TIME names Kodak and Polaroid cameras two of the 'most influential gadgets' in history

When wheels, axes, bows, pens and paper where invented they where the latest gadget one could have.

Gadget: "a small mechanical device or tool, especially an ingenious or novel one.
synonyms: appliance, apparatus, instrument, implement, tool, utensil, contrivance, contraption, machine, mechanism, device, labour-saving device, convenience"

The things you mentioned were never gadgets...

The main innovation of that camera was that it was digital. But it had no impact on society.

OK . The pad was there. Missed the PC. IBM 5150 does not ring a bell for me. Still, I think it is partly a random list. USB memory stick? The smart card? Digital camera? LCD screen. The 3D graphics card? Microwave oven? Pace maker? ... And still I think it is too concentrated on who is first. Better to concentrate on the actual inventions.

DPR, here, is concerned with 2 items that are related to its audience.

OK - so the list did not contain the digital camera, USB memory stick (alternative flash memory) and the LCD screen. Actually, the CRT is not there either. The 360 degree cameras are not there, and not the selfie stick.

But, actually my main gripe with the list is that it is a "who was first" list. Most things would have been invented later by someone else.

Agreed. The digital camera should've been No. 2, but Apple paid a lot in advertising money on Time, so they got all their products listed, including No. 1

But on a serious note, the "Internet" should have been No. 1 because the list's title is "most influential".

And how dare they not include DPR as the most influential in digital photography!!!

Of course, Time themselves messed up many of the images, including the Polaroid, the VCR, the DVD player, the Walkman, etc.

@TriezeA72 You must be a very unhappy or unconfident person, if the idea that every 80th person in your neighborhood (if you're German) could now be of Syrian origin has totally taken over your mind. Sorry for you, but there are many other aspects in life.

@joe...I couldn't give a rats toss if every 20th 40th or 80th person living in my neighbourhood was either of Syrian, French or Pekingese origins...I don't have a problem with citizens of ethnic origins, and I don't understand how you came to this conclusion that I do, there is no mention of such content in my comments above!... Why do you call "opening the gates" for war refugees "heinous" then, if you don't have a problem with that?

Merkel cannot shut Germany’s borders to refugees like Sweden, Denmark or Austria have done, because then everyone else would follow suit, that would mean the collapse of the Schengen free-movement zone, which Europe cannot afford.
She can go on diplomatic missions to Turkey to beg Erdogan to stop the flow of asylum-seekers to Europe, the trouble with this strategy is that the Turks will keep asking for more money in return for their help, in addition to the €3 billion the EU has already promised, and there are doubts over how much Mr Erdogan is really willing or able to do

If Merkel can’t get Turkey to solve the problem for her, the only alternative is to bottle it up in Greece, the entry point for most asylum-seekers. The EU can pour money in to helping the Greeks cope with the numbers, build more refugee camps, and secure the border, but that could cause chaos in a country that is only just recovering from a long series of economic crises, and if Greece finds itself facing the refugee problem alone, there could be a new wave of protests, snap elections and unrest....The possibility of Grexit could rear its head again, just as Merkel and the EU thought they had put it to bed!...She screwed up big time by opening up the gates, she's put the whole of Europe in jeopardy, a self gratifying act to gain popularity....shes got her pic on the front cover of TIME, and you'll bearing the brunt of her huge stuff up!

It's hard to argue that photography -embodied in some particular form- should be on the list. We can discuss if it should be those cameras or some other. But the absurdity of Time's list borders outright stupidity.

At one time Kodak owned German and Japanese camera manufacturers along with US ones such as the maker of Graflex... Folmer and Schwing. Kodak owned the Israeli company Imacom for a while too. Kodak made CCDs and high end digital backs. Kodak had a large chemical company. Kodak was very large and diverse in photography.
