18 September 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Jack is back. The BFI have unveiled a brand new trailer for the upcoming UK re-release of the horror classic The Shining, directed by the one-and-only Stanley Kubrick. A full 144-minute digitally restored version of the film will be screening in a few UK cinemas around Halloween - you can find theater listings here. While I assume we've all seen this film and are quite familiar with most of it, it's always fun to watch a new trailer for a beloved classic film. Even Rodney Ascher, director of the Room 237 doc, commented on Twitter: "Impressive new trailer!" The Shining stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson, Philip Stone & Joe Turkel. Redrum. "Demands to be seen on the big screen." Here's the new re-release trailer for Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, direct from BFI's YouTube: A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where »

After terrifying audiences worldwide with the blockbuster J-horror classic Ring and its sequel, director Hideo Nakata returned to the genre for Dark Water, another highly atmospheric, and critically acclaimed, tale of the supernatural which took the common theme of the "dead wet girl" to new heights of suspense and drama.

‘The Shining’ Re-Release Trailer: The Rum Is Still Red in Stanley Kubrick’s Horror Classic

15 September 2016 2:55 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The Shining” is one of a select few films worthy of being called the scariest ever made, not that Stephen King would agree — the author has famously referred to Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of his novel as the work of a man who “thinks too much and feels too little.” He’s firmly in the minority, however, and among those in the bag for “The Shining” are the folks at BFI, who are re-releasing the 1980 masterwork in UK theaters next month. Watch their new trailer for the film below.

A Fine Pair And The Limits Of Claudia Love

11 September 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Trailers from Hell | See recent Trailers from Hell news »

This fall semester I started taking an Italian language class two evenings a week with my daughter, and Thursday night I was looking to decompress after our first big quiz. (Scores haven’t been revealed yet, but I think we did just fine.) So I started rummaging through my shelves and came across the Warner Archives DVD of Francesco Maselli’s A Fine Pair (1968), an ostensibly breezy romantic caper comedy which reteams Rock Hudson and Claudia Cardinale, a pairing their public was presumably clamoring for after their previous outing together in Blindfold (1965), a Universal programmer written and directed by Phillip Dunne, the screenwriter of, among many other notable movies, How Green Was My Valley. I’ve had a mad crush on Claudia ever since I first saw her in Circus World (1964) with John Wayne when I was but a youngster, and I always welcome the chance to visit movies of »

Stanley Kubrick's daughter has a message for all the moon landing conspiracy theorists

6 July 2016 1:04 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Conspiracy theorists have long held that Stanley Kubrick helped fake the 1969 moon landing under the direction of the U.S. government, and now his daughter Vivian has come out to blast the rumors as "a grotesque lie." "There are many, very real conspiracies that have happened throughout our history...But, claims that the moon landings were faked and filmed by my father? I just can't understand it!!?" railed Kubrick in a tweet timed to the news that Nasa's Juno spacecraft had reached Jupiter after a nearly five-year journey. "How can anyone believe that one of the greatest defenders of mankind would commit such an act of betrayal?" Suggestions that Kubrick was approached by the U.S. government to "direct" the moon landing during post-production of 1968's 2001: A Space Odyssey have been around since before the director's death in 1999, but the claims have been roundly debunked; most recently, a video »

Stanley Kubrick’s Daughter Addresses Moon Landing Conspiracy Theory

6 July 2016 11:39 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As conspiracy theorists would have it, the biggest project that director Stanley Kubrick helmed is the Apollo 11 moon landing of 1969.

For decades, fringe groups have held that the U.S government hired Kubrick to shoot the “fake moon landing.” Now, as Nasa’s Juno probe is expected to reach Jupiter this week, Kubrick’s daughter, Vivian, took to Twitter stating “this feels like the right time to respond.”

“There are many, very real conspiracies that have happened throughout our history,” Vivian Kubrick wrote. “But, claims that the moon landings were faked and filmed by my father? I just can’t understand it!!?”

Vivian Kubrick Addresses Conspiracy Theory That Stanley Kubrick Faked The Moon Landing

If Rodney Ascher‘s documentary “Room 237” taught us anything, it’s that there is a strong fringe group of people who have very well thought out, but completely harebrained conspiracy theories that Stanley Kubrick faked the Apollo 11 moon landing. According to certain tinfoil hat wearing types, Kubrick was hired by the U.S. government to shoot a […]

‘The Shining’ Anniversary: Stanley Kubrick & His Mysterious Classic

23 May 2016 11:16 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

May 23 marks the 36th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining,” one of those rare works that wasn’t a huge hit when it opened but has grown into a movie classic.

Among its many fans is Lee Unkrich, the director of Disney-Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” and the upcoming “Coco,” who says it’s one of the reasons he was inspired to become a filmmaker.

Unkrich has been collecting memorabilia for years and decided to share it with other devotees, via TheOverlookHotel.com. Since the website’s debut several years ago, other admirers have shared things with him. There are now about 700 pieces online, including photos and notes on the film’s production, as well as work inspired by the movie: paintings, sculptures, songs, perfume, clothing, vinyl figures, a skateboard, even a gingerbread house re-creating the Overlook Hotel. The site also offers a few short films, such as “Wes Anderson’s The Shining, »

'He Was a Fair Guvnor': Electrician Who Worked on 'The Shining' Recalls Stanley Kubrick's Obsessive Techniques

28 April 2016 3:54 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The level of obsession inspired by "The Shining" is almost unparalleled. "Star Wars" fans will line up for days, even weeks to catch a glimpse of the latest trip to a galaxy far, far away, but Stanley Kubrick's endlessly unsettling adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name has been picked apart from every interpretive angle imaginable — with viewers still disagreeing over how valid any of them are. (If you know not of what I speak, look up Rodney Ascher's "Room 237.") In the latest example of "Shining" obsession, The Guardian has published a first-person account written by an electrician who worked on the film as part of its "A touch with greatness" series. Among Bob Tanswell's memories are Kubrick's chess prowess, Jack Nicholson's ability to drive the director crazy and being asked to drop trou as an extra in a famously bizarre scene. Read »

If you a fan of a) Stanley Kubrick and b) all things astronomical then you’ve possibly come across the conspiracy theory that Stanley Kubrick was rumoured to have faked the Apollo 11 moon landings for the Us Government.

The conspiracy has spiraled so far out of control that the documentary Room 237 at one point brings up the theory that the late director actually gave clues to the gigantic cover up within The Shining.

And now we have Moonwalkers, a high-concept, action comedy based around this conspiracy theory and starring Ron Perlman and Rupert Grint, which is set to arrive on DVD on May 30th courtesy of Icon Film Distribution.

Watch: Discover Stanley Kubrick's Dazzling Use Of Color In This Supercut

There may never be a more precise filmmaker than Stanley Kubrick. Quite possibly the most meticulous and, arguably, most influential director in cinema, there are no happy accidents or mistakes in his films. Each comes with multitudes of planning, staging, thinking and analyzing, and his themes of paranoia can sometimes subsequently drive people mad — depending on how you read the documentary “Room 237.” And among the most distinct and impressionable details in Kubrick’s work come from his use of color, as made evident by Vimeo user Marc Anthony Figueras’ supercut “Kubrick in Color.” Read More: Watch: 9-Minute Video Essay Explores How Stanley Kubrick Observes Humanity In His Films Vividly displaying the British filmmaker’s singular vision through his use of red, blue, yellow, orange, green and black & white, namely in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “The Shining,” “Full Metal Jacket,” and “Eyes Wide Shut,” as well as “Barry Lyndon” and »

Operation Avalanche Is a Sly Act of Movie Love For and By Kubrick Fans

30 January 2016 12:03 PM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

One of the most notable Sundance premieres of the last few years was Rodney Ascher's notorious experimental documentary Room 237, a riveting exploration of four fan conspiracy theories developed around Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. The nuttiest of those theories contended that The Shining was Kubrick's secret confession about having faked the 1969 Apollo moon landing. Now comes Operation Avalanche, writer-director-star Matt Johnson's creative “mockumentary” about two hapless CIA men and film buffs who, with a key assist from their hero Kubrick… wind up faking the Apollo moon landing.Operation Avalanche is a sly little comedy-thriller, but, also like Room 237, it’s an act of movie love. “The moon landing is the greatest movie ever made,” Johnson tells me in a Sundance condo, his boyish enthusiasm echoing the eager cheerfulness of the film-buff character he plays in the movie (a character named, appropriately enough, Matt Johnson). “What piece »

Joshua’s Top Ten Films Of 2015

4 January 2016 6:00 AM, PST | CriterionCast | See recent CriterionCast news »

It’s that time of year. Sleigh bells have been rung, gifts have been given and we have officially closed the door on what was 2015. A year that saw us once again take a journey into a galaxy far, far away, revisit the post apocalyptic landscape of Mad Max and the ever expanding reach of world and documentary cinema, 2015 has been one of the greatest of film years, arguably the very best since 2007 (probably cinema’s greatest year?) and as one has likely already one hundred top [insert arbitrary number] films list, why not make it one hundred and one? Be it a group of young women attempting to break free of the backwards patriarchy that has them oppressed or a bravura, epic-length satire from one of world cinema’s foremost artists, these are the ten best films that 2015 had to offer.

Honorable mention: Have you heard about this new thing called television? »
