BMC Department of Pediatrics Earns National Recognition for Patient-Centered Care

Boston Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce its recent Patient-Centered Medical Home recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), a program that highlights primary care providers who have shown their ability to organize care around patients and work in teams to coordinate, track, and improve care.

The NCQA is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality, accrediting and certifying a wide range of health care organizations. It recognizes clinicians and practices in key areas of performance and its system is the most widely used measurement tool in health care today.

“NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home Recognition raises the bar in defining high-quality care by emphasizing access, health information technology and coordinated care focused on patients,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “Recognition shows that Boston Medical Center has the tools, systems, and resources to provide its patients with the right care, at the right time.”

BMC was awarded Level 3, the highest level recognition possible. Standards met include:

• Patients have long-term partnerships with clinicians, not a series of sporadic, hurried visits
• Clinician-led teams coordinate care, especially for prevention and chronic conditions
• Medical homes coordinate other clinicians’ care and community supports, as needed
• Medical homes offer enhanced access through expanded hours and online communication
• They promote shared decisions, so patients make informed choices and get better results
• Medical homes coordinate care and improve quality, but do not deny care
• They emphasize language and culturally sensitive areas of care
• They cover pediatric topics like parental decision-making, immunizations, and teen privacy
