Box Office: ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ Off to Strong Start
Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is off to a solid start with an estimated $7 million to $8 million on its opening day at 3,765 North American sites, early estimates showed Wednesday.

Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is expected to continue to dominate domestic moviegoing. The tentpole took in $20.3 million domestically on Tuesday at 4,232 locations for the ninth-highest Tuesday of all time, down just 5% from Monday’s take. ‘Dark’ Season 2 Officially Ordered by Netflix
Dark, the eerie, stylish time-travel mystery show from Germany, just got the go-ahead for season 2 on Netflix. The series was marketed as a kind of German Stranger Things, and while it certainly shares some connections with that other Netflix hit, Dark is a bit more cerebral and a lot less nostalgic. Overall, it’s a creep-tastic show […]

Star Wars 'Last Jedi' Toy Shipments Down Sharply From 'Force Awakens'

Star Wars 'Last Jedi' Toy Shipments Down Sharply From 'Force Awakens'
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a hit, but The Force may not be as strong for Disney when it comes to merchandise sales this year.

Panjiva, a data company that tracks the giant shipping containers that arrive at U.S. ports, says 6,587 of them with Star Wars gear were shipped in the seven months leading up to The Last Jedi, but that’s down 47 percent from the seven months leading to Rogue One in 2016 and off 56 percent from the same time period ahead of The Force Awakens in 2015. Once the containers land in the U.S., these products go to Walmart, Amazon.com and every other...

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Fixes the Character Development Problem in ‘The Force Awakens’ (Commentary)
(Note: This post contains spoilers for “The Last Jedi” and “The Force Awakens.”) If there’s a major difference between “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and its predecessor, “The Force Awakens,” it’s that “The Last Jedi” moves a whole lot slower. That’s definitely not a criticism. “The Force Awakens” sprints from scene to scene, its characters barely able to take a breathe before they’re off to their next adventure, their next crisis, or their next problem to be solved. Moments in which newfound buddies Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega), or de facto mentor Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and potential apprentice.

Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga's 'A Star is Born' to Hit Theaters During 2018 Awards Season After All

Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga's 'A Star is Born' to Hit Theaters During 2018 Awards Season After All
Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born will hit theaters during awards season.

Warner Bros. announced Wednesday it is moving the film from May 18, 2018 to Oct. 5, 2018, a prime corridor for more serious, adult-skewing fare. Insiders say the decision was made after executives saw a locked cut of the film, which Cooper directed and stars in with Lady Gaga.

A Star is Born was originally set to debut Sept. 28. Several months ago, however, Warners relocated it to summer.

Cooper's film, marking his feature directorial debut, continues Hollywood's love affair with the 1937 film of the...

‘Wonder’ Star Jacob Tremblay on the Importance of Always Choosing Kind (Video)
Jacob Tremblay may only be 11 years old, but the “Wonder” actor has already learned an important life lesson: to always be kind. Coincidentally, that’s also the message conveyed in his new film, “Wonder.” The touching story follows a young boy, Auggie Pullman, who suffers from Treacher Collins syndrome, which affects the development of bones and other facial tissue and therefore causes differences in his face. “When I heard the message of the film, I was just like, ‘I gotta be a part of it,” Tremblay — who rose to fame in the 2015 thriller “Room” — told TheWrap. “If you...

‘Happy End’ Movie Review: Michael Haneke’s Latest Tackles Social Media

‘Happy End’ Movie Review: Michael Haneke’s Latest Tackles Social Media
Michael Haneke‘s “Happy End,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, lacks the historical heft of “The White Ribbon” or the emotional through-line of “Amour,” both winners of the festival’s Palme d’Or prize. It’s a more austere and enigmatic work about — among many other things — existential malaise among France’s top 1 percent. The compelling film is like the Austrian director’s answer to the age-old question, “What do you get for the man who has everything?” And though his answer is simple, one must put in the work to get there. The film follows the Laurents (as all.

Tom Hanks Was Steven Spielberg’s Secret Weapon in Making ‘The Post’

Tom Hanks Was Steven Spielberg’s Secret Weapon in Making ‘The Post’
After five films together, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are close friends. However, Hanks also serves in another essential, unpaid role on Spielberg’s sets: acting coach.

Spielberg is infamous for not rehearsing his cast, expecting them to turn up on set fully prepared to step in front of his camera. This was especially true on “The Post,” which was on a fast track, even for the efficient filmmaker: Production began May 1, less than eight months before its December 22 release date. Hanks decided to take the newsroom gang aside for some much-needed prep.

“I knew how Steve worked,” Hanks said. “I had to figure out in different circumstances how this guy made movies. So just a little forwarding could go a long way. ‘Look, let’s get together off the books over pie and coffee and read through the stuff we have. I will try to explain to you the

Gary Oldman, Joe Wright on ‘the Icon and the Myth’ of Winston Churchill (Video)

Gary Oldman, Joe Wright on ‘the Icon and the Myth’ of Winston Churchill (Video)
Be careful what you wish for. As Joe Wright started working on “Darkest Hour” in January of 2016, he thought about one day hoping to make a topical film. But Brexit, the American election and the British election weren’t far behind. So surprise! When you’re making a movie about a world leader with immense, populist presence as an orator in a time of global crisis, your movie’s bound to be topical. Wright’s choice to portray Winston Churchill in the film, Gary Oldman, was drawn to finally play the legendary wartime Prime Minister because of this specific, defining moment in Churchill’s.

T.J. Miller Accused of Harassment by Porn Star
It’s been a bumpy week for T.J. Miller.

Buzzy Startup, Magic Leap, Unveils High-End Augmented Reality Headset — Finally

WWE’s Big E Tells Us if The New Day Could Ever Turn Heel

Kids love The New Day, and WWE loves their merchandise sales — it’s a (wrestling) match made in Booty-o’s Heaven. Over their three-year history as a hugely successful three-man tag team, Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods have sold unicorn horns, cereal and ice cream pops (among other goodies, which we’re told may soon include pancake mix) primarily to children, so presenting the trio as “the “good guys” is good for business. And to a publicly traded corporation in the midst of its “PG Era,” well, you do the math on how valuable all of that family friendly twerking.

Oscars Gender Gap: Docs, Foreign Language Films Still Way More Likely to Have Female Directors
With all the buzz over woman-directed films this year — from Patty Jenkins’ blockbuster “Wonder Woman” to Greta Gerwig’s indie darling “Lady Bird” — you’d think female filmmakers would have a better shot at the Oscars this year. Far from it. Of the 274 narrative, English-language features eligible for the Academy Awards this year, only 18 percent have a female director or co-director, according to an analysis by TheWrap. Similarly, just 19 percent of 26 eligible animated features have at least one woman at the helm. The odds are twice as strong for women in documentary features, where 35 percent of...

'Bill Frisell: A Portrait': Film Review

Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell is a player distinctive enough to make fans even among music lovers who think they could happily die without ever hearing another guitar solo. From all indications, he's also that very rare genius who's a lovely guy — a soft-spoken, readily smiling man who is endearing company for the nearly two hours of Emma Franz's Bill Frisell: A Portrait. Less a biography than a hangout film interspersed with well-recorded in-studio performance footage, the documentary will play well in one-off bookings to those of us who've kept Frisell in demand both on stages and on record.

Eminem, Beyonce, The Weeknd Reported to Headline Coachella 2018

A website that has broken the news of Coachella’s headliners for the last two years reports that 2018’s stars will be Eminem, Beyonce and The Weeknd. Consequence of Sound notes that this would be the first time in the nearly two decades of the Southern California desert festival that a rock band won’t headline. The site first reported in October 2015 that the New York-based dance-punk outfit LCD Soundsystem would headline Coachella 2016 as the start of a reunion tour. The site was lambasted by the band’s representatives but ultimately were proven correct when James Murphy and company joined the semi-reunited Guns.
