E3 Press Conference Scorecard: Microsoft vs. Sony vs. Nintendo

We take a look back and reflect upon the media briefings held by all three console manufacturers.

E3 2011

Following the three console manufacturers' E3 press conferences, invariably the question arises of who had the best showing. From year to year it depends largely on which company decides to show new hardware, something that very often provides an edge you can't get with games alone.

This year there was a lot to see; we got a lot of the important details on the already-announced NGP, Nintendo debuted the Wii U, and Microsoft continued to push Kinect. Depending upon your perspective, you may end up with a radically different take -- hardcore gamers might not be enamored with something like Kinect Disneyland Adventures or Sesame Street, while the casual crowd or those looking at things from a business point-of-view could find them very compelling.

With all of that in mind, here's a brief recap and some thoughts on what the big three had to show at their E3 media briefings.

Microsoft

Conference Highlights:

What felt like the bulk of Microsoft's press conference focused on pushing Kinect. That's either a good thing or a bad thing; Kinect isn't just being used for casual games (we did see that with the likes of Kinect Sports 2) but also for hardcore games: Mass Effect 3 was confirmed to use Kinect for voice control. That's an interesting concept, although it's also something we've before, sans Kinect, and it doesn't offer much in the way of the "controller-free" experience Kinect makes possible. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier lets you customize guns using just your voice (neat!), but controller-free shooting looked downright bizarre. Kinect Star Wars, intended to be a big-hitter for Microsoft, looked laggy and that could prove to be a big impediment in its ability to catch on.

When hardcore games were talked about, they didn't come as much of a surprise. Halo 4 is exciting (also: inevitable, and spoiled earlier in the day along with other reveals by Xbox.com). The remastered version of Combat Evolved had been rumored for so long that it wasn't a shock, and it's disappointing that online multiplayer is running on Reach's engine (complete with armor abilities, et al from that game), so it isn't really Halo CE multiplayer online. Gears of War 3 looked terrific and was probably the most impressive 360 exclusive. Modern Warfare 3 looks like more Modern Warfare; up against the Battlefield 3 demo we saw yesterday at the conferences of EA and Sony, that isn't necessarily a positive. It'll still sell incredibly well, though, so Microsoft's continued exclusivity for Call of Duty DLC will still be a big boon. Minecraft as a console exclusive could prove to be a big deal, given its immense popularity on PC. Tomb Raider, quick-time events or not, looked great, but it's multiplatform.

Halo 4

While I personally can't wait to play more Halo (both new and old), it was the non-hardcore stuff that may end up being the biggest part of this year's conference when we look back in a year or two. The Xbox brand has long had a reputation for being a machine for older, male, hardcore gamers. Kinect has tried to dispel that, and titles like Kinect Disneyland Adventures are ideal for pushing Kinect and convincing parents to buy a 360 for younger children. Likewise, Sesame Street from Double Fine has the ability to do the same thing. The new features coming in the latest dashboard revamp are also very interesting from a mainstream perspective: UFC is huge business on pay-per-view and, while the details haven't all been announced, with more and more people moving away from subscribing to cable TV, the ability to purchase UFC PPVs could convince someone deciding between a PS3 and 360 to go with the latter.

More people may end up dumping cable TV thanks to the new ability to watch live television and access YouTube. Combining the latter with voice searches through Bing could be big -- it's probably no coincidence that Netflix's stock price saw a significant drop as the news made the rounds yesterday, as pointed out by Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

Taking this all into account, it may not have been a tremendous showing for the hardcore, dedicated gaming crowd. From a business perspective, with the 360 becoming more of an entertainment device that actually has appeal to a demographic outside of those who play Call of Duty, Halo, and RPGs, there was some great stuff to be seen.

Grade: B

Sony

Conference Highlights:

Sony opened the conference with SCEA president Jack Tretton offering what felt like a legitimately-heartfelt apology for the PlayStation Network breach and downtime. After jokingly saying, "You're welcome" to the writers and editors who enjoy having controversial material to cover, he said thank you to third-party publishers, retail partners (sneaking in some PS3 sales bragging in the process), and consumers. Some actual information about what took place would have been good to share, but having said that, it was a wise move to address this up front rather than stick it in the middle somewhere. Who would have been able to pay attention to game demos when we all wanted to hear how Sony would address the attack in this public venue?

PlayStation Vita, formerly the Next Generation Portable, was the big news coming out of Sony's press conference. It's a peculiar name, and one has to wonder why Sony didn't go with PlayStation Portable 2. Regardless, the price is right -- $249.99 for the base model, $299.99 for 3G -- even if the 3G carrier (AT&T;) led to audible groans from the crowd. The 3DS was criticized for its $250 price tag, but with the belief that NGP/Vita would be much pricier, suddenly finding out it will be "only" $250 makes it sound like a steal. To its credit, with the exception of 3D, it appears to be an exciting piece of technology, and the games shown for it (Uncharted: Golden Abyss being the biggest of the bunch) are pretty, no doubt. It feels as if Vita features are being shoehorned into launch games in the same way that Sixaxis was with early PS3 titles (does anyone really want to reach across the screen to jump across a ledge in Uncharted?). Thankfully, it looks as if much of that will be optional. A release date would have been a nice bonus on top of the pricing, yet that particular detail never came.

Sony (and Nintendo) continue on the next page.

I think that while this was not the best E3 showing ever byt the big 3, none of them greatly outshined the competition. Sony showed off Vita, and that sweet deal with the 3DTV package, some big games to work with Move and others like Uncharted, Resistance etc.

Microsoft announced some big names to work with Kinect, plus had a library of family freindly games for it which may tick off "harcore" gamers but it is a great buisness decision, and they have a variety of new services coming to LIVE, plus games like Halo 4 and Halo Redux Laughing.

Nintendo had the Wii U with some impressive games being shown (yes I know they were videos, but I can believe the graphics will be just as good at launch) and announcements from major third parties. They showed off Zelda for 3DS (with other Zelda related announcements)  and Luigis Mansion (not my favorite, but people like it I guess). They launched the eShop, announced Mario 3DS and New Super Mario Bros plus Mario Kart.

Overall I think Nintendo may just edge out the competition because of really big announcements, although most of them were confirmations of what we already knew, or were speculating. Sony and Microsoft each had some major announcements of their own though, and because of that I say they all win in this years meager E3 battle.

  • Nintendo does not deserve an A

Posted: Jun 08, 2011 12:00AM PST by  xMATTxMAN

There is no way Nintendo deserves and A. The only reason you are giving them an A is because your drooling over the new console or whatever you call it. The entire conference prior to that announcement was a bore fest. New Zelda ya cool but show me some of the game not some flashy video. I want to see some one play the game.

Then you got Mario and Mario Kart same old games for Nintendo. I don't think I saw one thing where they actually showed some one playing a game. Come on this is the time to show us gamers some game play footage not some prerecorded video.

Then you got the 3ds stuff which was all right but still nothing to impressive except the 3d Zelda game that could be cool.

Finally you have the new console/controller/tablet or whatever it is. Yeah that looks cool but every video they showed was a tech demo. I know it's still being developed but they did very little to explain what it is and left many people confused. So how can you give Nintendo an A when Microsoft and Sony clearly had the better conference. There conferences were very informative and kept me entertained and excited where as Nintendo nearly put me to sleep!!

As far as cool new features go, live TV on a console is pretty big. I'm hoping the cost of subscriptions is cheaper than cable. especially since you would need xboxes in every room if you wanted to use it like regular cable. Not to mention acces to a high speed internet plug in every room if you don't have the wireless kit.

When I go to work today, the only thing from E3 that I will talk about is the Nintendo Wii U. Most people don't care about PSPs and exclusives, but most people do own a Wii. A new, innovative console from Nintendo is great water cooler conversation.

Personaly, I am excited for more Halo, plus Xbox 360's new features (ip TV, Kinect controls), but average people don't care about that stuff.

  • Microsoft Presentation great from a Business perspective

Posted: Jun 08, 2011 12:00AM PST by  mrgjr

I can see how a lot of people aren't that impressed with Microsofts presentation, but from business standpoint it was a homerun. I can tell you that in my house and in friends and relatives houses using the Xbox has become the default device for watching movies and catching up on old TV Shows. In addition to that, the Kinect has become a device to use at parties and when friends come over etc... It is really fun for the kids, and adults, to make fools of ourselves with the Kinect games. How many parents do you think aren't going go crazy over the Kinect Kid games they showed? While the hardcore gamer audience may not be impressed, the Kinect and Xbox Live upgrades are going to be a big win for Microsoft wtih the casual gaming crowd which is a much bigger audience than hardcore Gamers.

Nintendo easily wins this year. New system looks cool as hell, and new Super Smash instantly destroys anything Microsoft and Sony announced (more Halos and GoW.....oh great). While yes, Nintendo is still plugging out the same IPs too (Mario/Zelda/Metroid etc), they still win for innovation alone. Although I'd like gaming to move away from motion controls completely, 3D as well. They are both gimmicks and I just want to play, although with the amount of emphasis on the Kinect/Move, I seem to be alone on this one.

Anyway...new Super Smash is enough for me! Until then, I patiently await Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3. Tic-toc-tic-toc....

My scores.....Microsoft C- , Because they showed the least out of the three....Nintendo C , Because they fooled everyone with a new system and no actual games ( they were all tech demos so stop drooling ). And finally Sony gets a B+, and was truely the winner .C,mon a 3-d tv that can project two different images on split screen mode.( thats freaken great) Besides that they announced Vita .Which had real games not tech demos . I'd say that the scores are spot on.  This is the second year in a row that Microsoft failed to go out with a major bang in my book.  But on the same token they still have the 3 franchises I want to play most, Halo, Gears and Forza.

The Playstation Vita is not  a1st day buy for me since im still salty over the lack of support for the PSP at launch so I will wait.

The Wii U is interesting, but reminds me of the Dreamcast controller - only bigger and newer.  I will have to see what it does in real time before I can say yes, must have that.

Out of everything that came out of E3 from Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, the only thing I walk away truly excited about is the Vita. Microsoft came out and talked more Halo like they always do, nintendo talked more Mario like they always do and I see no reason to spend 250-300$ for a Wii U if you already have a ps3 or xbox360. I believe the Vita is more powerful than Wii U and already has some kick ass games coming to it. You do the math.

I know you are all busy covering E3, but when you interview the developers at Naughty Dog, somebody needs to ask them if - in the tradition of their Crash Bandicoot and Jak series - their next game will be Uncharted: Racing. Presumably, that would be very cinematic, story-driven racing, with 'quipy' dialogue.

that Nintendo "won" the conference, but I am holding judgment on the Wii U until further details are revealed.  Can't say that I was excited about the Sony conference, but that is because it primarily focused on the Vita and I am not into hand-helds.  Uncharted 3 is a must-have and I may get the GOW Origins, but I am disappointed there will be no trophy support (from what I read).  I liked Microsoft's conference, voice control in Mass Effect is going to be amazing.  I am also excited about Halo Anniversary and Halo 4.  Was interested in Star Wars Kinect until I saw the presentation.

I don't mean to sound negative but Nintendo was by far the worst of the three. I could be exaggerating a little bit here but a half hour of Zelda talk and an orchestra? Then they show us third party games you'll probably get if you have a 360 or a PS3. I'm a gamer from the 80's and I love the classics but it's getting a little tiring seeing yet another Mario game or a Mario Kart every year. They talk about upcoming 3DS games that should've been available for the 3DS's debut. Then they show us a controller that's basically a Nintendo iPad and no console. Seriously, how much did Nintendo pay you guys to give them an A-?

I think this E3 was pretty good.

If you own a 360 you have to be pretty excited about 3 new Halos. Kinect looks better and better every time I see a new development for it.

Sony's Vista looks great and for $250 I will most likely pick it up. Uncharted 3 is going ot be awesome and cannot wait for the Last Gaurdian.

How can you not be excited about what Nintendo does? If you have any interest in the industry, you have be in wonderment at how Nintendo continues to push the medium forward. I cannot wait for just about every 1st party title including Kid Icarus. As for the 3DS, the future looks bright. Metal Gear 3 and Zelda has me sold.

For all of those that think the Vista will clean the 3DS's clock you better review your history.

As the Princess Bride taught us...

"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is: "Never get involved in a land war in Asia." But, only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line!"

Well I would include getting into a handheld war with Nintendo as a slight third.

Microsoft: C  Can they even make a game that isn't an FPS?  Now that they've added the UFC channel I feel like MS is now the console of the fratfuck/douchebag.  They'll support the kinect with HD Wii Sports games and other gimmicks until E3 2012 when they announce the Xbox 720 and totally abandon the Kinect.  Dont spend your money on it fellas, it's got a years worth of life left and the games are just fancy versions of shit we've already played on the Nintendo Wii.

Sony: C+  If the Vita proves me wrong and really does well this generation I will eat my words, but I'm not betting on it.  I actually think Sony looked better by not showing anything off.  At least I'm not disappointed with another predictiable God of War 4 baloney.

Nintendo: FFFFFF           Frankly the WiiU spawns more questions than it answered and the heavy lip service with all this "reconnecting with the core game" shit makes me sick to my stomach.  Most people are scaling the power of the WiiU to be marginally better than the Xbox 360, but my sense is that the PS4 and the Xbox 720 will eclipse the WiiU pretty fast when they debut next year at E3.  Why would any gamer buy the every-console game on the weakest console?  Where do you want to play Madden (I personally dont) but where do you want to play it on a ripped PS4 that will have the best graphics or a choking WiiU that is basically Xbox 360 era hardware trying to run next gen titles?  For all the talk Ive heard about reconnecting witht he core gamer, all the shit Ive seen so far for the WiiU is the kiddy crap we all shoved in our closets or sold back to Gamestop years ago.  Don't believe the Smash Bros hype either.  They said that was coming with the Wii and it took them over a year to push that out.  It won't be a launch title.  What internet service will they use ? How will the browser work? Will there be a network with a fee?  Games? Games? Games?  Big fucking deal, an Ipad with some buttons.  phailure.

I was there today and I'd have to say Sony came in first in terms of presence (and press conference).  Microsoft made some headlines, of course, but as people said they catered too much to casual and I literally could not believe how boring their press conference was.  Re: Halo 4, if it's done right it can be a hit, but the trailer even wasn't that awesome in my opinion.  Don't even get me started on Nintendo-even with the hype this morning from the WU, that was the one area on the floor I didn't even have much of an interest to stop in, so I just walked through.  But to Nintendo's credit they were packed.

But shouldn't you then take all those points away since MS is forcing you to buy a Kinect to use the voice commands? You do realize that the 360 comes packed with a microphone.  Voice commands should be available for ALL 360 owners.  This is just a ploy (albeit a weak one) to get more people to buy a Kinect.  Guess what MS...we don't all have 6 feet of open space directly in front of our TVs.

The big 3 didn't impress this year.  MS pushed too much Kinect, which wouldn't be a bad thing if they were doing innovative things with it.  Just adding hand motions to games isn't that different from waving a wii mote.

Kinect has enormous potential and no one is tapping it.  Gun forge and voice command for ME looked cool though.

Halo 4.....if they do it right then hell yes.  Who knows whos even making it though.

Nintendo, tablet controller needs to do a lot of convincing to sell me on it.  Looks like another Nintendo dud.

Sony, some great games just like MS, but nothing surprising.  And Vita is a let down for me because I will not spend that much on a hand held.

All in all, a lame E3 showing from the big guys.

...despite the overall vagueness of the WiiU's feature other than it's controller and Wii-compatibility. I dunno. I think they've gone too casual to come back.
Microsoft's was great, if you have a Kinect. Otherwise it was just them touting 3rd party games and pretending to own them. (I miss MSoft first party studios).
I think Sony's was great considering the uphill fight. They seemed to be covering up old weaknesses. The PSP has been pretty weak in the past year or two, so they've basically getting a new start with the NGP, which isn't as caught in between 2 eras as the PSP was( with UMD vs Digital, offline PS2 ports vs Online social features). 3D is way too expensive for people to care about, so they've decided to make it cheaper for the gamers who want it, and support it with the collection games and even U3 and R3( which both looked nice). The Move and motion gaming is still kinda lame, so they're trying to push it towards things by showing it off with more hardcore-oriented titles like BioShock and Resistance. The PSN outage apology concise, and got out of the way in a good manner.
I'd give it to Sony, because Microsoft's Kinect focus wasnt so strong( and if they wouldnt be a 3rd Party press conference like they are every year), and the new WiiU is basically still vague. I mean, the WiiU has a zelda demo, some other unshown titles, almost direct Wii ports, Wii compatibility( for all that damn plastic you have lying around), and a cool controller, but what about the online service? What about the graphics being that of an Xbox 360( or PS3/low-medium end PC/PS Vita)? I dunno...guess we're waiting for TGS for more(...and by TGS I mean Nintendo's annual pre-TGS "we're not going to TGS" event).

How they pulled that off I'll never know but it was awesome.

now about 1UP scores, I actually agree after re-analyzing the conferences. at first i was gonna give sony 1st place, nintendo 2nd then microsoft. but now im giving Nintendo first. but god microsoft conference was BOORRINNGG! pratically everything they annoucned we knew

Microsoft did a good job with Kinect, Gears Demo, and the Halo 4 at the end of their presentation. I give them a B- but they still disappointed me with no further game announcements outside of Kinect and Halo 4.

Sony impressed me with Vita and Uncharted 3 but no new major announced games for the PS3. I give them a B- as well. Move was total fail to me.

Nintendo got me with Luigi's Mansion 2 on the 3DS and I am excited for Wii U but they really left the Wii behind hard with no further Wii announcements. I give them a A- simply for my excitement of the potential of what they shown of their Wii successor. I am a sucker for hardware announcements like this, especially when Nintendo always does something different with their controllers.

Except I'd put Sony and Microsoft both at around a C or B-. Nothing about their conferences impressed or amazed. MS was all as expected, and Sony didn't really have a huge surprise lurking around with Vita with the exception of the price). Sony's show at least could have been better if they showed something on FF VersusXIII, XIII-2 or even The Last Guardian. Microsoft played things the same way they played them last year, and Sony just didn't impress at all; it didn't convince me to get a Vita, and trust me, I thought I wanted one when we first saw it earlier this year. Nintendo I'd put at an A- just because they did bring the games we wanted to see, and their own innovation. I'm still skeptical on Wii U but it's very very interesting.

Nintendo's conference was all over the place. The first 20 minutes was some guy who couldn't speak english talking about Zelda soundtracks. And they finished with the Wii U which I still don't exactly know what the hell the thing is. It's a new console but all they talked about was about the controller being used with the current Wii. Microsoft and it's kinect was nothing new. literally all Microsoft does is. introduce sequels to the handful of really good games we have, something Halo related, and people looking stupid while playing Xbox via the Kinect. Sony's wasn't amazing but it was pretty much what a press conference should be. this is what we're doing with what we have (Move, Eye, Network) here's some of the up and coming stuff (3D technology) and then bam this is what's hot (PS Vita)

I would of given Microsoft a C just for the fact that they showed the games we expected to be there and in my opionon they showed the bare bones or the just enough stuff to for everyone. I will say they showed off some games that look interesting, and some cool new features added to Xbox live. At some point this probably the best console for college students as the Xbox 360 is slowly turning into an all in one entertainment machine. It got really Kinect heavy towards the middle and end of the press conference which I still feel is a gimmick then an actual device to use even in some of the games they shown. I would use the Kinect in a few aspects of some games but not all the time. Its still a interesting idea but still needs some work.

Sony I feel should get a B- for the sake of the vita. Putting that price at $250 against the Nintendo 3DS was a rather bold move while we all felt it could of been alot more expansive. There were some new games shown that was a bit of surprise like the new Sly Cooper game but i felt sony played it really safe considering what they just went through with the PSN hacks. Another reason why for the B- is the fact they signed the deal with At&T for thier wireless source. yea even I as an Iphone user have been through bad receaptions, IN MY OWN HOUSE!

Nintendo would be a B+ to an A- and my reasons for that is Nintendo showed the most promise out of the three press conferences. They showed that they are getting 3rd party support again for thier new hardware and even showing off what games will "look" like on the new console. Of course since the systme will be only slighty better then the Xbox 360 and PS3 I feel that at this point graphics can only do so much for you that you need somethign new. So they showed off the new controller that takes a game from your tv to your hands. Now i am not crazy about the design since it looks like an oversized tablet, but I am interested in what they plan to use it for. Not to mention giving some free stuff to people is always a plus.

you're point 1. 3rd party support = So you're giving them a plus for just catching up to what the Xbox and Playstation 3 has had for awhile

      2. showing what games will look like = the guy (I don't remember his name) said that all of the titles shown on the Wii U are just prototypes and not evidence of what is actually in development.

3.Wii U slightly better then Xbox 360 and PS3 = based off what, No specs where mentioned except 1080i HD which I know PS3 supports and I think the new Xbox's do now as well.

Posted: Jun 07, 2011 12:00AM PST by  naruchief

Nintendo has stated that the console will be slightly better then other two graphically but at this day and age graphics can only get you so far to the point where we need something different then that. Well...yes i am giving them a plus for catching up for Ps3 and Xbox and why I say that? Because the hardcore crowd has been screaming for an HD Wii or something to compete with the other two consoles, not to mention they wanted more hardcore games for thier system rather then depending on only 1st party games and leaving thier wii to gather dust.

Posted: Jun 07, 2011 12:00AM PST by  JironGhrad

The XBox 360 has always done 1080p... they just didn't bundle in the component HD cable in the cheaper models when it first came out (and iirc first gen Arcade models didn't have an HDMI port). The reality of it is that, whatever people might say, the Kinect is the best option for smaller kids. In terms of the motion controls, the Kinect is easier for kids to use and they can't wreck your TV if they take off the wrist strap (no control = win with smaller kids). Add to that the fact that unless you like platformers (and I don't happen to like them much), the Wii has nothing to offer.

The Wii U might have been interesting three years ago, but let's face it... once again Nintendo is banking on their name and rabid fanboi-ism to sell their product. And once again, it's obvious that they will succeed.

bullshit! sony's conference was way way way too boring! LAMO really coby fucking using the dildo to play nba2kwhatever... it was lame. The only saving grace was the price of the ngp and 249.99 was a big middle finger to nintendo. I would give it a B-. Microsofts wasn't excellent but I think it deserves a B+ at least! It was short sweet to the point and more importantly showed games and was not filled with boring fake ass "facts" like sony's. Nintento was great and I agree with the score.

Looking from the perspective of someone who has owned both the 360 and PS3, I found Microsoft's presentation to be the most underwhelming. Sony introduced the Vita, which for someone who hasn't had a portable consol in years looks very promising to me. Also I think the games are stronger, a lot of exclusives, while the best exclusives from Microsoft were Halo 4 (which Bungie isn't involved in, so I'm concerned over that) and Gears of War 3. While Gears is exciting, I'm about sick of hearing about Halo. At this rate its going to become Call of Duty in terms of just milking a cash cow. Apparently, besides a new story, Halo 4 isn't going to bring anything new to the table. Playstation might not have had a bunch of "summer blockbuster explosions" with their games, but at least they didn't have to open with a third party game (COD) for their entrance. That is a scary thought. Even Ken Levine made it a point to show up to SONY's conference, which is huge to me because Bioshock used to be a 360 exclusive, and now he is touting the PS3 as his new focus because of the Move, and I read on IGN that he didn't believe such controls would be possible with the Kinect. I think Nintendo had the strongest for once, no doubt, BUT I do believe Sony had a much better show than Microsoft.

I was ambivalent about Wii U at first, but every hands-on I've read says the controller is surprisingly comfortable to hold. I also like the idea of being able to stream games to the controller so I can play without taking up the TV (although I wish I could take it with me... guess my DS and iPhone will continue to fill that role). However, I've yet to hear anything that really makes me want to rush out and buy one. I'm sure that'll change once a new Metroid is announced, but I'll hold off until then. This thing's going to be pricey.

The rest of the show, at least what we've heard so far, is pretty disappointing. About the only thing that got me excited is Sony's new 3D PS3 TV bundle, and I already have a TV, 3D and weird not-split split screen be damned. No PoP, no FE12, and no Xenoblade. There's already a bunch of good stuff we already knew about, but the lack of exciting announcements is a bit of a downer. See you guys next year, I guess.

I firmly disagree with that rating for the Nintendo press conference. The simple fact that they announced a new console does not give them the e3 "win"....I have to say imo Sony had the best conference and Microsoft a close second. The Ps Vita looks amazing and is priced to compete with the gameless 3DS. That 3D bundle for 500 is SICK and uncharted looked as it should...my whole problem with nintendo's conference was i was confused at the end of it, i didnt know what the hell the wii u was or what it would cost, i honestly thought it was just a new controller for a good hour.

But I think Sony's was well better than Microsoft.  They had some overall new things to show off and didn't rely on expected stuff like Kevin Butler.

Microsoft suffered from "we did the same thing last year" syndrome.    Bring out the Call of Duty stuff... bring out the Tom Clancy stuff... bring out the Gears of War stuff... show off a big name action game (in this case, Tomb Raider), talk about media stuff streaming over Xbox Live, roll into Kinect.   Not as bland as last year, but still very much the same.

I kind of miss J. Allard on the shag carpet.
