NGP Offically Named Vita, Gets Priced and Dated
Sony outlines the system's Near and Party features. Oh, and 3G is powered by AT&T.;
Update: The system is coming this holiday season at two price points. The Wi-Fi-only model will retail for $249.99, while the 3G-equipped model will cost $299.99.
Original Story: Sony confirmed the rumors and reports that have been going around recently that the PlayStation Portable's successor will be known as PlayStation Vita.
The 3G-enabled model of Vita will be powered exclusively by AT&T;, a revelation that was met with moans and groans from many of those in attendance. Those with AT&T; service plans will be entitled to free Wi-Fi access at 24,000 hotspots around the country.
Sony is pushing the system's connected features. "Party" allows you to be in a game room together with other PSN users that you can voice chat with either through an external microphone or a built-in mic, regardless of what game you're currently playing. "Near" allows you to connect and play with other Vita users nearby, recommend content, compare Trophies, and do other social things.
As of this writing, no release date or price has been announced.

Why the hell do you bitch and complain without reading the post! It says "The system is coming this holiday season". Thats a pretty good idea of when its coming out. If you need an exact date then just keep waiting and keep the bitching to yourself!

why can't we all just get along?

while i agree with killedCorpse that "this holiday season" is enough of a launch window to go by, and that whoever that's griping about the lack of a specific date is just venting impatience... really, if you're going to call someone an idiot (which is unnecassary), at least USE CORRECT SPELLING! o_O
that's I-D-I-O-T
who doesn't love shooting themselves in the friggin' foot, eh?
unless you want to argue that zombies/killedcorpses do not, by nature, know how to spell, then that probably makes sense... :P

how everyone thinks the 3DS is going to fail, NONE of you study history, the DS was in this same position 2 years ago and still out sold the psp. THEY WERE THE SAME PRICE! I'll probably get one 2 or 3 years from now because it is a nice peice of tech and I dont hate SONY (in fact I own 2 PSPs') its just people must be bored or real immature to say that one or the other is going to fail, get over it and buy the one you want or both ( I own a 3DS and WILL buy a NGP) apples oranges, Iphones and windows phones, its about what you like not everyone else's opinion.

Also isn't a cellphone and uses AT&T for 3G. And if you don't want to pay for 3G, use Wi-Fi. The mere fact that you mentioned this ridiculous complaint means you aren't even interested in this product and just want to bash it, so just be quiet and go somewhere else...

PSP all over again?
Posted: Jun 07, 2011 12:00AM PST by SamuraiTerry
I honestly don't think Vita will do all that well. Sure people that patrol 1up and are reading this very comment will get one. I just don't see the main stream audience putting down their iPhones for a Vita. As a system, all of the functionality of the Vita looks great, but I'm not looking for an Uncharted experience on the go.

As a gamer I'll have own everything... eventually.
Posted: Jun 07, 2011 12:00AM PST by SamuraiTerry
I don't even see the 3DS recreating what the DS had. Pokemon and Mario will sell millions of units but, grandma and kids can do a lot more with ipad/ipod. How can Sony or Nintendo compete against itunes and the app store?
Also with the God of War PSP games and Metal Gear Peace Walker coming in HD what's not to make me wait for Vita games to come to the PS3/PS4 and play them on a console I actually want to play on?
-
-
Who said that it needs to be mainstream?
Posted: Jun 08, 2011 12:00AM PST by XHandxBananaX43
I don't think that dedicated gaming handhelds have to go mainstream. They do just fine as a niche item. The PSP despite what how much people bash it did great. 70 million units is nothing to scoff at and even though it was vastly outsold by the DS you also have to take in to account that it was Sony's first handheld system. Sony's clearly taken the feedback that it has received and is pushing the Vita in the right direction.
Despite what everyone says though I don't think you can even compare what's available on the PSP to anything that is on the iPhone or Android. I play plenty of mobile games on my EVO and it's a blast, but they are in a completely different league than the games available on the PSP, or even some DS games for that matter. When I'm going on a long car trip or if I have a couple of hours to burn in between classes I want to get immersed in a really deep game. Games that simply aren't available on the iPhone or Android. On the other hand though if I just want to play a quick game to burn some time off the clock at work or on the bus ride to work then I want a quick game I can get in and out of.
They can both coexist and both can be profitable businesses for their respective companies.

This is what the PSP should have been 6 years ago.
Posted: Jun 07, 2011 12:00AM PST by henrys_awsomest
We all knew that it was missing the 2nd analog stick, that was a killer.
That the online was sketchy at a time where online gaming was at its biggest climb, held it back.
Its size was small enough only for oversized cargo pants.
And now they decide to fix things? It could hold true to the name and bring new life into the PSP, much like Nintendo shoving things down peoples throats till they like it, but chances are Sonys little black mistake has had its last chance.

$249 isn't bad considering
Posted: Jun 06, 2011 12:00AM PST by Dinglewhoosh
I'm surprised Sony managed to hit the $249 price point. It's certainly not cheap but I recall $300 psp's and $600 ps3's a few years back. Also consider that the 3DS isn't much cheaper and once you get past the 3D gimick the hardware itself is a joke. I'm not interested in a 3G model but I feel the wifi model is worth the price... considering it launches with some decent games. This is the first time in a long time I'm not disgusted by Sony's pricing.

I'm tired of the super expenseive hand helds. I don't want to pay as much for a hand held as I do for a console. Especially since they're offering all this crap. IF I manage to get a group of people together that all own $250 hand helds then I guess their social features could be cool.
But more likely I'd just say to everyone "Lets all play a game on the my PS3 or 360."

Sony folks are hopeless..
Posted: Jun 06, 2011 12:00AM PST by nipsen
"3G is powered by AT&T."
Been sniffing MacWorld again, have we? You can literally see how giddy they become when they talk about a forced subscription plan with an associated retailer. It goes like this: "the only way to make money off handhelds is to create an exclusive portal-delivery system that can only be accessed through one particular service-provider. Because otherwise people will pirate stuff, and our partners will go nuts with paranoia, and pull all their apps and deals! So even though we forgo 3/4ths of the market, this is going to go down really well with our exclusive partners - besides, look at how much of a success the iPhone was!".
Seriously, though.. "Vita"? The promotion folks have a rage-fit over people reacting negatively to Cole's hair in Infamous 2 - but they're seriously going to name the new portable "Vita". I mean, do they even /want/ to sell it? It's just like their laptops and phones - they apparently develop them for the other guys on the lab, and then don't use the boxes for anything useful afterwards.

Posted: Jun 07, 2011 12:00AM PST by FinalFantasy773
That first paragraph made no sense and wasn't even the slightest bit entertaining or informative. And as for you and everyone complaining about the name as if it's REALLY going to affect your choice in buying it, you are all retarded lying pricks. Names don't mean anything. The product matters. It's not like they named it something utterly ridiculous or offensive. Vita means life in Latin. Nothing wrong with that. You haters are clearly anti-Sony and would not have puchased this had it been made of solid gold so go get a life and stop making complaints...

AT&T was a bad choice
Posted: Jun 06, 2011 12:00AM PST by XHandxBananaX43
I will still be buying the WiFi model for sure, but by choosing AT&T they have absolutely assured that I won't be buying the 3G model which is a shame. I was really looking forward to having the 3G connectivity.

AT&T has pretty good service across the US.
Posted: Jun 07, 2011 12:00AM PST by vincentgoodwin
I live in Texas, and AT&T has been generally good wherever I go.
In California, it's a bit spotty, especially in San Franscisco (where all the tech writers and 1up crew live). My theory is all the tech writers are higher users of bandwidth (iPhones) than others, and thus AT&T's network is tapped. I have no idea how Verizon in San Franscisco has handled the iPhone.
I think Americans just have a problem with monolithic organizations in general.

Different segments?
Posted: Jun 06, 2011 12:00AM PST by gamer_reader
Not sure! 3DS launched trying to move towards the hardcore market (Street Fighter IV anyone?) and PS Vita is clearly giving a shot for the casual market (LBP, kart games, pool games, does that look familiar?)...at the same time IPod touch/IPhone is already a hit in the casual market and moving slowing towards more hardcore games...and 3DS can get shot in our own house if the rumors about the Cafe controller proves true...tomorrow will be more critical than ever for the future of Nintendo and 3DS...

Great price point, but a lot of features just seem redundant. I mean so many of these features are done better or more conveniently with smartphones.
Anyways, Nintendo better figure something out because no way that 3D justifies being the same price, not to mention the shitty lineup of games months after launch. Someone do a report on how 3DS is doing in japan!

I wish...
Posted: Jun 06, 2011 12:00AM PST by katiekatgirl
I wish they would make a third version that had all the power Sony said it would. That sounded so cool! I get mad when they do this just to make it cheap. I'd rather have better then cheaper. I think it's because a lot of poor people play games and so comapys are scared that they won't be able to sell expensive, really cool stuff that has all the newest stuff in it. But to me they are being unfair. You hear black kids all the time say how stuff is unfair, but here the good systems can't be made because most black people are poor and play sports games and so buy a lot of systems. I think it's not right that the people who could afford cutting edge stuff can't buy it because companys won't make it and instead we have to settlte for whatever the poorest people can all buy. They should make a system for black people that plays madden and nba really well but leavve out the rest so it'll be cheap then make the good one one too. Then they can get a new system instead of just getting last gen refurbished ones for christmas and people whose parents work and don't do drugs can get the good one.

I never knew we (black people) were ruining gaming for everyone, or maybe its our frst step towards world domination. First we dominate you in almost every sport, then we corrupt all the suburban white kids with our hypnotic rap music, then we convince your parents to vote for a black president and now we dumb down gaming for everyone MWHAHAHAHA!!!!
Excuse me now, I have to go smoke some weed and drink some Alize in my Bentley with 26' rims, surrounded by white women, go buy a watch, chain and ring covered in diamonds then go get some fried chicken and watermelon and wash it down with grape soda, whille avoiding my 3 baby mama's so I can avoid paying child support for my 6 kids.

re: SDC
Posted: Jun 06, 2011 12:00AM PST by mysteriousgamer
Wrong. 3DS will suffer tremendously if it doesn't offer more value when PSV comes out. At $249, your 3DS will be far less powerful, offer less online functionality, and have a control scheme not nearly as good as the PSV. They will both have good games. So, unless Nintendo does something to it's price, it will be destroyed by PSV and other devices. Frankly, for it to have even a chance, it will need to drop it's game prices, the system price, and offer cross-platform compatibility between DSi/XL, DS, 3DS, and Wii Virtual Console titles. Being able to play my already-existing VC library remotely, portably, now we're in the ballpark, and now it's a ball game. Anything less, and Nintendo can kiss it's market share goodbye.

It's not about the hardware, it's about the software. Nintendo has the edge there, no question. Remember when people said EXACTLY what you're saying now about the DS and PSP? Before you cry foul about the 3DS having lots of rehashed and remade games, go take a look at what the Vita was/is slated to launch with.
The 3Ds needs to do something drastic to even stand a chance? They'll get "destroyed" by the Vita if they don't? Yeah, I don't think so. Nintendo owns the portable market, no question about it. Does this mean the Vita won't/can't do well? Of course not. Sony has plenty of room to grow in the protable market. They just won't be dethroning Nintendo anytime soon. I think you're grossly overestimating the emphasis the average gamer will place on hardware specs and extra doo-dads. So what if the Vita is more powerful? People buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games. Unless the Vita can offer some stellar game experiences you can't find on it's bigger console bothers, then it's not going anywhere.
It's Sony that needs to pull a few tricks out of their collective asses to stand a chance in the portable market, not Nintendo. I don't think the 3DS wil be "detroyed" by the Vita, or anything else, for that matter. Nintendo won't be kissing it's share in the portable market goodbye any time soon.
