MISSION & OBJECTIVE
The mission of the SJIWFF is to:
- Increase the exposure of films written and/or directed by women
- Facilitate interaction between women filmmakers and their audiences
- Support and encourage women involved in all facets of film production
- Showcase the work of Newfoundland and Labrador's filmmakers to the Canadian and International film industry.
Building upon its growing reputation as a coordinator of lively, robust, intimate, efficiently run and widely enjoyable film events, the SJIWFF:
- Creates and executes professional development opportunities
- Acts as marketplace for its local industry, providing filmmakers with many points of access to the national and international film industry
- Reaches out to rural communities via its annual short film tour
- Offers youth programs to cultivate the next generation of filmmakers
- Contributes a passionate voice to the arts and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival (SJIWFF) is one of the longest running women’s film festivals in the world. Established in 1989 to support and promote women filmmakers, the SJIWFF produces screenings and industry development events throughout the year, culminating in a five-day film festival held each October in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The Festival’s dynamic events attract over 4,000 lively attendees each year. From the hundreds of submissions, we present a potent program of documentary, short and feature dramatic films.
Festival week also features an Industry Film Forum including keynote addresses, seminars, workshops and face-to-face meetings for filmmakers and producers. The Forum focuses on the business of filmmaking while the Festival celebrates local, national and international works by women.
Beyond its key event, the SJIWFF facilitates a short-film screening tour called Films On The Go, our FRAMED series of youth filmmaking workshops, and the Scene and Heard Film Industry Conference, which combines professional development workshops, screenings and live performances. SJIWFF also proudly stewards the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award, an annual peer-juried prize for the production of a six-minute film by a promising female director. The award was established in memory of friend, filmmaker and youth mentor, Michelle Jackson (1972-2008).

GENERAL RULES
SJIWFF27 takes place from October 18 - 22th, 2016. From January through May, we will accept submissions of short films 30 minutes and under for consideration.
The SJIWFF is a non-competitive festival.
2016 SHORT FILM SUBMISSION REGULATIONS:
1) Accepted Categories: Drama (may include Comedy), Documentary, Animation, Experimental
2) Short film submissions MUST:
• Have been directed and/or written by a female filmmaker. Co-gender productions will be considered.
• Be 30 minutes or under in length, including credits;
• Have been completed after June, 2015;
• Include an English language track or English language subtitles.
3) A viewing copy of your film must accompany your submission, either as a secure screener through Withoutabox, or by directing us to a secure (password-protected) Vimeo (or equivalent) link in your application. If you cannot provide a secure screener or link, indicate in your application that THREE (3) Region 0 or Region 1 NTSC format DVD copies of your film will follow your application by mail or courier to us. Include your WAB submission number with your DVDs. NOTE - we are not able to view DVDs in PAL format.
4) Complete your submission fee payment via Withoutabox, OR clearly indicate that payment is following your submission by mail or direct courier, as:
a) a personal or company cheque (Filmmakers within Canada only)
b) an international money order (Filmmakers outside of Canada).
The SJIWFF cannot process non-Canadian personal cheques.
Make cheques or international money orders payable to the St. John's International Women's Film Festival, noting your Withoutabox submission number.
5) If sending part of your submission by mail or courier, it should be postmarked no later than the submission deadline.
6) Submissions will not enter consideration until ALL of the following have been received:
• Completed Entry Form
• Submission Copy of your short film
• Entry Fee as applicable. Please note we are only able to grant fee waives to filmmakers screened at a prior SJIWFF. If requesting a fee waiver, please indicate the title and year of your last film screened with us.
SELECTION and NOTIFICATION:
• Short film entries will be viewed by the SJIWFF27 Programming Committee and submission contacts notified via email of the decision regarding their film within the first week of September, 2016.
• If selected, instructions regarding exhibition copies and promotional materials will be sent with notification of acceptance.
• Exhibition copies of selected short films will be required by the SJIWFF by Friday, September 16, 2016. Details about exhibition copy formats and sending are available on our website: womensfilmfestival.com/the-festival/submit-your-film
SUBMISSION TIPS:
• SUBMIT COMPLETE: Your film will not enter consideration until your submission is complete. Please contact us prior to the deadline if you need help to complete your submission.
• ABOUT WAIVERS: We are only able to grant fee waivers to filmmakers whose work has been screened at a prior SJIWFF. When requesting a fee waiver, it’s helpful to indicate the title and year of your last selected film.
• PROTECT YOUR WORK: If submitting your film as an online screener link, it must be secured by password. Include both link and password in your submission. The SJIWFF is not responsible for submission screeners damaged or lost in transit to us. In the instance of damage to an exhibition copy, the Festival is limited to compensating the filmmaker(s) for the cost of making a new print.
• KEEP US POSTED: If your submission contact information changes in the weeks after submitting, please update us.
• NEED DVD SUBMISSION COPIES BACK? Please include a self -addressed, prepaid envelope, or clearly note your courier account number with return address.
FEATURE-LENGTH dramas and documentaries will be selected by curation only. We are most grateful, however, to receive expressions of interest from female feature filmmakers. Please write to info@womensfilmfestival.com, including:
- Your feature film’s title
- Name of Director(s) Writer(s) and Producer(s)
- A brief synopsis
- Date of completion
- Runtime, including credits
- Status of release
- Trailer link
We will direct your email to our Programming Committee. If we are able consider your feature film for SJIWFF27 we will contact you to request a screener.
NOTE:
The SJIWFF27 Programming Committee will decide on any matters not specifically addressed by these regulations. Notice of participation implies acceptance of these regulations. In any dispute, the decision of the Festival Programming Committee will be final.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
By entering a film in the St. John's International Women's Film Festival, the entrant agrees to adhere to all SJIWFF27 rules and regulations. No selected film may be withdrawn from the Festival. Your signature indicates that you have the right to enter into this agreement. The SJIWFF will ultimately decide upon all matters no covered by these conditions.
