Penelope Cruz Faces Adversity In New U.S. Trailer For Julio Medem's 'Ma Ma'

13 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Guided by a go for broke performance from Penélope Cruz, lovely work from cinematographer Kiko de la Rica, and a score by Alberto Iglesias, the ingredients are all here for Julio Medem's "Ma Ma" to be something special. Unfortunately, I really didn't like it when it screened at Tiff last fall, but fans of Cruz may want to give it a whirl, because she gives in a solid turn, even if she deserves better material. From director Julio Medem ("Sex & Lucia"), the movie follows Magda, who goes through no shortage of health, romantic, and professional turmoil, but remains resilient and optimistic through it all, as she always finds a way to work through life's struggles and heartbreaks. Here's the official synopsis:  Academy Award®-winning actress and producer Penélope Cruz delivers an extraordinarily emotional performance in ma ma, the newest film from acclaimed director Julio Medem (Sex And LUCÍA). Honoring the high. »

Tribeca Review: Neo-Noir 'Detour' Starring Tye Sheridan, Bel Powley And Emory Cohen

13 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

If any one of the ‘90s Quentin Tarantino copycats remade “Sliding Doors,” this neo-noir would be the result, even down to the casting of John Lynch, who starred in the 1998 film. Filled with would-be-witty dialogue, “Detour” takes a Choose Your Own Adventure approach to its twist-filled narrative about a college student whose attempts for revenge go very wrong. Director Christopher Smith employs split screen to show what happens when his hero makes a decision and flips back in time when it wants to show the audience just how little they know. “Detour” isn’t just notable for its structure and style, but for the casting of three promising young actors, even if it doesn't put them all to good use. This ‘90s throwback begins with a shot of Bel Powley ringing around a stripper pole to Goldfrapp’s “Stranger.” The camera is static, and Powley — one of last year’s »

Tribeca 2016: Five Questions for Keep Quiet Directors Joseph Martin and Sam Blair

13 hours ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

A role reversal so outrageous it could only be a work of nonfiction, the story of Csanad Szegedi, an infamous member of Hungary’s conservative Jobbik party, is as preposterously true as they come. A former Holocaust denier and anti-Semite, Szegedi now lives as a practicing Orthodox Jew determined to honor his familial past (his grandparents were Jewish). Fascinated by this turnaround, filmmakers Joseph Martin and Sam Blair created Keep Quiet, an in-depth study of the new life of Szegedi and co-lead Rabbi Boruch Oberlande, as a portrait of internal religious tension and the endless trying struggle to right one’s wrongs. As Keep […] »

Tribeca 2016: Exploring the Virtual Arcade

14 hours ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Tribeca is still a young festival — its fifteenth edition just wrapped last week — and though originally traditional films constituted its entire focus, soon transmedia, interactive work, and then virtual reality gained enough prominence that by 2016 they were as integral a part of the proceedings as the film screenings. This year more Vr was on view than ever before at Storyscapes, the Interactive Playground, and the Virtual Arcade that together ran the length of the entire festival, and by and large the breadth and quality of the projects testify to the burgeoning craft of Vr artists as the medium continues […] »

David Simon Says CIA Saga 'Legacy Of Ashes' Might Be His Next Project

14 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

This spring, David Simon, the man behind "The Wire," "Homicide," and "Show Me A Hero" will get cracking on production of his '70s set porn drama "The Deuce," starring James Franco in dual roles. But Simon has much more brewing, among them, a drama set around Capitol Hill with famed journalist Carl Bernstein involved. However, what might be next on the docket is something different, a show that will peel back the layers of one of the most powerful organizations in the United States: the CIA. Chatting with Variety, Simon reveals he's working on an adaptation of the Pulitizer Prize winning book "Legacy Of Ashes" by Tim Weiner, and that it's actually the BBC taking the lead, with HBO essentially willing lend a hand for the stateside work involved in bringing the series to air. And the material is powerful stuff, with Weiner's book taking a hard look at »

Karl Urban Says He'd Be Down For A 'Dredd' Sequel On Netflix Or Amazon

15 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In the era of the internet, nothing really dies. A TV show that was swiftly cancelled, or a movie that did less than blockbuster numbers might disappear in the short term, but if it appears to have enough of a niche, cult audience that shout loud enough, it’s entirely possible that it’ll come back. It’s why we’ve seen revivals of “Firefly,” “Veronica Mars,” “Arrested Development” and similar shows, and it’s why movies as different as “Anchorman” and “John Wick” got sequels. Read Script Pages From Prince's Rejected Cameo On 'The Simpsons'

16 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Last week, we lost a musical genius and cultural titan, with the passing of Prince. The legacy he left behind him is still being measured, but needless to say it was large, and didn't just touch upon music, but film as well. "Purple Rain" brought Prince's personality and blistering songs to the big screen, and it's still mind-boggling that Warner Bros. ran with his utterly bonkers (and fantastic) soundtrack for Tim Burton's "Batman." However, Prince always moved to the beat of his drum. As the music industry turned to streaming, Prince steadfastly kept most of his catalog off those services, and when it came to "The Simpsons" — another cultural force — he declined to join other celebrities, artists, authors, and musicians from appearing on the show. Kodak and Kickstarter Launch Program for Indie Filmmakers to Shoot on Film

Despite outliers such as Alex Ross Perry and Todd Haynes, the general consensus among independent filmmakers is that shooting on film is too expensive to be feasible. We're still a long way from David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" revival, which isn't set to air on Showtime until 2017, but there is still a lot to talk about. It was just over a week ago that Go For Locations — who tweet about production and location news — said that filming had wrapped on the "first 2 seasons" of "Twin Peaks." Of course, that set off a frenzy of speculation that we're getting even more than we bargained for, with chatter only increasing when the post was deleted, and the account started protecting their tweets. Meanwhile, casting has also seen as much rumor as official word, with Lynch and co. cagey about who will be coming back, and which new faces will be arriving. Well, now we know. Not every great artist is a great podcast guest. Tribeca Interview: Director Deb Shoval And Lola Kirke Talk 'Awol,' Authentic Locations, Building A Love Story, And More

17 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The Tribeca Film Festival wrapped up this weekend, and we’ve caught quite a few great films at the fest this year. One of our favorites was “Awol,” from Deb Shoval, making her directorial feature debut. The film stars Lola Kirke as Joey, a young woman from a small, economically depressed town in Pennsylvania, who has dreams of escaping for a better life through the Army. Her plans get complicated when she becomes entangled in a torrid love affair with the married mom of two, Rayna (Breeda Wool), which lead to life changing decisions. Our review called the film an “arresting love story,” that’s “thematically rich, and confidently directed with a clear point of view, set against a backdrop of relevant socioeconomic and cultural issues.” Read More: Tribeca Review: Deeply Affecting Love Story 'Awol' Starring Lola Kirke And Breeda Wool We had a chance to sit down »
