country, with an estimated $46 million.

The fantasy thriller topped the previous two-day record of $88 million set last year by “Furious 7.”

The Thursday gross also beat the $37 million record set earlier this year by the local film “The Mermaid.” “Warcraft” accounted for 81% of the Chinese box office on Thursday.

The video game adaptation grossed a massive $46 million on its opening day in the Middle Kingdom.

Legendary backed the $160 million film, which needs a lift from foreign audiences. It opens Friday in North America, where it’s projected to pull in $25 million against the openings of “The Conjuring 2” and “Now You See Me 2.”

Universal is distributing the film in most of the world, aside from China, where China Film Group and Huaxia are handling the rollout. »

Disney and Pixar brought a night of family fun to the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood for the world premiere of “Finding Dory” on Wednesday. Stars Ellen DeGeneres, Albert BrooksEugene Levy, Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell and Kaitlin Olson walked the blue carpet before attendees packed into the auditorium to screen the highly anticipated sequel to 2003’s “Finding Dory, which director Andrew Stanton described as being “eight years in denial.”

“I spent four years with fish, you try that,” Stanton quipped on the carpet. After watching “Dory” in 3D in 2011, the filmmaker revealed that he was able to finally see the film objectively. “I walked out so worried with Dory, that she hadn’t really gotten over her abandonment issues from being forgotten and lost,” Stanton said. “I didn’t want that for her, I wanted her to have a better life.”

Emmy Awards: In Praise of Supporting Actors Who Stand Out From the Crowd

53 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Showtime recently announced its remake of “Twin Peaks” will include a cast of 217 actors. I pity whoever has to assemble that call sheet.

It’s hard enough these days for shows to stand out from the pack. Best of luck to the actors. The larger the cast, the harder it is for an actor to get any attention. And this year’s supporting actor and actress races are shaping up to be even more competitive than many of the lead races.

With A-list talent flocking to TV, the rise of the star-studded ensemble has certainly benefited TV fans, who get to see an incredible caliber of talent in choice roles. But what’s even more satisfying — and surprising — are the breakout performances from those names you might never have heard of before.

TV Movie and Limited Series Actor Nominees Could Line Up With Oscars

53 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When it came to the lead acting races in last year’s limited series or movie category, the women mounted an impressive lineup. Three Academy Award winners (Frances McDormand, Jessica Lange, and Emma Thompson) and three Oscar nominees (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, and Felicity Huffman) competed for the top prize, which went to McDormand for “Olive Kitteridge.”

This year, it looks to be the men’s turn, with a surprising number of Oscar nominees and winners eligible in the category, along with some big-name star power flexing its muscles. Academy Award winners in the running for lead actor include Anthony Hopkins (“The Dresser”), Cuba Gooding Jr. (“The People V. O.J. Simpson”), Richard Dreyfuss (“Madoff”), and Timothy Hutton (“American Crime”).

They will face considerable competition from Oscar nominees like Benedict Cumberbatch, who has already won an Emmy for his role in “Sherlock,” and Ian McKellen, who goes head-to-head with Hopkins in “The Dresser. »

Fun Fact: 'Warcraft' quietly changed the origin story of one its crucial heroes

54 minutes ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

One of the pitfalls of making a film adaptation is there will be people who already know what is going to happen. Whether the source material was a novel, a comic book, or a video game, fans are going to have expectations on how things will shake out. This can be a good thing. It can also be a hurdle to overcome. Such was the case in Warcraft, where the writers subtly changed a character’s origin to the point I didn’t even notice it until an insider casually mentioned it in conversation. Warning: Spoilers For The Warcraft Movie Beyond This Point. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of the Warcraft franchise. I’ve been all over the film’s progress like Elmer’s glue on a 1st grader’s hands. From visiting the set to seeing the finalized VFX at an Ilm presentation, no »
