Movie Review – Son of Saul (2015)

Son of Saul, 2015.

Directed by László Nemes.

Starring Géza Röhrig, Lvente Molnár, Urs Rechn, Todd Charmont, Jerzy WalczakSándor Zsótér, Marcin Czarnik, Uwe Lauer and Christian Harting.

Synopsis:

Auschwitz, 1944: a Jewish Hungarian, who burns the corpses of his own people, recognises a young boy from the crematorium and seeks a Rabbi for a proper burial.

The film opens with text to contextualise its story. In its confidence and respect for the audience, it doesn’t waste its runtime on the historic facts and the atrocities of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust – most patrons entering this picture will be acquainted with such knowledge. On such an extensively covered chapter in history this film offers a bleak experience of human endurance, and is stark reminder of why it’s important to remind ourselves of this.

It begins out of focus, in a tranquil setting of birds chirping, and a moment of »

Rumour: James Wan feels “trepidation” about directing Aquaman

According to a new report from Devin Faraci over at Birth. Movies. Death., Seth Grahame-Smith, who recently dropped out as helmer on 2018’s The Flash due to “creative differences,” may not be the only DC film director who’s leaving the universe behind. Faraci claims that sources close to 2018’s Aquaman at Warner Bros. have informed him that director James Wan is “feeling a tremendous amount of trepidation” about the film.

Wan’s role as director of the film was confirmed in June 2015, when he was coming off of a string of hit movies, including Insidious, The Conjuring, Insidious: Chapter 2 and Furious 7, but if his reservations toward Aquaman continue, it’s unclear if he will brave the potential troubles or follow in similar footsteps as Grahame-Smith.

Regardless of whether or not Wan stays on board the project, he still has two WB movies due out in the next few months, »

The Flash loses director Seth Grahame-Smith over ‘creative differences’

As Warner Bros.’ Dceu is just getting started, The Flash has just lost its director, Seth Grahame-Smith, over ‘creative differences’ according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Grahame-Smith is the author of the parodies Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter as well as the screenwriter for their film adaptations. He is primarily a screenwriter and Flash would have been his directorial debut. There is no word yet on what these creative differences might have been, but perhaps WB were a little wary of letting a first-time director have control over such a hot property. Though Grahame-Smith has left the film as its director, WB will still retain his script, one he worked off of a treatment written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Even though he’s left The Flash, Grahame-Smith is also involved with several other WB projects. He’s been tapped as the screenwriter for The Lego Batman Movie, »

20th Century Fox skipping San Diego Comic-Con over piracy concerns

If you’re attending the San Diego Comic-Con this July and hoping to get a glimpse of some of 20th Century Fox’s upcoming projects, you’ll be disappointed to hear that the studio won’t be presenting in Hall H this year due to concerns about piracy.

According to The Wrap, Fox has made the decision as it feels it cannot prevent leaks of its exclusive footage and trailers (last year, the footage shown for both Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse made its way online within days of the con). The report also suggests that Fox’s upcoming movies such as Assassin’s Creed, Wolverine 3 and Maze Runner: The Death Cure are too far down the release schedule for the footage to be finished.

It has also been speculated that Walt Disney Pictures will be giving Hall H a miss this year, although a rep for Disney has denied those rumours. »
