Meet the ‘Moana’ Producer Who Helped Disney Animate Female Empowerment

3 November 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Disney’s “Moana” (opening November 23rd) boasts several animation breakthroughs: It will be the first major movie ever translated into Tahitian; the teenage heroine (voiced by Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) has no love interest; and, it’s the first CG feature directed by Disney hand-drawn vets John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”).

Moana” also marks the feature producing debut of Osnat Shurer, who was in charge of the shorts program at Pixar (“Lifted,” “One Man Band,” “Boundin'”), and later jumped to Disney to head development before getting the promotion. However, Musker said her pre-Pixar experience was just as valuable; before she joined the animation house in 2002, she’d served as an independent documentary producer with shoots in India, Tibet, China, Japan, Israel, and Turkey.

Christmas 2016: the major movies heading to cinemas

25 October 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Rob Leane Oct 28, 2016

Looking ahead to the movies heading to cinemas in time for Christmas...

The festive season is a great time to go to the pictures. There’s nothing quite like taking solace when it’s cold outside by cramming in with some like-minded folk to see a (hopefully) great movie.

Unsurprisingly, Hollywood studios have cottoned on to this. Year on year, there seems to more and more choice at the cinema come Christmas time. It’s almost like a second summer season, in terms of the sheer volume of major movies on offer. This isn’t likely to change any time soon, especially when you look at the cash banked by Star Wars: The Force Awakens last Christmas. And that's not to mention the festive season's nearness to the Oscar race, which means that the major movies keep coming well into January.

There are many movies rocking around the multiplex during this Yuletide, »

Meet Dwayne Johnson's Maui in New Moana Clip

17 October 2016 2:30 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The upcoming animated adventure Moana will introduce fans to Disney's new princess, the title character voiced by Auli'i Cravalho. As we get closer to the November 23 release, the studio has released a clip and TV spot showing that Moana isn't your typical Disney heroine. This latest scene features title character standing her ground after first meeting the legendary Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson.

This sneak peek, which arrives courtesy of Walt Disney Animation Studios YouTube, features Moana trying to introduce herself to Dwayne Johnson's Maui, although he keeps interrupting, correcting her with his full title. Maui mistakenly thinks that Moana just wants an autograph, which he signs using Hei Hei the Rooster (Alan Tudyk), while making a humorous social media joke. Maui finds out soon thereafter that Moana is not to be trifled with.

Disney’s ‘Moana’ Trailer: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho Embark on an Epic Adventure [Video]

15 September 2016 10:15 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The new trailer for Disney’s Polynesian princess film “Moana” begins with a voiceover that lays out the grounds for an epic adventure story:

“For generations this peaceful island has been home to our family,” an ancient-sounding voice rasps. “But beyond our reef, a great danger is coming. Legend tells of a her who will journey to find the demigod Maui. And together they will save us all.”

And just like that, the title character, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, meets Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and the two band together and hit the high seas.

“Maui, shape-shifter, demigod of the wind and sea, I am…” Moana begins to address her esteemed companion.

“… hero of men,” Maui cuts her off just to make sure she knows his full title.

While Maui possesses shape-shifting abilities in the air, Moana is in tune with the water.

Sneak Peek at Fall’s Big-Budget Animated Oscar Pack

14 September 2016 11:40 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

For the studios, 2016 has mostly been about the year of the animal, highlighted by Disney’s billion-dollar “Zootopia” and Pixar’s “Finding Dory” (the new all-time animation box office leader).

However, the year culminates with another potentially strong Disney Oscar contender, “Moana” (November 23), along with two musicals: Illumination’s “Sing” (December 21), which played to cheering crowds this week at the Toronto Film Festival, and DreamWorks’ “Trolls” (Nov. 4). Warner Bros., meanwhile, offers the buddy comedy, “Storks” (September 23), which has attracted good world of mouth for its humor.

Disney explores new territory with the Polynesian-themed “Moana,” the first foray into CG for directors John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”), who push the legacy in a new direction with contemporary appeal.

'Moana' -- Here's What We Know So Far About Disney's Next Big Family Movie

8 September 2016 2:30 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

As we draw closer to the release of Moana, we're getting a better idea of what to expect when the next animated adventure from Disney hits theaters. The company has been on a creative roll lately, especially since Wreck-It Ralph emerged to big success in 2012. Since then, we've seen Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Zootopia all score with critics and audiences alike. Moana marks the first feature in seven years by directors Ron Clements and John Musker, who've enjoyed a long and storied career at Disney. Their early efforts included The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin. Their last movie was The Princess and the Frog in 2009. Clements and Musker began developing Moana in 2011, based on their own original idea. The movie's creative team traveled...

‘Moana’: How Disney Animation Vets Created a Badass Polynesian Princess

7 September 2016 11:34 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Disney began the year by capturing the diversity and inclusion zeitgeist with the billion dollar “Zootopia,” and concludes the year by embracing new cultural heritage with the Polynesian-themed “Moana” (November 23).

For long-time Disney directors John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”), it was an opportunity to explore CG for the first time while pushing the princess legacy in a new direction: following “Tangled” and “Frozen” with a film with contemporary appeal.

The free-spirited, teenage Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) possesses strong navigational skills and is determined to sail out on a dangerous mission to save her island and eradicate its isolation. She’s also a capable warrior, taking on a ship full of tiny coconut pirates called Kakakora.

And although she’s joined by the shape-shifting demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson)— a reluctant sidekick at first — their relationship remains strictly platonic.

International Moana Trailer Reveals the Origins of a Disney Princess

20 July 2016 5:33 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Fans will be introduced to a new Disney princess when Moana hits theaters on November 23. We've already seen the first trailer for this animated adventure, and today we have a new Japanese trailer that travels back to Moana's childhood, showing how this princess was born. Hopefully we'll see even more footage soon, revealing how Moana's bond with the sea was formed.

Back in In April, Dwayne Johnson revealed that he will be singing in Moana, as part of his role portraying the demigod Maui. Unfortunately, this trailer doesn't feature any of the tunes sung by The Rock, but hopefully the next batch of footage will show Dwayne Johnson belting out some tunes. This video, which surfaced on the Disney Japan Facebook sets the stage for a new Disney princess to be crowned. Auli'i Cravalho will make her feature debut as Moana, who was discovered through her singing. An Oahu, »

New international trailer for Disney’s Moana

Disney has released an international trailer for John Musker and Ron Clements’ (The Princess and the Frog) CG animated feature Moana, which gives us a peek into the titular character’s relationship with the ocean. Check it out here…

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one today knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds.

The Ocean Becomes Alive in New Trailer For Disney’s ‘Moana’

Following up thier monster hit Zootopia, Disney Animation is back this winter with Moana, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog). As seen in the first trailer earlier this summer, it follows our title character (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) who is guided by the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an adventure in the South Pacific.

A second trailer has now arrived hailing from Japan and focusing solely on Baby Moana. It introduces some of the more magical touches as the Pacific Ocean becomes alive, fully interacting with the character. Also featuring a script co-written by Taika Waititi and music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, check out the new trailer and international posters below.

Trailer Trashin’: Set Sail in the Teaser Trailer for Disney’s Moana

18 June 2016 9:18 PM, PDT | CinemaNerdz | See recent CinemaNerdz news »

The summer movie season continues this week with the releases of Finding Dory and Central Intelligence. In the meantime, the latest Trailer Trashin’ column takes a look at the first teaser trailer for Disney’s upcoming animated film Moana.

Premise: In ancient Oceania in the South Pacific, the young princess Moana Waialiki (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) is a born navigator who sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson).

My take: Two-thousand sixteen is a big year for fans of Walt Disney Animation Studios, because two films are being added to Disney’s animated features canon this year, the already-released Zootopia and the upcoming Moana. This has only happened twice before in the history of Disney; in 2000, when Dinosaur and The Emperor’s New Groove both came out, and way back in »
