On DSLRs when Live View was first introduced, if shooting in live view via the rear scree, you had to cap the viewfinder to prevent stray light entering the camera during exposure. It wasn't a problem when you used the OVF, because your eye blocked out light from entering.

This is obviously a different, yet familiar problem.

On my first Live View DSLR, a Canon 5D mk2 I think, the camera strap had a a rubber cap to seal the OVF.

That's not quite right as during live view the mirror is raised so any light entering doesn't affect the exposure. The real problem is when not using live view but the camera is on the tripod and using an auto exposure mode. Then the light can get in via the viewfinder and affect the exposure before the shutter is fired. Goes back to film days too.

Most cameras included a viewfinder cap in the box (usually got lost) to use in this situation, and a few pro cameras had viewfinder blinds built into the viewfinder itself, operated by a little lever.

Yes that's true Nick, but there were some reported issues with some early live view cameras too. I'm pretty sure one of them was Canon as I remember a thread about back when I was shooting Canon and that's when I discovered the VF cover.

Anyone can get into a mess, It's how you get out of it that matters, and what you learn.
