Warcraft earns the second biggest opening in China ever with $46 million; passes $100 million worldwide

13 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Following the weekend’s box office, we reported that Duncan JonesWarcraft (or Warcraft: The Beginning) had worked its way up to $70 million worldwide. Although some are theorising a pretty poor run domestically, it has performed exceptionally well in China.

After a whopping $7.6 million from midnight screenings, Warcraft brought home $46 million from its China opening according to first estimates. This is the second biggest opening for an American movie behind last year’s Furious 7, and it has vastly outperformed Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War. It could end up with $170-$200 million in China alone.

If the movie can keep up this pace oversees, the $160 million video game movie might see some sequels after all.

Warcraft opens this weekend in North America, and experts say it could earn upwards of $25 million with a projected total of $75 million. »

‘Suicide Squad’ Is No ‘Deadpool': Warner Bros Film Lands PG-13 Rating

14 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The Jared Leto-led “Suicide Squad” will not follow in the R-rated footsteps of Ryan Reynolds‘ “Deadpool”: The upcoming Warner Bros. film has officially landed a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. The Motion Picture Association of America assigned it the rating for “sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language.” Generally speaking, box office opportunities are far greater for films more inclusive of the general public, though “Deadpool’s” “R” didn’t seem to hurt it too much. Still, studios highly prefer the “PG-13” — especially for comic book films, which tend to skew younger. Also »

Per Variety, the character will not be a Clinton caricature, but instead an amalgamation of all of the different candidates currently in the running. (Let’s just hope she doesn’t have Donald Trump’s hair!)

Four new releases debuted among the top 10 sellers on the national home video sales charts the week ended June 5.

One of them, Lionsgate’s “Gods of Egypt,” bumped Twentieth Century Fox’s “Deadpool” out of the top spot on both Npd VideoScan’s combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales chart and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. The superhero movie landed at No. 2 on both charts, after three weeks at No. 1.

Gods of Egypt,” an action movie about feuding Egyptian deities, grossed just $31.1 million in U.S. theaters, against a budget estimated at $140 million. The film was criticized for its white cast but it went on to gross more than $142 million worldwide.

[Spoiler alert: The following interview discusses plot details of “The Americans” Season 4, episode 13, finale, titled “Persona Non Grata.”]

The Americans” fourth season wrapped with a hint of romance — though just what Paige’s flirtation with Matthew Beaman, the FBI agent’s son living across the street, means for her Kgb spy parents is up in the air for now. Philip certainly isn’t happy, but Elizabeth may see it as another sign Paige is picking up on the spy game. Meanwhile, the FBI caught up with William Crandall, who immediately infected himself with the deadly virus he was carrying and wasted away in FBI custody (Dylan Baker, we hardly knew ye!). And there are big changes afoot at the Rezidentura, with Arkady Ivanovich Zotov being forced to step down.

Variety spoke with showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg about the intriguing developments.

What is Philip’s biggest fear about Paige and Matthew?

Fields: The number of potential ways that could go bad are hard to enumerate. That she »

[This article contains spoilers for the Wednesday, June 8 season finale of The Americans.] The Unetaneh Tokef prayer, one of the key pieces of the Jewish High Holy Day liturgy, could also be a foundational text for showrunners crafting premieres and finales for their TV shows. For the less Jewishly inclined among you, the Unetaneh Tokef prayer/poem/piyyut speaks to the divine judgment of the season, which launches the new year in the Hebrew calendar. The Americans just wrapped up its fourth season, which we now know will be followed by two more (13 episodes, followed by 10) to wrap up the story of the Jennings family. My review of the season finale is here, and I spoke with showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg about where things stand, how they decided they needed two seasons to wrap things up instead of one, and more, just as soon as I offer you a Coke... The last time we spoke, you said you were breaking the final stories of the show, and you didn't know if you'd need one or two to do it. How and when did you realize you'd need two? Joe Weisberg: Joel and I took our usual series of walks, and the main thing we realized was we had this very very full story that we wanted to tell in season 5, which meant that the ending we had, »

Could Stanford Rape Judge Really Have His Gavel Taken Away?

The California judge who sentenced a former Stanford University swimmer to six months in jail for raping an unconscious woman is likely to survive the recent efforts to remove him from the bench, experts tell TheWrap. “It’s very, very unlikely,” criminal defense attorney Mark McBride said of the possibility Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky might be ousted. “People have the right to recall judges all they want but unless you get the legal community behind it, it won’t happen.” McBride, who’s tried many sexual assault cases, said Persky was allowed to use his discretion in handing down a sentence on 20-year-old. »

Film Review: ‘London Town’

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In an era where Cbgb can be reborn as a themed restaurant at the Newark airport, and Iggy Pop’s musical accounts of heroin dependency can soundtrack cruise ship commercials, it’s not such a far leap to imagine the music of the Clash and the squalor of punk squats in pre-Thatcherite London serving as the backdrop for a sweetly lighthearted teenage coming-of-age tale. But that doesn’t make it any less strange.

Such is the gauntlet thrown down by Derrick Borte’s “London Town,” which follows a bright-eyed 15-year-old named Shay (Daniel Huttlestone) as he struggles to deal with some tough times in the summer of 1978, finding solace in the music, and the person, of Clash frontman Joe Strummer (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). To be sure, the film has plenty of qualities to recommend it: Meyers’ portrayal of the punk godhead is studied and exacting, from his diction to his »
