Tom Cruise will live, die and repeat again in Edge of Tomorrow sequel

8 April 2016 10:26 AM, PDT

Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are re-teaming for a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, the successful sci-fi movie about a military officer who aquires the ability to re-set the day in the midst of an alien war.

We loved Edge of Tomorrow, which was an extremely smart, fun, and a surprisingly deep action/sci-fi/thriller that essentially took the premise of Groundhog Day and inserted it into a story about an apocalyptic alien war. There simply isn't another action star that can sell this kind of twisted premise like Tom Cruise, who totally owned it.

One of the best parts of Edge of Tomorrow was Emily Blunt, who proved just how fierce she can be, and who totally held her own against Cruise. We don't know yet if she will return for the sequel.

The ending of the first film did hint at the prospect of a sequel, and »

I Saw the Light, The Boss and Hardcore Henry make @TannerZee's what-to-watch list

8 April 2016 7:00 AM, PDT

On the big-screen this weekend: Melissa McCarthy goes to jail, we find a whole new way to experience an action movie, and Loki trades in the scepter for a pair of cowboy boots.

The Boss

Melissa McCarthy’s character hits rock bottom in The Boss. Melissa plays Michelle Darnell, the richest woman in America, who is suddenly bankrupt when she's convicted of insider trading. When I was nine, somebody erased my 98% complete Super Mario saved game. I feel like Michelle Darnell and I have a lot in common. But just like that winter I spent starting a new game in Super Mario, Michelle is on a mission to get it all back. The Boss also stars a ton of hilarious and talented people like Peter DinklageKathy Bates, and Kristen Bell. If you’re aGuardians of the Galaxy fan, be on the lookout for Dave Bautista too.

The April Fools: Our favourite moments from Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen and James Franco

8 April 2016 7:00 AM, PDT

It's a rather happy coincidence that Jay BaruchelSeth Rogen, and James Franco all share April as their birthday month.

The three funny men seem to be pretty good friends in real life as far as we can tell, and it totally shows in their work. Collaborating on countless films, TV shows and side projects, and making us laugh harder and harder each time, these three dudes have taken their friendship to the big screen and it's made for epic results.

In celebration of their birthdays, Jay who turns 34 on April 9th, Seth who turns 34 on April 15th, and James who turns 38 on April 19th, we're looking back at all of their hilarious collaborations, in chronological order. Let's go!

"Freaks and Geeks" (1999-2000)

The extremely short-lived television series created by Paul Feig and produced by Judd Apatow, jump-started both Seth Rogen and James Franco's careers. In our opinion, it's »

Rodgers and Hammerstein return to the silver screen with Carousel

8 April 2016 7:00 AM, PDT

No one is exactly sure why Frank Sinatra walked off the set of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical Carousel(1956) on the first day of shooting.

Some say it was because he didn’t want to film some scenes twice — once in regular CinemaScope and once in CinemaScope 55 — and others claim it was due to marital problems he was having with wife Ava Gardner.

The producers asked Gordon MacRae — who had starred with Carousel’s leading lady Shirley Jones the year before in Oklahoma! — to take over the starring role of Billy Bigelow. The film opens in heaven with the deceased Billy being told his wife and child are in trouble down on Earth. Through flashbacks we see how hot-tempered carnival barker Billy falls for the sweet Julie (Jones), and how he turns to crime to provide for her when he discovers she’s going to have a baby.

While Sinatra possessed a golden voice, »

Charlize Theron is back on the road in Fast and Furious 8

7 April 2016 11:11 AM, PDT

While we're still not over her slaying her role as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road,  Charlize Theron is now headlining the next biggest road movie, Fast and Furious 8.

The actress has always impressed us with how fierce, confident and strong she is, and now she will be joining Vin DieselDwayne JohnsonJason StathamMichelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson in the long-running racing franchise.

All we know about her role so far is that she'll be some sort of villain in the film. This is music to our ears, as she's easily the best villainous we know, as proven in films where she is literally evil like Snow White and the Huntsman(and the prequel, The Huntsman: Winter's War), winning Oscars for playing a serial killer in Monster, or even just being a super annoying woman-child in Young Adult.

As if we needed more reason to be excited for »

Chloe Grace Moretz ruins Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne's lives in new red band trailer for Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

7 April 2016 10:16 AM, PDT

Girls are just as rowdy as boys, even if Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne would like to think otherwise.

They learn the hard way, when the couple who is now having their second child, move into a new home that is beside a sorority, lead by Chloe Grace Moretz. They just can't catch a break! Thinking it'll be fine because girls won't give them the same trouble that the frat lead by Zac Efron did in the first film, they soon realize that this sorority is actually even crazier than Efron and co. Now they have to actually enlist Efron to help them fight against these partying college girls.

The Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising red band trailer looks even funnier than the first film, and we like seeing Rogen and Efron working together instead of being at odds. Hopefully it'll work out in their favour.

Star Wars fangirls and boys unite! A Rogue One trailer is finally here!

This morning marked the debut of the first teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars story and it looks epic. We clearly did not get enough of our Star Wars fix after The Force Awakens blew up this summer, and having a sneak peak at December's Rogue One has just got us hyped up all over again.

The film follows a group of rebel spies on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, which at the time was the Galactic Empire's new weapon. The events of the film take place shortly before Star Wars: A New Hope.

Melissa McCarthy is easily the reigning queen of comedy.

Her latest film, The Boss, is just further proof of how skilled McCarthy is at honing a comedic character, and giving it absolutely everything she's got. From what we can tell in these five new clips from The Boss, McCarthy is going all out.

The film has her playing Michelle Darnell, a former industry titan who is clawing her way back to the top after a stint in prison for insider trading. She hires Kristen Bell as her assistant. The two make for an off-kilter duo, and the results are hilarious.

5 April 2016 10:25 AM, PDT

The film-making powers of Steven Spielberg, Disney, and Roald Dahl combine to make an epic fantasy adventure.

Many of us grew up reading Roald Dahl's books. The Bfg was always a stand-out favourite, and the stunning new trailer for the film has us super excited.

The film tells the story of 10-year-old Sophie who mysteriously encounters The Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance), who brings her to the magical world of Giant Country. Sophie is scared at first, but discovers how gentle and good-natured The Bfg is in comparison to the other mean giants who live in this country. The two become good friends, but Sophie's presence in Giant Country causes a stir among the other inhabitants.

Check out the trailer for The Bfg below, and see the film when it hits theatres on July 22nd. »

Canadian Spotlight: Nick Serino on Sleeping Giant

5 April 2016 7:00 AM, PDT

If you happen to stop by a Tim Hortons in Thunder Bay, take a close look at the teenager behind the counter, he may be Nick Serino, one of the stars of the award-winning Canadian drama Sleeping Giant.

“There’s been a couple people who I’ll serve them coffee or something, and they’ll say, ‘I really enjoyed your movie,’ it’s pretty cool,” says the 18-year-old on the line from his home in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Sleeping Giant, directed by first-time filmmaker Andrew Cividino, finds shy teen Adam (Jackson Martin) spending his summer vacation at his cottage on the shores of Lake Superior where he hangs out with local kids Riley (Reece Moffett) and Nate (Serino). Nate is the trio’s troublemaker; mouthy, energetic, funny and increasingly jealous of the time Riley is spending with Adam and his family.

Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano star in the craziest trailer you'll see this year, for Swiss Army Man

4 April 2016 10:19 AM, PDT

Paul Dano is about to find a very unlikely friend.

Swiss Army Man was easily the most buzzed about title out of this year's Sundance Film Festival, and the first trailer for the film is good proof of why. The film follows Dano, who is stranded on a desert island and is suicidal. Something surprising saves his life, however, as he discovers a dead corpse (Daniel Radcliffe) who becomes his new companion, and reason to live.

The absurd dark comedy divided audiences at the festival, so watch the trailer and see this spectacle for yourself, farts and all.

Swiss Army Man opens in theatres on June 17th. »

Jean-Marc Vallee on losing himself in the material while making Demolition

4 April 2016 7:36 AM, PDT

Making Demolition was a very cathartic experience for all involved, but especially director Jean-Marc Vallee.

The film which tells the story of a "Wall Street" type, Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal) who loses his wife in a car accident, is very heavy, yet uplifting material. Dealing with themes of grief, loss, and self-discovery, we follow Davis as he turns this tragic event into a reason to re-evaluate his life, and who he is.

The film opened the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, where we had the chance to speak to the Quebecois director. Vallee has had a good track record recently in garnering his actors accolades (Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for their performances in Vallee'sDallas Buyers Club, while Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in his film Wild). We're hoping this means Oscar prospects for Jake, »

Quiz: Movie Bosses

4 April 2016 7:00 AM, PDT

Everyone will have to deal with a boss at some point in their lives.

Sometimes you're lucky and have a really cool, chill boss. In the movies, however, bosses are rarely chill. They're typically either mean, powerful, or downright crazy. Hopefully you've never encountered a boss like most of the ones featured in this week's quiz.

On Friday, Melissa McCarthy is taking her shot at playing the big boss, Michelle Darnell, in a film aptly called The Boss. Like most of McCarthy's characters, Michelle has her eccentricities, including having gone to prison for insider trading. When she emerges, she hires Kristen Bell as her assistant, and hilarity ensues.

Take our quiz on movie bosses below, and see The Boss when it hits theatres on April 8th. »
