John Oliver explains the world, Beyonce to emerging cicadas

Last Week Tonight was off this week, but that doesn't mean John Oliver doesn't have a few minutes to explain the world to a new audience with his trademark concern-wit.  The new audience would be cicadas, who are emerging this spring and summer after spending 17 years underground. The world has changed a lot from since 1999, when they were born and the last time they were above ground, and they only have two to six weeks of life as adults, time they'll mostly spend mating. Oliver decided to do the cicadas a solid by bringing them up to speed on the last 17 years as quickly as possible, so they can get on with their sex and death frenzy.  »

One 'Game of Thrones' actor would like to apologize for last night

Did you watch last night's Game of Thrones? If not, then read no further, because spoilers abound. If so, then ...       scroll down ...                 okay, I think we're at a safe spoiler distance but just in case ...             ... omg Jon Snow is alive again! Despite the efforts of HBO and his portrayer, Kit Harington, to make us all think Jon was permanently dead, by the time Jon took that breath at the end of last night's episode, I think most people knew it was coming.  But Harington really did try to convince us that he wasn't coming back to the show. He told Entertainment Weekly last year "I'm dead. I'm not coming back next season." Then, when it was obvious that he was going to be on the new season because he'd been seen on the set, he said it was simply to do a few scenes as a corpse. Well, now Harington »

Review: The comma's the thing as 'Veep' heads to 'Nev-ad-a'

A few thoughts on last night's Veep coming up just as soon as I tell you that the Nazis' polling numbers within Germany were through the roof... Though "Nev-ad-a" never settles on a consistent pronunciation for the eponymous battleground state, it does a nice job of advancing the recount storyline — here bringing in Martin Mull as Ben's mentor, Bob "The Eagle" Bradley, who once treated Ben (aka "Benny and the Jizz") the way the whole group treats Jonah now — while also putting other new stories and characters in play. In particular, John Slattery's a welcome addition to the recurring cast as Selina's new love interest Charlie Baird, whose relationship goes from secret to incredibly public because Mike's cleanse lowered his defenses too much at the wrong moment. Dan having sex with Amy's sister because he misheard her and assumed she works for CBS rather than Cvs was at once »

Review: Did 'Silicon Valley' present the most graphic sex scene in HBO history?

A few thoughts on last night's Silicon Valley coming up just as soon as I simply imagine my skeleton is me, and my body is my house... With this show, the default setting involves things working out badly for Richard. So the only question becomes exactly how a seemingly great situation will turn to horse manure. "Two in the Box" does a hilarious, agonizing job of leading us there, as we discover that Jack cares more about the company's short-term value than he does about Richard's vision of competing with Google and Facebook, prioritizing sales people — and giving them something easy to sell — over building the Pied Piper platform the way everyone had planned. That the full revelation of Jack's vision occurs while we are all watching two horses have vigorous sex — possibly the most graphic sex scene in HBO history — is at once shocking and incredibly Silicon Valley, since »

Could 'Game of Thrones' have done what it did tonight any better?

A review of tonight's Game of Thrones coming up just as soon as you punch me in the face the next time I have an idea like that... "We all fail sometimes." -Jaime You guys... Jon Snow is alive! I know, I know... I'm as shocked as you are. Which is to say, not particularly shocked, and slightly disappointed at how "Home" presented the resurrection we all knew was coming. Look, George R.R. Martin did the show no favors with that particular cliffhanger. Even before the Nsa started tracking Kit Harington's movements in and out of Belfast, GoT fandom at large had all come to the conclusion that Jon Snow's death wouldn't stick, since it would be awful storytelling to eliminate the only relevant character in what was increasingly turning out to be the most important locale in the entire show(*). And most of us assumed that Melisandre would probably be involved, »

Game of Thrones: Everything Happened In This Episode

Warning: Full spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 6, episode 2 "Home" follow... It was a packed episode of Game of Thrones tonight and there is a great deal to talk about. First and foremost, the moment we've all been waiting for has happened, but what's especially notable is that Jon Snow returned to us during an episode that opened on Bran gazing upon his father, his uncle Benjen Stark, and his aunt Lyanna. That sequence is likely foreshadowing a great deal of what will play out for Jon Snow this season both at the Wall and in terms of his larger role to play in this world. It looks as though we're likely going to see one of the most significant and prevalent fan theories come to life. In the video above or below Roth Cornet and Donna Dickens talk about Snow's return, giants, Frakenmountain, Draaaaggggoooons, and the Game of Thrones »

Follow along or flee in fear. Here there be spoilers! Catch up on Episode One, 'The Red Woman,' over here. ******************** [8:55Pm Edt] - Everyone head to the bathroom, get your snack, and gird your lore loins. Tonight, we Finally see Bran again.
