The Buzz:
Captain America: Civil War brings Steve Rogers' main arc to a close while kicking-off the journeys (and franchises) of Black Panther and Spiderman. The Russo brothers made a tight, impressive, political thriller with Captain America: Winter Solider, and have described Civil War as a "psychological thriller" with Brian De Palma and the classic Se7en as inspiration. (I really hope no one gets sent a box...) Readers of the Civil War comics may be a little worried about who will make it out of this one alive, but all will be revealed on May 6! Honestly, I'm just super excited to see the Avengers go head-to-head in what critics have been calling the best superhero dust-up of ALL TIME. Can. Not. Wait. #teamcap - Vanessa
The Buzz:
Luca Guadagnino joins the ranks of recent European directors making their English-language debuts. The I Am Love filmmaker re-teams with Tilda Swinton (please let this relationship continue) with a story that sounds quite American on paper, but with all of the truth-telling, sex, slapping, and intense character dynamics, we're happy to see Guadagnino preserving his unique sensibilities as he turns a corner in his early career.
The Buzz:
Nice timing on the release of this 2015 documentary, as Star Wars love is at an all-time high and the first Rogue One footage has everyone believing in the standalone story project. Truly there's no better time than now to revisit Episode IV and meet a handful of people whose lives were forever changed by their appearance in the movie.
The Buzz:
The story of the greatest footballer who ever lived (and never had a fashion line) is told by Michael and Jeff Zimbalist, veterans of ESPN's "30 for 30" serial. Originally completed back in 2013, the project went through a reshoot/reworking period before hitting the festival circuit this year with a debut at Tribeca.
The Buzz:
Beloved in myriad ways, Jean-Luc Godard's commentary on Hollywood melodramas manages to be trashy, pulpy, and morally sound. Hardcore critics consider it one of his most underrated works.
The Buzz:
This audience-pleasing documentary from director Louise Osmond could be one of the most enduring releases of the season. Don't be surprised if you see it on the marquee of your local rep theater for the next couple months.
The Buzz:
Such a quiet release for this drama which was co-written by Rob Reiner's son, Nick, who has battled addiction issues since his teenage years. But this is no memoir of his life. Seems like a role with depth for the talented Nick Robinson, whom we last saw in blockbuster gyrosphere mode.
