'Star Wars: Force Awakens' First Ever to Cross $900 Million Domestically

10 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

With an estimated $1.76 million yesterday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the only film to cross $900 million domestically and it has achieved that milestone in only fifty days. In addition to this watershed moment, by the end of today, Saturday, February 6, Star Wars is expected to become only the third film in history to cross the $2 billion mark worldwide and it will have done so in only 53 days. Considering how quickly Force Awakens has achieved these accomplishments, putting them into any kind of comparable context is nearly impossible. It took Star Wars only 20 days to beat the previous all-time domestic record of $760.5 million held by Avatar. It took Avatar not only 318 days to achieve that number, but two separate releases. As for the worldwide number, Star Wars and Avatar are the only two films to actually cross $2 billion worldwide upon their initial release while it took Titanic two separate releases to cross $2 billion. »

Disney Sues Stan Lee Media, Finds Bank Accounts Empty

5 February 2016 2:31 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in 1998, comic book legend Stan Lee formed a startup company entitled Stan Lee Media, to manage a growing list of new characters that were being created. Shortly thereafter, Stan Lee himself cut ties with the company, before it went bankrupt in 2000. While that would normally be the end for a company like this, the defunct Stan Lee Media went ahead and sued Disney several times, starting in 2007, claiming they owned the rights to superhero characters created by Stan Lee, such as Spider-Man. Disney won every time, but now, according to Pirated Thoughts, the studio is now suing Slm, over nearly a half million dollars in unpaid legal fees.

Stan Lee Media never claimed that they owned the rights to several characters until the bankrupt company started filing lawsuits against Disney in 2007, at least six of them. The lawsuits claimed that Stan Lee transferred the rights to beloved characters like Spider-Man, »

Deadpool to Power Rangers: comic-book movies' new irreverence

5 February 2016 9:07 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Gloriously off-message and packed full of punky insouciance, the current crop of superhero films suggests we’re entering an era in which even the silliest of source material can shine

In The Dark Knight, which arguably ushered in the modern comic-book film era, the Joker’s “Why so serious” refrain is a call to arms in the face of mankind’s refusal to buy into his distinctive brand of psychopathic glee. Why bother with the burden of the human condition, wonders Heath Ledger’s killer clown, when it’s far easier to freewheel murderously through life without a care in the world?

Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is often seen as the dark, brooding counterbalance to the cheerier Marvel movies that followed it. And yet in many ways, Ledger’s cackling, sociopathic performance supercharged the trilogy’s 2008 middle instalment in the same way as Joss Whedon’s diamond-cut dialogue rocket-fuelled 2012’s The Avengers. »

‘Lego Marvel’s Avengers’ Review (PS4)

4 February 2016 8:01 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

When it comes to Lego games they are pretty reliable. They have that humour that we can expect, they understand the audience they are catering for and they know how to treat the licenses they are entrusted with well… Which is exactly what they have done with Lego Marvel’s Avengers.

While we’ve seen Marvel characters in Lego games before, they’ve not been based on the popular movies and not had a focus on The Avengers. This has changed with Lego Marvel’s Avengers as we play through the first film, and Age of Ultron with all the characters we expect from the movies. After these have been completed we are then offered a few extra levels based on the movies that have led up to, and followed the Avenger movies.

If you’ve played a Lego game before you know what to expect. You’ll fight waves of enemies, »

Why you shouldn’t hold your breath for a new Incredible Hulk movie

2 February 2016 10:00 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Just yesterday, I was browsing the Internet when I came across The Incredible Hulk Slot game. In that moment, I began to think about the breadth and the appeal of the Hulk character, and how Marvel has successfully turned him and similar superheroes into international brands and franchises.

With this in mind, it is worth noting that many Marvel fans have been holding their breath waiting for an announcement concerning a new Incredible Hulk film. After all, a revitalised Hulk and Bruce Banner stole the show in the Joss Whedon-directed Avengers, and many felt that the time has come for a new solo adventure.

In terms of a brief history, the Hulk’s appearances in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron came on the back of two failed solo instalments for the Jade Giant. Ed Norton failed to shine in the role, with many citing the portrayal of »

This summer, Captain America: Civil War kicks off Marvel Phase Three, which culminates with the epic two-part adventure Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Avengers: Infinity War - Part II, arriving in 2018 and 2019, respectively. One of the biggest pieces of the Marvel Phase Three puzzle is Thanos (Josh Brolin), although we don't know when we will actually get to see him next. While doing press for his new movie Hail, Caesar!, Josh Brolin teased that he's about to meet with Marvel's Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito and Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, where they will hash out Thanos' future in the McU.

"So Kevin [Feige], Louis D'Esposito - who I've known for a long time, since he was a First Ad that I worked with on Hollow Man with Paul Verhoeven - and then the brothers... the Russo brothers. I get together with them next week, maybe the week after, »

Iron Man 2 Writer Justin Theroux Reflects On Fan Reaction To The Divisive Sequel

2 February 2016 2:05 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Iron Man 2 is widely considered a disappointment by fans, mostly because it spent far too much time trying to balance Tony Stark’s story with a huge amount of set up for The Avengers.

In a new interview, screenwriter Justin Theroux has weighed in on the mixed reaction to the Jon Favreau helmed sequel, revealing that while he doesn’t regret certain parts of Iron Man 2, there are plenty of good reasons why it didn’t quite live up to expectations. However, perhaps hoping that he’ll get another chance to work with the studio, Theroux makes sure not to lay the blame for that at anyone’s feet in particular.

“You know, as happens very often, it is not easy to live up to expectations. And after the first ‘Iron Man,’ those for the sequel were extremely high. [You] go to see [the film] with a wealth of expectations…and »

Justin Theroux Reflects On Iron Man 2 Woes And Why He Didn't Think The Avengers Would Work

2 February 2016 7:42 AM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Iron Man 2 is one of Marvel's more divisive movies, and the crammed screenplay is perhaps the reason for that. Introducing new characters, villains, an arc about Tony Stark dying, and lots of nods to The Avengers, there was just way too much going on. That's something screenwriter Justin Theroux seems to agree with as he acknowledged in a recent interview that things on the sequel didn't quite go the way they were hoping.  "You know, as happens very often, it is not easy to live up to expectations," he said. "And after the first ‘Iron Man,’ those for the sequel were extremely high. [You] go to see [the film] with a wealth of expectations…and the film had a release date even before we started working on it so we had to work fast. And I will not complain about anything or anyone, mind you…It was a team effort and I »

Iron Man 2: "we tried to please the fans"

Screenwriter Justin Theroux has been chatting about where Iron Man 2 went wrong - and how he thought The Avengers wouldn't work.

It's been over five years since Iron Man 2's release, a film that was something of a bump in the road for Marvel. Whilst it made no shortage of cash, the movie remains one of the firm's more disappointing. We'd still argue that the opening 40 minutes or so are very good mind, it's just it never quite gels after that.

Justin Theroux was one of the screenwriters on Iron Man 2 (that was directed by Jon Favreau and, of course, starred Robert Downey Jr), and he's on the promotional trail for Zoolander 2 right now, which he's also penned. And he's been chatting about where Iron Man 2 went wrong.

Will Volstagg Return in 'Thor: Ragnarok'?

1 February 2016 6:56 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With Thor: Ragnarok set to start production this summer in Australia, there have been no shortage of rumors swirling around the project over the past few weeks. A report surfaced last week that the villain of this story is Hela, who may be portrayed by Cate Blanchett. And we also know that Mark Ruffalo is returning as Hulk. Ray Stevenson, who played Volstagg in Thor and Thor: The Dark World, recently revealed in an interview with Geeks Worldwide that he still isn't sure yet if he is returning as this character.

"I'm still in the dark in regards to that, but I'm absolutely blown away to be apart of something that so influential and integral in a part of our generation in regards to movie watching and this Marvel Universe. Its absolutely incredible and if there's a place for Volstagg then great, but right now I don't know. He was great to play. »

The Week in Star Wars – Ewan McGregor talks The Force Awakens, Boba Fett in Rogue One, more movies after Episode IX, Kevin Smith’s role in The Force Awakens revealed and more

Your weekend edition of The Week in Star Wars has a look at the costumes for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Harrison Ford presenting Star Wars Land, more movies after Episode IX and writer-director Kevin Smith’s role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally revealed…

We’re kicking things off this week by looking – get this – past Star Wars: Episode IX. When Disney first announced they’d purchased the rights to make more Star Wars movies, they initially announced a new trilogy to take us up to 2019, which was then followed up announcements for spin-off (or Anthology) movies in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (with rumours of a Boba Fett one in there too). It was assumed by the fanbase that this new trilogy would then mark the end of Star Wars. No so, says Disney’s Bob Iger. »

Thor Ragnarok: 10 Big Questions From What We Know So Far

29 January 2016 4:48 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Marvel Studios

After the disappointing disjointedness of Thor: The Dark World, the pressure is on for Marvel Studios to correct the course of its Asgardian film franchise and make Thor: Ragnarok far better than its dismal predecessor. The last thing anyone one wants to see is a repeat of that half-arsed Malekith origin story.

Thankfully, early signs seem to be promising for Thor: Ragnarok. Marvel has ditched Alan Taylor in favour of What We Do In The Shadows’ writer-director and sometime Flight Of The Conchords scripter Taika Waititi. He’s promised to inject more comedy, and quickly recruited Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk for the film. Both sound like good ideas on paper.

There’s still a lot that the general public don’t know about the God of Thunder’s next cinematic outing, though, including these ten big questions…

Why That 'Legends of Tomorrow' shocker was a smart move

29 January 2016 3:27 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Legends of Tomorrow concluded its two-part pilot last night, and it featured a surprising character death that not only catalyzed the team, but opened the door for some very interesting storytelling.  Spoiler warning: This article contains speculation on a major plot point from the Legends of Tomorrow episode "Pilot Part 2". Last night's episode of Legends of Tomorrow showed what happens when the team tries to solve their problems on their own, without functioning as a group. Doctor Martin Stein (Victor Garber) charged into the arms deal and let slip he was from the future. Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) tried to be cleverly break into Vandal Savage's (Casper Crump) property, and invariably set of an alarm. At one point Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) even told Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) — the Time Master — to step back and get out of the way. This kind of team jostling is typical when characters aren't used to working together, »

Hulk Story Arc Connects 'Thor 3' and 'Avengers: Infinity War'

29 January 2016 9:46 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Thanks to both director Taika Waititi and star Mark Ruffalo doing press for their new movies, we've gotten a lot of interesting details regarding Thor: Ragnarok as of late. While promoting the Oscar-nominated Spotlight, Mark Ruffalo once again shot down rumors of a stand alone Hulk movie in an interview with Yahoo! Movies. However, he did tease that his story arc in Thor: Ragnarok will "feel" like its own movie, and that it connects to the upcoming two-part adventure Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Avengers: Infinity War - Part II.

"I'd love to do a Hulk movie, but that's beyond my control. It's controlled by Universal. Marvel doesn't even hold the rights to it. So, it's not on the horizon. And I don't know if it will be. But we've worked a really interesting arc into Thor 3, Avengers 3 and Avengers 4 for Banner that I think will - when »
