Amber Tamblyn Climbs to Director’s Chair for ‘Paint’ Job

10 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A third-generation Angeleno, Amber Tamblyn says she has L.A. “deep in her bones.” So it may have been inevitable that when the actress decided to make the jump to directing, she chose an L.A. story.

Paint it Black,” which Tamblyn adapted from Janet Fitch’s novel about the L.A. punk scene in the 1980s, will have its world premiere at Laff on June 3.

Tamblyn – a published poet – was given the book by friend Amy Poehler a decade ago. She instantly had a visceral reaction: “It [looked] like a movie to me,” says Tamblyn. “I think most people who want to adapt a novel into a film have a similar strong and quick response to the narrative.”

Tamblyn’s been acting for 20 years, starting with a six-year stint on “General Hospital,” but directing was never on her mind. Originally, she had another director signed on who eventually convinced her that »

Wme: We’re Not Doing Trump’s Convention Film

23 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A spokesman for Wme Entertainment said that the agency had no plans to work on a film for the Republican National Convention, after Donald Trump suggested in an interview that agency chieftan Ari Emanuel had offered to take charge of the project.

Trump is a former agency client and talks to Emanuel, the spokesman said. Wme/Img also purchased the Miss Universe Pageant from the Trump Organization last year.

In an interview with Michael Wolff in the Hollywood Reporter, Trump said that Emanuel was a “very good friend of mine” and that he had offered to take on the convention project.

But Emanuel is a longtime Democrat, and has given to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. His brother, Rahm, is the former mayor of Chicago.

It’s fairly typical for presidential nominees to enlist Hollywood figures for their biographical convention films. Davis Guggenheim directed Barack Obama’s movie in 2008, and »

Jake Gyllenhaal Just Joined Another Video Game Adaptation, Get The Details

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It's been six years since Jake Gyllenhaal lit up screens worldwide in his portrayal of the titular character in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. But seeing as that film's reception was, at best, lukewarm, one can't blame him if he never set foot on the set of a video game adaptation again. Yet here we are, almost a decade later, and Gyllenhaal is ready to take the lead in the film version of Tom Clancy's The Division. The news broke in a hot item this evening, courtesy of Variety, which saw Gyllenhaal not only named as the star of the film adaptation of one of this year's best selling video games, but also as a producer. This is Ubisoft's third would-be film franchise based on one of their products, as Michael Fassbender's Assassin's Creed is set to be released this December, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell »

How The Director Who Slammed Keira Knightley Is Trying To Make Things Right

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

A couple of days ago, John Carney, the director of Sing Street and Begin Again, happened to make some choice remarks about how he basically didn't want to work with Keira Knightly ever again. We were as surprised as you were, frankly, and the only thing that's even more surprising is the whip fast turnaround between the disparaging remarks and Carney's apology. You can read said apology, courtesy of a tweet from the director, below. From a director who feels like a complete idiot. pic.twitter.com/vfO8m4U2Hl. John Carney (@jayceefactory) June 1, 2016 This apology comes from only a couple of hours ago, on John Carney's Twitter feed, but the response itself looks like it's the result of quite a bit of thought. In his statement, Carney blamed his words on the fact that in picking apart his own work, he pointed the finger in a direction »

‘Under the Gun’ Director: ‘I Stand By’ Controversial Edit

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Director Stephanie Soechtig is sticking up for her documentary “Under the Gun” after executive producer Katie Couric apologized for a controversial scene in the film.

Couric, who also narrates and appears in the movie, expressed regret Monday for a moment in the film in which she asks members of a gun-rights group called the Virginia Citizens Defense League a question about background checks for felons and suspected terrorists. The group members are shown sitting silently for eight seconds before finally answering. Couric and the movie, which premiered May 14 on Epix, became targets for gun-rights advocates last week after unedited audio revealed that the silence had been added into the documentary — the Vcdl members had responded immediately to Couric’s question. In her statement Monday, Couric said, “I regret that those eight seconds were misleading,” and claimed that she raised concerns about the edit to Soechtig during the filmmaking process.

Over the last several months, Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One adaptation has been building itself an impressive cast. The movie is only a couple weeks from finally commencing principal photography, but there’s still at least one more actor joining the ensemble. It’s just been announced that Deadpool’s T.J. Miller has been recruited as the newest player in Oasis, the story’s expansive virtual reality world. As the latest addition to Ready Player One, Miller will play an annoying troll in the Oasis forums named i-R0k, according to The Hollywood Reporter. We won’t give any spoilers, but as you would expect from that description, i-R0k makes life hell for the main protagonist, Wade Watts. However, i-R0k wasn’t a major character in the book, so one wonders if his role in the movie will be »
