Nikon has done something new with the tolerances in the autofocus system. I was shocked at having to fine-tune lenses (300 f2.8 VR, 500 f4 AF-S) that I considered perfect. Now I don't crop much but I can say this: I can crop much deeper with the D500 than I ever could with the D7100. There is no doubt in my mind that I'm getting much more accurate focus than I could with any of my previous DX DSLRs. 100% crop:
