Comic Book Review – Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency: A Spoon Too Short #3

Villordsutch reviews Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency: A Spoon Too Short #3…

After the last issue [read our review here] in which Dirk Gently so proudly announced, “solved it!” after he’d spoken with Mwassa – a large female elephant – in regards to the Kingdom-Brown family and the Tribe in Africa both losing the ability to speak, we’ve been left an entire month to see what has been written by Mwassa.

Before we get to the wrinkled, grey cows words of wisdom we once again arrive back in Dirk’s past, fifteen year prior. Here we find Dirk strapped to a disc, blindfolded with a sock and dozens of television screens all pointing towards him, shining with numerous images.  An anonymous General is asking Dirk to use his powers; when the disc begins to spin rapidly, Dirk screams “This is 9-1-1” back at the General and promptly vomits like a grotesque Catherine Wheel. »

Comic Book Review – Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #5

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #5…

In last month Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #4 [read our review here], we left our group of cadets lost in time, bow-to-bow with the Nx-05 Slayton (which has been declared missing for nigh on 100 years), both ships now trapped within the strange anomaly that has been classified as Wagner-219. It seemed that the Cadets and the Slayton’s desperate crew would possibly be perishing together until their end of days.  Now in this climactic end to the first opening chapter in the series from Mike Johnson and Ryan Parrott, we’ll see how these two gentlemen shall bring it to a close.

After the cadets aboard the A-317 appear to be coming to the aid of the stranded Slayton, the mutinous uprising – lead back Jack Somers – is put on hold.  It soon becomes apparent however that both ships are now stranded within this energy-draining, time-altering anomaly.  However, »

Kevin Smith’s Yoga Hosers gets R-rating over cartoon testicles

It looks like Kevin Smith has run foul of the Motion Picture Association of America once again, with the filmmaker taking to Instagram to announce that his latest film Yoga-Hosers has been slapped with an R-rating. However, this time it’s not down to foul language or gratuitous nudity, but rather a cartoon drawing of a pair of testicles…

See Also: Kevin Smith responds to the negative reviews for Yoga Hosers

The #MPAA gave my kids movie @YogaHosers an R rating for a cartoony drawing of testicles on a book cover. So now, for the 4th time in my 22 year career, we will hold an appeals screening with the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board and try to get the R overturned for a less severe (and far more appropriate) PG-13. I also ran afoul of the MPAA the first time I made a movie set in a convenience store, »

Blu-ray Review – Tootsie (1982)

Tootsie,1982.

Directed by Sydney Pollack.

Starring Dustin Hoffman, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Teri Garr, Charles Gaynes, Jessica Lange, Bill Murray, and Sydney Pollack.

Synopsis:

A New York actor’s volatile reputation keeps him unemployed, which forces him to adopt a new identity as a woman to secure any roles.

With transgender rights being such a hot and important topic in the modern era, Tootsie marks as a befitting, albeit a likely coincidence, Criterion release a Blu-ray for this week. The film follows the talented, yet hostile actor Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) who comes from the old Method-style of acting from yesteryear, and he cannot adapt to the contemporary (1980s) mode of the homogenised, easily relatable/identifiable performers. His long-suffering agent George (Sydney Pollack) explains that Michael has burnt every bridge and nobody will hire him. Michael hears of an audition from a friend, and one of his acting students Sandy »
