Keegan-Michael Key On Why Less Money Means Smarter Movies, and Why the Whole Country Needs Anger Translators — SXSW 2017

22 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

As half the duo who created the now-defunct comedy series “Key & Peele,” Keegan-Michael Key knows a lot about being funny. Perhaps just as notably, neither he nor longtime collaborator Jordan Peele will let themselves be defined by it.

While the pair co-wrote and starred in last year’s missing-cat romp “Keanu,” their more recent work shows considerable effort to work outside the confines of comedy. Peele recently made his directorial debut with the wildly successful racially themed horror film “Get Out,” and Key has cast a wide net with his acting gigs. Last year, he had a major role in Mike Birbiglia’s ensemble piece about an improv troupe, “Don’t Think Twice,” and he’s currently shooting Shane Black’s big-budget reboot “The Predator.” This month, he’ll surface in “Win It All,” Joe Swanberg’s latest effort, which is produced by Netflix and will premiere at the SXSW »

Overboard Remake Happening with Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez

6 March 2017 5:18 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

MGM has brought on Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez to star in the studio's remake of the 1987 comedy classic Overboard, which starred Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Pantelion Films is also producing this comedy remake, which is already aiming to start production this May in Vancouver. This new comedy takes the conceit from the original classic, though and turns it on its ear.

The original movie followed Goldie Hawn as a snobby, wealthy woman who suffers a head injury when she falls off of her yacht, and is taken to the hospital by a working-class carpenter, played by Kurt Russell. When she wakes up in the hospital, she has amnesia, with the carpenter convincing the woman that she is his wife. This reboot flips the script, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Eugenio Derbez playing a spoiled playboy from one of Mexico's wealthiest families, who falls off his yacht and becomes convinced by a single, »

Get Out Is Just the Beginning - Jordan Peele Is Working on 4 More Horror Movies

2 March 2017 8:40 AM, PST | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

If you loved Get Out, some exciting news from Jordan Peele is going to make your day. In an interview with Insider, Peele casually mentioned that his recent hit horror film is just the first in a series of thrillers he plans to make about social injustices. "I have four other social thrillers that I want to unveil in the next decade . . . The best and scariest monsters in the world are human beings and what we are capable of especially when we get together. I've been working on these premises about these different social demons, these innately human monsters that are woven into the fabric of how we think and how we interact, and each one of my movies is going to be about a different one of these social demons." Furthermore, in a Reddit Ama from last month, a fan asked if Get Out takes place in the same universe as his 2016 comedy Keanu, »

The Current Debate: Sharp Politics in "Get Out"

2 March 2017 8:11 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Jordan Peele’s new film, Get Out, has received a considerably warmer welcome than last year’s Keanu, Peele’s screenwriting debut (with Alex Rubens), in which he co-starred with his longtime comedy partner Keegan-Michael Key. That movie was rooted in the duo’s five-season run on the Comedy Central sketch show Key & Peele, and suffered for it; Get Out, Peele’s directorial debut, feels comparatively substantial, in part because it translates the incisive satire of Peele’s comedy to a new and equally effective genre: horror. As Manohla Dargis writes at The New York Times, the movie’s opening scene sets the tone:Mr. Peele is after more than giggles and shocks; he’s taking on 21st-century white racism and its rationales. The opener — a black man talking on a cellphone on an empty suburban street — briskly sets the tone, unsettles the mood and announces Mr. Peele’s way with metaphor. »

Why Get Out Director Jordan Peele Won’t Direct A Superhero Flick

27 February 2017 4:19 PM, PST | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Keegan Michael Key and Get Out director Jordan Peele (pictured right).

Marvel Studios has sort of revolutionized the way directors are brought onto big picture projects. Back in the day, there would be a very traditional ramping up of one’s directorial skills. They’d start off small, and build up over the course of a decade or so. With the onset of cinematic universes and franchises, things have changed. No longer do directors have to work up to these big budgets. Instead, studios surround great storytellers with an experienced crew. At Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige’s mentality is "if they can make a good story with $10 million, they can make a good story with $100 million,” and it’s one that’s served them well so far. Now, whenever some small film hits it big, movie fans are left to wonder if its director will be next to get paired »

Newswire: Popstar is best picture of the year (at All Def Awards)

27 February 2017 9:09 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The Oscars may have come and gone—some even slipping right out of a recipient’s grasp—but that doesn’t mean awards season is over. We mean, it mostly is, but there are certainly other accolades to be distributed, other cinematic achievements to be lauded. Take the All Def Movie Awards, a Russell Simmons creation, which were held on February 22. That ceremony also handed out many prestigious prizes, including Most Out of Place White Person, which was awarded to all of the nominees, astoundingly enough. Tiffany Haddish picked up only the second ever Bad Ass Boss Chick award for her role in Keanu, while her costar Luis Guzman won for Best Latino Not in a Service Industry Role.

But the biggest prize of the night was still Best Picture, which went to Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Filmmakers The Lonely Island responded to their victory on Twitter, where ...

Get Out Earns $30.5 Million on Oscar Weekend

26 February 2017 1:16 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Blumhouse's Get Out, the Jordan Peele horror/comedy/social commentary, parlayed its glowing critical reception for a stunning $30.5 million Oscar weekend in 2,781 theaters and a very respectable $10,976 per-screen average. The other new films, Lionsgate/Summit's animated flick, Rock Dog, at $3.7 million, fell just outside of the top 10, while the critically-derided inanimate Collide, from Open Road, spun out at $1.53 million in 2,045 theaters for an abysmal $753 per theater.Get Out, a film where an African-American man notices his girlfriend's family estate may be hiding a sinister secret, had a surprise sneak premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, which set the stage for its critical success. The film maintains a rare 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a healthy 8.1 IMDb rating and an A- on CinemaScore. That means the horror film should see an easy falloff next weekend even as the Groundhog Day Ya film, Before I Fall, and the final Hugh Jackman Wolverine film, »

Review: "Get Out" (2017) Starring Daniel Kaluuya

23 February 2017 10:28 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Mark Cerulli

This so could have been a by-the-numbers genre movie: “Sensitive boyfriend goes to meet hot girlfriend’s parents in secluded country home and mayhem ensues…” and that’s exactly what happens in Get Out, the new thriller from writer/director Jordan Peele, but in a totally unexpected way.

The film turns every horror trope on its head while tackling racist stereotypes along the way. Daniel Kaluuya is excellent as Chris, an aspiring young photographer who happens to be black. His beautiful, Ivy League-ish girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams from HBO’s Girls) is bringing him home to meet her parents for the first time – a momentous occasion in any new relationship but even more so when it’s interracial, a fact the movie meets head on. Once at the family estate, Chris feels that something is truly off – from the mind-gaming father (Bradley Whitford) and his spooky psychiatrist »

Get Out Producer Jason Blum on Jordan Peele’s Directorial Debut

23 February 2017 8:00 AM, PST | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

There are few producers who have had the overwhelming success of Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions from their early days turning Oren Peli’s low-budget Paranormal Activity into a hugely profitable franchise, followed by the equally successful Insidious and The Purge movies. Jason Blum also has an Oscar nomination notched onto his career belt for his involvement in getting Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-nominated Whiplash made, and Blumhouse were involved with bringing Jem and the Holograms to movie theaters. (Sorry, but I actually kind of liked it, even though it bombed… big time.)

Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out will be the third time Blumhouse has worked with an actor making their transition into directing, as Jason Blum handled the same duties on Joel Edgerton’s The Gift and Leigh Whannell’s Insidious: Chapter 3 a few years back.

Movie Review – Get Out (2017)

22 February 2017 7:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Get Out, 2017.

Written and Directed by Jordan Peele.

Starring Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, LilRel Howery, Betty Gabriel, Marcus Henderson, Lakeith Stanfield, and Catherine Keener

Synopsis:

A young African-American man visits his Caucasian girlfriend’s mysterious family estate.

So you want something subversive? How about a horror movie where the black guy doesn’t die first, or possibly even not at all? Wouldn’t that be a groundbreaking concept? The film in question could also deal with race relations, stereotypes among both whites and blacks, creep us out, and make us laugh hysterically. Such is the case with writer/director Jordan Peele’s (one half of the comedic duo Key and Peele, and star of last year’s kitty gangster kidnapping laugh riot Keanu) debut feature, Get Out. It’s a mind-bending film featuring everything from hypnosis to sex slave conspiracy theories.

Anyway, circling back to my opening point, »

Jordan Peele’s Second Act: How the ‘Key & Peele’ Comedy Star Became a Bonafide Horror Director With ‘Get Out’

21 February 2017 7:00 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jordan Peele’s latest career incarnation could have been fodder for “Key & Peele,” the hit Comedy Central sketch show in which he and Keegan-Michael Key skewered modern racial issues. But Peele wrote had written a horror movie about race, and it needed a director. That created a challenge: After William Crain (“Blacula”), Bill Gunn (“Ganja & Hesse”), and Ernest Dickerson (“Bones,” “The Walking Dead”), how many black horror directors can you name? (The savviest genre fans out there might also remember James Bond III, very much a real person, who directed “Def By Temptation” 27 years ago.)

Needless to say, it was slim pickings. “I first pitched this as a movie no one would make,” Peele said. “About halfway through writing the script, I realized I was the only person who could direct it.”

However, Peele’s feature directing debut, “Get Out,” also brings him into the rarified class of horror directors »

Get Out: Jordan Peele Explores Race With His Social Horror Flick

21 February 2017 7:00 AM, PST | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

After many years establishing himself as a comedian--first on Mad TV and then teaming with that show’s Keegan--Michael Key for the equally successful Comedy Central show Key and Peele--Jordan Peele has decided to go behind the camera to make his directorial debut with the horror-thriller Get Out.

It stars Daniel Kaluuya (Sicario) as Chris Washington, whose girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams of Girls) wants to take their relationship to the next level by having him meet her parents, who she hasn’t told that her boyfriend is black. At first, it doesn’t seem to matter, but as they spend the weekend together at her parent’s remote house, they’re joined by family friends who are acting equally oddly around Chris.  As Chris tries to figure out what is happening, he is led down a dark path towards something quite malevolent and deadly.

The Matrix 4: Keanu Reeves leaves the door open

Simon Brew Feb 21, 2017

Whilst there a no known plans for a new The Matrix movie, Keanu Reeves won't rule out returning...

Rumours of belated sequels to Keanu Reeves movies seem to be on a bit of a rota. Bill & Ted 3 is the one that he seems most keen to make, given that he continues to maintain that the story is pretty much in place for a new film. But every now and then, some story pops up about a possible Speed 3, or The Matrix 4. More than latter than the former.

Reeves was in the UK doing promotional work for John Wick: Chapter 2, and he came face to face with Yahoo UK as part of that. And the folks there quizzed him about returning to The Matrix at some point. His answer? Possibly.

“The Wachowskis [writers/directors of the trilogy] would have to be involved”, he insisted. »
