Canon EOS 80D Field Test: Barney builds a boat

As a kayaker, woodworker, and photographer this video was riveting! Very strong work Barney--stunner boat! Congratulations.

Looks like the camera got out of your way and let the story come to the fore.

The only new content in this video is demonstrating the vid capability of the camera. But even if the content for the stills component can be found elsewhere (eg in the full reviews, sample photos etc...), I find these videos really engaging to watch. I hope DPR keeps making them.

Great video. Bought a 80D two days ago. Thought I knew most of the useful functions and features of the camera but as it turns out I learned a lot more, such as the intervalometer.

Smart ways to present how various functions are used in real life too.

Fantastic piece! Stuff like this inspires me to pick up a camera (any camera!) and shoot.

The pace and narrative of this piece were perfect. None of the 80D's short comings impaired the storytelling. Not once did I feel "gee, this story would be better with 4K, C-Log, and more DR."

On a different note, a pro-audio setup goes a long way towards high production values. The use of wireless lavs in this piece does more for the overall feel than any incremental improvement in dynamic range or resolution.

so the question left unanswered.. does it still float?

I am not a Canon shooter but this a very excellent video. Enjoyed it!

Nicely done article and very informative. More interesting for me as to the construction of the kayak then the attributes of the camera.
I do think the 80d is an excellent camera and the background narrative was well presented to show what one can do with Canon's latest.
As an amateur kayaker and photographer I have been a woodworker for many years, have worked at boat building but never tried building a kayak. This may have given me the incentive to actually build one.

I Love it!
I lived in the Seattle area for 25 years, started Harbortronics (time-lapse camera systems) in a basement in Gig Harbor. I used to have a kayak, have been to Wooden Boat Center, and recognize every place you filmed. I'm in Colorado now, but once in a while I miss the PNW. Your little film definitely tugged at some heart strings :)

No interest in the camera, but great film Barney! Fascinating subject.

Gosh, my first impression was that the transmitter antenna was glued to the lens barrel. Huh?

For the workshop, is there a website that explains a little bit more? Timeline, pricing, etc..

Like many others, I was so enchanted by the magic of the boat building that I lost track of the camera and the technical stuff and missed the production details... Which models of mikes were used? The sound was pretty decent, was it all just the on-camera mike? A shotgun on the camera? Were there lavs or a boom? And any lighting or reflectors? Sticks? Or all handheld?
What profiles were used in camera? And was it all auto white balance?

Well done and refreshing,I like the the little clips towards the end that showed the camera mounted on a cart,would love to have seen more of those camera mounting and positioning, stay well and keep up the good work.

Next, Barney should have the Minnesota Canoe Association teach him how to make a wood-strip solo canoe. Some of those are really works of art.

Wow some people here must lead sad and miserable lives. I'm a Sony shooter, ex Canon and loved this short film. Photography is one part gear, another part skill, another technique and another about getting out and living and capturing beauty. DPR is a gear site for sure, but to see these adventures into othe areas is most welcome. What's more Barney, you're an excellent host. Thank you and more please. I could care less about which camera is used or who sponsors.
