Re-Viewed: 10 Things I Hate About You celebrates its 16th birthday

31 March 2015 1:30 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Released just four years after 1995's disarmingly smart Clueless became a teen sleeper hit, 10 Things I Hate About You shared some of its sly, sidelong perspective on high school dynamics, not to mention its literary pedigree. Today marks 16 years since the film's Us release date, meaning 10 Things has officially come of age, but its modern day screwball romance and salty humour hasn't aged a day.

Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew is a less widely-read source text than Jane Austen's Emma, and 10 Things is by necessity a looser adaptation than Clueless - Shrew's much-discussed ending, which concludes that women must learn to be subservient to their husbands, wouldn't fly even as irony in the present day.

Only the skeleton of Shakespeare's plot remains, and proves just how timeless the rom-com conventions which he originated have become. The overprotective father of pretty, popular high schooler Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) forbids her from dating »

Out Of The Dark (2014) – The Review

26 February 2015 7:09 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It’s been some time since I’ve had that feeling of being “had,” going into something with hopeful expectations, only to find out that it was all a ruse. Cinema is often like this, drawing us in, capturing our emotions and interests, even playing off our primal instincts. Michael Bay knows the mass loves explosions, so there are always plenty in his films, all of which appear int he films’ trailers. Trailers are another way that we, as viewers, can be duped. It’s a necessary evil, I suppose. The nature of the marketing beast that, inevitably, will always accompany the anticipation involved with being a movie watcher. This has become something of a cultural agreement of modern society. We tolerate in order to be entertained.

I find it “crazy” how individuals associated with one film, generally applauded for being a success, can turn around and be equally associated with a flop, »

Review: Out Of The Dark, Strong And Persuasive Suspense In South America

26 February 2015 8:00 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Attention, white people: Why do you keep going where you're not wanted? At first blush, Out of the Dark falls easily into the category of horror films in which white people -- usually Americans -- trespass into unknown territories, leading the natives to exact a terrible vengeance upon them. Sarah (Julia Stiles) and Paul (Scott Speedman) move to Colombia, South America with their young daughter Hannah (Pixie Davies). Sarah is meant to become manager of a large paper mill owned by her father, Jordan Harriman (Stephen Rea). The factory is the town's largest employer, and Jordan is proud of his accomplishments to benefit the local populace. Early signs point to trouble in paradise, however. The movie's prelude is filled with dark omens from decades past...

Film Review: ‘Out of the Dark’

25 February 2015 6:43 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ghosts are scary and stuff in “Out of the Dark,” a horror opus just as generic and forgettable as its title. This Colombia-shot supernatural suspenser with American/British leads and a mostly Spanish creative team offers professional polish but no interesting ideas or atmospherics, feeling like a rote echo of numerous already overmilked genre conventions from the get-go. Already released on VOD last month, with a U.S. theatrical launch Feb. 27 on 10 screens around the country, the pic should do its job as a routinely passable time-killer in various formats and various territories. But there’s nothing here that will spark above-average returns, let alone even a direct-to-vid sequel.

After the usual prologue establishing that bad things happen to people who live in the story’s particular setting, we meet the Harrimans as they arrive from London. Sarah (Julia Stiles) is assuming a job as general manager of the Bogota factory owned by her father, »

Julia Stiles: "The roles get more interesting as you get older"

25 February 2015 4:01 PM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Julia Stiles has insisted that she is "excited about maturing" as an actress.

The star told Digital Spy and other press that roles for women "get more interesting as you get older".

"My career is changing, but for the better," she said. "I think I'm maturing as a person and an actress; I'd like to think so, but the roles get more interesting as you get older, despite what I've heard other people say. I'm excited about maturing."

In Lifetime's new series Blue, Stiles plays a single mother who leads a secret double life as a high-class escort.

The star revealed that the show - originally a web series - "got racier as we made more episodes".

"I still am very shy and I get very nervous and self-conscious with those scenes, especially as time goes on," she admitted.

"I'm lucky that one of my best friends is a costume »

Julia Stiles: 'Online abuse is worse than a bad review'

25 February 2015 4:01 PM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Julia Stiles has suggested that online abuse is "worse" than getting a bad review.

Stiles' new series Blue airs on Lifetime in the UK, but started life as a web series on YouTube.

"I was excited about the creative freedom that we would have [online, but] I was a little bit worried about the commenting; the immediate responses that people could post anonymously.

"I think it's worse... the anonymous comments that people can post online, as opposed to a professional critic. I feel people can be inclined to be more nasty because it's anonymous."

She added: "I don't read the comments, and that's because it's like going on a diet for your ego; if you read the good stuff you have to read the bad stuff."

Blue stars Stiles as a single mother who leads a secret double life as a high-class escort.

Julia Stiles hopes for Bourne return: 'I would love to be a part of it'

25 February 2015 4:01 PM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Julia Stiles has said that she is hopeful of returning for the next Bourne movie.

Director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon will both return for their first entry in the franchise since 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum.

Bourne film will not include Matt Damon, Jeremy Renner crossover

Stiles famously played Treadstone operative Nicky Parsons in 2002's The Bourne Identity, and later appeared in sequels.

The actress recently told reporters that she "would love" to reprise her role as Parsons in the next Bourne movie.

"Yeah, they're writing it now so I'm hoping that my character fits into the storyline somehow," she said.

"But Matt and Paul have so much integrity that they waited a long time before making another one, for many reasons, but largely because they wanted a good story there.

"And they're so much fun to shoot, I would love to be a part of it."

Creepy Children Abound in Out Of The Dark [Review]

25 February 2015 3:43 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

What's worse: bad horror movies or mediocre ones that don't leave much of an impression. The latter is the case with Out of the Dark, the latest in a string of Spanish/American co-productions that see Hollywood stars making movies in English that only occasionally see any sort of substantial release in North America. The thing is, sometimes these movies are actually really great, as is the case with Red Lights (trailer) which blew me away when I finally caught up with in on home video a few years ago. This one? Not so much.

Out of the Dark stars Julia Stiles and Scott Speedman as Sarah and Paul Harriman, both actors who have appeared in their share of mediocr [Continued ...] »

Fifty Shades of Grey and 9 More Examples of When Fan Fiction Became Blockbusters

Fan fiction is more prevalent than you might think. With Fifty Shades of Grey being unleashed in theaters Friday, there's no denying that the novel's author, E L James, has brought fan fiction into the spotlight. Originally titled Master of the Universe, James's Twilight fan fiction based on Stephenie Meyer's multi-million dollar franchise first found its home on FanFiction.net. After the racy material within the story forced James to pull it from FanFiction.net, she next hosted Master of the Universe on her own website called 50Shades.com (which now redirects to her official author page).
