Hayden Panettiere ‘Wanted to Get Herself Healthy Again’ After Recurrence of Postpartum Depression

Hayden Panettiere is continuing to fight for healthy stability amid her battle with postpartum depression, PEOPLE has learned.

“She is trying to take care of herself. She wanted to get herself healthy again,” an insider tells PEOPLE. “The postpartum has been really scary for everybody, but she’s taking care of it.”

“She’s taking care of herself,” the source adds.

On Thursday, Panettiere, 26, posted a message to fans that she is taking “time to reflect.”

“The postpartum depression I have been experiencing has impacted every aspect of my life,” she tweeted. “Rather than stay stuck due to unhealthy coping mechanisms I have chosen to take time to reflect holistically on my health and life. Wish me luck!”

Last October, Panettiere sought treatment for her postpartum depression after giving birth to her and boxer Wladimir Klitschko‘s daughter, Kaya Evdokia, now 17 months.

Prior to treatment, the actress appeared on Live with Kelly and Michael in September, and the new mom wasn’t ashamed to talk about her battle with postpartum depression.

“There’s a lot of misunderstanding — there’s a lot of people out there that think it’s not real, that’s it not true, that it’s something that’s made up in their minds, that ‘Oh, it’s hormones,’ ” she said to Ripa and Strahan. “They brush it off. It’s something that’s completely uncontrollable. It’s really painful and it’s really scary and women need a lot of support.”

That color just is wrong-does nothing for her, and the opening is showing too much boob!
Are those stretch marks?

She hasn’t spent more than a handful of days with her child since she was born. Selfish and inexcusable. I guess the Nanny’s name must be ‘mom’ to the child, but that is going to get confusing for her. Poor little thing deserves better.

@Lala: and you know this HOW?

I’d say it’s more than Postpartum Depression. I hope she get’s the help she needs.

having her show canceled yesterday isn’t going to help with the depression….. I hope she finds peace.

Too Shy on

Well, she’ll have a lot more time since her show was cancelled.

Eighteen months later…….seems like she is milking it for all its worth. Most people have to get back to the real world, postpartum depression or not. These “stars” baby the crap out of themselves.

I don’t know why I thought that there’d be comments of support here.

You’re all too busy harping on her stretch marks and speculating on her relationship with her baby (the woman had a child- had she had plastic surgery you’d be criticizing her for that. Good for her for embracing her body. They’re scars that she can’t help from contributing another life in the world).

Perhaps it is taking her longer to recover because of inhospitable people like these commenters. She needs support, not harsh and unmerited judgement, to face the very real and very debilitating issue of PPD.

I am so thankful she has taken on a difficult and painful topic and has made it into something to discussay and to fight for healing from.

I am reading the negative comments on here – just to be clear – I am not her biggest fan – however, PPD can RUIN ones life. If she has enough $$ to afford nannies to care for her kids when she can’t – good for her! I TOTALLY would have done the same thing. I am guessing the negative comments are from people who really don’t know what it is like. OR, they are still not recovered from it. Again, not her fan, but wish her well. It is a nightmare and can ruin lives.

@lala is obviously a judgmental imbecile

Postpartum depression just doesn’t go away usually year or two of anti depressants work, she’s going holistic way meaning yoga, mediation, diet and exercise, she’s ditching medication

All you who have nothing but negative comments are absolutely ridiculous! not everyone recovers from post-partum the same way! give this woman a damn beak! at least she is getting help vs neglecting her family.

Entering rehab for postpartum depression (or any depression) does not really help with general awareness of this very real problem.

Most people cannot afford such a luxury. They could not afford the monetary cost nor the time cost.

Celebrities who want to bring real awareness to this real problem need to put some effort into finding real and practical solutions that the average woman could benefit and learn from.

I am not trying to bash her for going to rehab – but I do believe that these posts don’t do anything to help the many other people who suffer but don’t have the luxury to help themselves in this way.

Postpartum depression may take times to recover, it probably needs counseling and medications to help you to recover. But you can beat it with professional help.

It’s hard to say you’re desperately unhappy when you’ve just had a baby. Good for Hayden for getting the help she needs, and for being OPEN about what no one ever talks about. Post-partum depression is real.

@I’mALadyToo: No, you are not. A lady would not throw a new Mom under the bus like that. You lack compassion. I feel sorry for the other humans in your vicinity.

Is she serious, being a parent is hard but come on, I’m a single mother of 2 with no grandparents or nannies all I do is work and kids yes it drives me nuts but that’s life. She needs to get over herself already.

Just Saying on

Haven’t seen her fiance or child with her at all recently. Wonder if he’s taking care of the baby?
