3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After her Oscar-winning turn in “Room,” Brie Larson may be ready to step into the shoes of one of Marvel’s most popular female superheroes.

Sources tell Variety Marvel is in early talks with Larson to play Captain Marvel in the studio’s standalone project. It is unknown where things stand in negotiations, but sources have told Variety that Larson is the first choice, and that she’s leaning toward playing the part.

Marvel had no comment on the story.

No director is currently on board. Marvel, however, had always planned to have an actress lined up early, with the idea of possibly introducing her in one of its upcoming films before its “Captain Marvel” movie bows.

Inside Out” scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman are currently writing the script, which follows Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. »

Adding fuel to all the Tom Hiddleston as James Bond fire comes word that acclaimed Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier ("After the Wedding," "In a Better World") has made the shortlist as one of the leading contenders to direct the next entry in the 007 franchise.

RadioTimes broke the news, saying Bier is among a 'handful' of names making up producer Barbara Broccoli’s shortlist to inherit the directing gig from Sam Mendes who directed the last two and made it clear this week he's done with the franchise for now - much like its star Daniel Craig.

If Bier gets the job it would make her the first woman ever to helm a James Bond movie. Bier has just come off helming BBC1's acclaimed espionage drama series "The Night Manager" which starred Hiddleston in a mini-series which has frequently been dubbed as the actor's "audition for Bond" in numerous reviews. »

A spokesman for Wme Entertainment said that the agency had no plans to work on a film for the Republican National Convention, after Donald Trump suggested in an interview that agency chieftan Ari Emanuel had offered to take charge of the project.

Trump is a former agency client and talks to Emanuel, the spokesman said. Wme/Img also purchased the Miss Universe Pageant from the Trump Organization last year.

In an interview with Michael Wolff in the Hollywood Reporter, Trump said that Emanuel was a “very good friend of mine” and that he had offered to take on the convention project.

But Emanuel is a longtime Democrat, and has given to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. His brother, Rahm, is the former mayor of Chicago.

It’s fairly typical for presidential nominees to enlist Hollywood figures for their biographical convention films. Davis Guggenheim directed Barack Obama’s movie in 2008, and »

‘Under the Gun’ Director: ‘I Stand By’ Controversial Edit

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Director Stephanie Soechtig is sticking up for her documentary “Under the Gun” after executive producer Katie Couric apologized for a controversial scene in the film.

Couric, who also narrates and appears in the movie, expressed regret Monday for a moment in the film in which she asks members of a gun-rights group called the Virginia Citizens Defense League a question about background checks for felons and suspected terrorists. The group members are shown sitting silently for eight seconds before finally answering. Couric and the movie, which premiered May 14 on Epix, became targets for gun-rights advocates last week after unedited audio revealed that the silence had been added into the documentary — the Vcdl members had responded immediately to Couric’s question. In her statement Monday, Couric said, “I regret that those eight seconds were misleading,” and claimed that she raised concerns about the edit to Soechtig during the filmmaking process.

We have a new frontrunner for Captain Marvel, and we think you’ll like her

A new development in the speculation of who will star in the first McU led solo by a female superhero: Brie Larson is reportedly the frontrunner to play Captain Marvel. Variety posted today that she is in early talks for the role and is the studio’s first choice, though Marvel isn’t commenting on this yet. Larson has become quite the “It Girl” lately, winning the Best Actress Oscar this year for Room and set to share the screen with Tom Hiddleston in new King Kong movie Kong: Skull Island. Yup, this would mean two The Spectacular Now actors have gone on to play superheroes, though we hope things turn out much better for Larson than they did for Miles Teller. The 'Twin Peaks' Season 3 premiere date just got narrowed down a little bit more

2 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

David Lynch and Mark Frost's strict code of silence has made news on the Twin Peaks revival tough to come by, but here's something, at least: the show will premiere in the "second quarter" of 2017 (i.e. sometime in April, May, or June). That's according to Showtime president David Nevins, who also noted during a conference call with reporters that Lynch is currently editing the series' third season, which wrapped principal photography back in April.  Twin Peaks originally aired on ABC between 1990 and 1991 before being picked up by Showtime for an extremely-belated Season 3. Original cast members set to return for the revival include Kyle McLachlan, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee, Madchen Amick, Ray Wise, Grace Zabriskie and Dana Ashbrook. [Vulture] »
