‘I Love Dick’: Kevin Bacon Talks ‘Redefining What It Means to Be a Dick’ in Jill Soloway’s New Amazon Pilot

7 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

On Aug. 19, Amazon Studios dropped the pilot for one of the most fascinating and unconventional television projects ever — a series adaptation of the landmark feminist work “I Love Dick,” an epistolary novel that crisscrosses through feminist theory, philosophy, and thwarted desire. The book, technically a work of fiction, is a collection of love letters that filmmaker Chris Kraus writes to attempt to seduce a macho academic named Dick — with the surprisingly enthusiastic help of her husband Sylvère. Ultimately, the book is a journey of soul-searching for Chris; but it’s complicated by the fact that Chris, husband Sylvère, and object of infatuation Dick are all real people with those real relationships to each other. The 1994 book has a place in the pantheon of feminist narratives; Soloway’s girlfriend, the poet Eileen Myles, wrote an introduction to the 2006 version.

Soloway’s adaptation is filmed and set in the present, in arty Marfa, Texas »

‘The Departed’ Series Being Developed by Amazon

23 August 2016 10:06 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

The TV-shows-based-on-movies trend continues. After yesterday’s news that Crackle is developing a series based on Guy Ritchie’s “Snatch” comes the announcement that Amazon is adapting Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed.” “Detroit 1-8-7” creator Jason Richman is writing the series, which shifts the action from Boston to Chicago and centers around a cop who goes undercover to infiltrate a Latino gang — which has a mole of its own on the police force.

Scorsese’s film, which won the celebrated filmmaker a long-awaited Oscar for Best Director and also took home prizes for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay, was released in 2006 to critical and financial success. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon played the two main characters; it’s yet to be announced who will star in the equivalent roles (or any other, for that matter).

The Perfect TV Diet: What Shows You Should Watch to Stay Healthy

22 August 2016 3:28 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In today’s day-and-age of “peak TV,” so much of the conversation about television focuses on which shows you should be watching. Well, what kind of shows you watch is just as important as which specific shows you choose to engage with in your spare time.

For instance, if you merely chose your shows by which ones are “the best,” your lineup may look something like this:

“O.J. Made in America

“The Americans”

The Night Of

Game of Thrones

“The People v. O.J. Simpson

“Fargo”

The above list is a combination of the three highest-rated programs of the 2016 season (according to Metacritic) and the three most nominated series at this year’s Emmys. Do you notice anything similar between the six shows? Other than two programs focusing on O.J. Simpson, the commonality across all six is their general genre: drama. They’re all dark, heady, hour-long dramas.

I Love Dick review – I can't get enough, please can we have more?

Amazon’s pilot season includes Jill Soloway’s relationships comedy, starring Kevin Bacon as the titular cultural theorist. It shouldn’t even have to audition

It is rather extraordinary to find Jill Soloway’s new comedy I Love Dick appearing as part of Amazon’s comedy pilot season. This is partly because Soloway is the creator of Transparent, an Amazon series that was hosed down with awards and is soon to begin its third season. She, of all people, shouldn’t have to audition.

Amazon’s ‘I Love Dick’ review: ‘A sardonic, intellectual triumph.’

19 August 2016 1:48 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

I Love Dick review: Kevin Bacon returns to the small screen in this new Amazon pilot for 2016.

Read our full I Love Dick review below.

In the newest round of Amazon’s democratic pilot process, I Love Dick proves to be a bold, unwavering attempt at piercing the ‘inner circle’ of our culture’s comedy club, and does so by being so utterly and completely out of the box. Director Jill Soloway, along with co-creator Sarah Gubbins’ (from the book itself) I Love Dick sees our protagonist, Chris (played by Kathryn Hahn) and the title character (Kevin Bacon) meet by chance, forcing Hahn’s character into a state of psycho-sexual obsession. What follows is a smart, skillful and simultaneous death and rebirth of a wilting marriage, the beginning of what is sure to be a tale of an unwavering sexual reawakening, and a tone so grounded it feels entirely true »

Kevin Bacon on How His ‘I Love Dick’ Character Is Much More Than Just a Dick

Kevin Bacon wants you to know that “Dick” isn’t an asshole.

Bacon stars in the new Amazon pilot “I Love Dick” as the title character, the prickly (and somewhat mysterious) leader of an artists’ enclave in the tiny town of Marfa, Texas. Kathryn Hahn plays Chris, a filmmaker who comes to town with her husband, author Sylvere (Griffin Dunne).

Transparent” executive producer Jill Soloway (who also directed the pilot) and Sarah Gubbins are behind “I Love Dick,” which is based on a 1997 novel that has become a cult favorite for its exploration of men and women relationships. On the show, Chris quickly finds herself attracted to Dick, and a complicated dance between all three of them promises to change all of their lives.

I Love Dick review – a treat for the intellect and the heart

19 August 2016 9:47 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Transparent creator Jill Soloway recasts the cult novel about academics in a love triangle into a show that’s innovative, well-acted and visually sumptuous

I Love Dick, the latest show by Transparent creator Jill Soloway, boasts many amazing scenes, but the best is a sex fantasy that imagines what media would be like from the female gaze. Movies and TV shows are littered with instances of men dreaming about women they are obsessed with but can’t have – think Kevin Spacey’s rose-strewn sexcapades in American Beauty – but here, a woman imagines being sexually pleasured by a man in a restaurant bathroom. Rather than naked breasts and breathy seductions, we see waiters carrying plates with stuffed rabbits, a confident guy telepathically intuiting a woman’s needs, and a stoic stock figure of American masculinity filling out a white T-shirt in a way that hasn’t been seen since James Dean’s death. »

Amazon Pilot Reviews: ‘The Tick,’ Jill Soloway’s ‘I Love Dick’ & ‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson,’ Ranked

19 August 2016 8:19 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Jean-Claude Van Johnson

“’Timecop’ is like ‘Looper’ with Bruce Willis, but a million times better,” is just one of the gems spoken in “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” which is as gloriously ridiculous as its title.

What the Amazon pilot lacks in plot — action star Jean-Claude Van Damme comes out of retirement to act as a private contractor specializing in kicking ass and doing the splits — it makes up for with indiscriminate jabs at everything and anyone, including its star, Hollywood, pretentious foodies and even America’s Undulating Beefcake, Channing Tatum. A surprising appearance by Phylicia Rashad, who gamely plays Jean-Claude’s agent, is a comic revelation. She delivers the most absurd movie pitches with such enthusiasm that we’re ready to sign up for the “P.F. Chang’s” biopic ourselves.

The only real disappointment is the lackluster treatment of Jean-Claude’s love interest Vanessa (Kat Foster), who isn’t given much to work with story-wise. »

Emmy-Nominated Comedy Series Production Designers Discuss Their Craft

17 August 2016 9:15 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Need your series to pop? Great production design that underscores tone, theme, and character is key. But while the best design doesn’t overshadow the action for viewers, designers are as devoted to detail in the construction of their sets as they would be if they were building their own homes. Variety spoke with the five Emmy nominees for production design for a narrative program (half-hour or less) to discuss the vagaries of locating pecky cypress wood, fashioning click farms in Culver City, and what happens when you relocate the White House to the West Coast. Trust them: production design is much more than putting up walls.

The Big Bang Theory

Four-time Emmy winner John Shaffner has six nominations for CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” and 20 other noms over the course of his career, which kicked off with theater design for Joseph Papp in the late 1970s. But his real challenge this year was finding a way »
