Oooh - the hardcore "pro build quality/pro body" snobs will have to have a cry - the D500 is not all metal.
Amateur body with an AF-ON button and "pro" button cluster instead of mode dial ... those guys are gonna really be confused.
D750/D5500 construction.

My D750 has "survived" two hard cement impacts so far, and is still working. Unless you count the faint tilt-shift effect that my sensor gives to wide-open f/1.4 lenses now, haha. Hmm maybe time to send the D750 in for repair.

No it's not a problem - I'm just baiting certain "pro body" snobs who for years have been saying that such and such is not a pro body because it is not all metal or doesn't have a dedicated AF-ON button, or because it does have wireless or a tilty screen etc etc etc.

It's gonna make their ridiculous comments untenable.
Even the D5 has a non proffesional touch screen now....

recapping, this was the big Samsung announcement at CES?

3 possibilities:
A. Rumor was completely bogus.
B. D500 and/or D5 indeed have Samsung guts and the rumor was just off mark (by quite a bit).
C. They do have something cooking for mirroless but not ready to announce it yet. When is the next big trade show?

I find each of them equally likely.

I just got my D7200 delivered by UPS last night at 6 PM...

Unless you plan on shooting blazing fast stuff in impossibly difficult conditions, the D7200 will prove a far better choice than the D500 anyways. Its image quality is already amazing, its AF and everything else are pretty killer, etc... Plus, that was indeed a great deal!

Based on my quick and dirty unscientific tests... this D7200 is actually a tad better in sharpness and low light performance than my D750.

The D750 will beat it for high ISO image quality (noise), but yes, the D7200 actually matches / beats the D750 for base ISO dynamic range, which can result in sharper rendition of details in deep shadows.

Overall, it comes down to the lenses and technique much more than anything else, really. A Rokinon 16mm f/2 at f/5.6 on an AA-less APS-C 24 MP sensor is a wicked-sharp combo, I've already been comparing my D5300 against my D750 for over a year now, and it (the DX combo) matches or beats almost any lens + D750 that I throw at it, save maybe the Sigma Art 24 1.4, and even then the Rokinon has better corners at all apertures.

Either way, I wouldn't pixel-peep too much. Just pick whichever camera suits your needs on a given day, and don't look back. I'm utterly delighted to own both DX and FX 24 MP cameras, they work together very well for travel, landscape, timelapse etc. photography.

Why would anyone care what it is touted as? It still remains a full-frame Swiss Army knife that is eminently affordable.

I dunno about yall, but I see the D750 + D500 as a KILLER combo for pretty much everything from weddings & photojournalism, to landscapes and nightscapes and travel and wildlife and, and...

Why is everybody hung up on having a single camera do everything? I guess I should conisider myself lucky to have always owned 2-3 different Nikon DSLRs at once, as a full-time pro. But now with grey market options putting $1400 D750's in people's hands, I think even a serious amateur / prosumer should consider a 2-body kit if they shoot a wide variety of subjects. Or if not, just pick the right camera for the job and be happy! Both the D750 and D500 are still killer jack-of-all-trade cameras.

Haha.. the D750 is still a "killer" camera itself.
Best all-in-one FX gear of 2015.. and not by accident!

If your back is too weak to carry around a D750 and a lightweight prime, you've got bigger problems than the weight of your camera, and I'd highly recommend some yoga, or a chiropractor, or just general regular exercise.

Now, if you're attempting to lug 2-3 D750's into the wilderness for many miles, then we'll talk.

That and the D750 is the lightest full-frame camera on the market. Interestingly, the D500 is almost exactly the same weight too, which makes it pretty heavy for a DX. Certainly the heaviest in the Nikon lineup, and only loses to the Canon 7D II in pure weight.

Hard to believe a parked DSLR line actually got unparked. Congrats D300/D300S users.

That is really easy to do in AFS mode when the subject is in a confined space like on a balance beam. If you are using AFC there then you should probably switch to AFS.

Won't be usable.

But an usable 400K will be real helpful for sporting events indoors with slower (cheaper and lighter) lenses.

4K UHD video! I admit I did not expect that!

I think 4K was given - had to be at this point.
The interesting thing video wise will be if they have advanced teh feature set or bit rate (other than scaling 4 times for the extra pixels) anymore past what Expeed 4 had.
E.g. focus peaking, false colour, >200 mbit codec.
