EXCLUSIVE: June Pictures has come aboard to produce and finance Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, the writer-director’s follow-up feature to his awards-season hit Tangerine. It is the second film attached to Andrew Duncan and Alex Saks’ production outfit June Pictures, which recently launched to finance and produce features and documentaries, feature-length narrative and documentary films.

June PicturesICM Partners reps Baker and domestic rights to the pic. Saks exited as an agent at ICM Partners in February to become president of June Pictures, where her former client Duncan is CEO. The company already has finished production on Dude, an Olivia Milch-directed drama comedy that stars Lucy Hale, Kathryn Prescott, Alexandra Shipp, Nora Lum and Ronen Rubinstein.

The Florida Project is about a precocious 6-year-old and her rag-tag group of close friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility, and a sense of adventure, while their parents and the adults around them struggle with hard times. Baker and his Tangerine co-writer Chris Bergoch penned the screenplay. Cast will be announced soon ahead of a summer production start on location in Florida.

Baker and his Cre Film banner are producing with Bergoch, Duncan and Saks as well as Kevin Chinoy and Francesca Silvestri of Freestyle Picture Co.

Baker shot Tangerine on the streets of Hollywood using an iPhone, and it was exec produced by the Duplass Brothers. This one will be shot in 35mm.
