Any Little League batter knows not to hold the bat that way. Surely a professional should know better:

Always keep the seal on the top, i.e., swing with the grain aligned with the direction of the swing -- unless you WANT the bat to break.

Giants pitchers are awesome. They throw hard stuff.

They went on to win the World Series that year, in one of the best World Series ever.

It is obvious to me that the bat broke a millisecond (?) before this image.

At the instant of this image, the ball has started reacting to the contact and is moving away from the batter. This fact is supported by the lack of compression of the ball. The outboard end of the bat is also moving away from the gripped portion of the bat along with the ball.

If you image the sequence:
(1) ball contacts the bat (and compresses - by probably at least 10-15%)
(2) bat fractures (at the location shown in this image)
(3) bat and ball energy balance
(4) ball changes direction (and decompresses as it moves away from the bat)
(5) loose (outboard) portion of bat follows bat away from the batter (the moment of this image).

That was a full, not a check swing (I was there; trust me!)
I was also confused initially when I saw my photo.

However, there are physics to explain why a bat broken with a full swing typically looks like the one in my picture:

Note in the above reference video, that Hunter Pence hit safely while his bat broke, and his bat momentarily appears similar to the broken bat in my picture!

How can the bat broke that way...should be the other way around, the crack opening in front??

Batter is trying to check his swing. The force of trying to stop the bat in full swing, in a very short time period, is greater than the force of the full swing, which is over a much longer distance. The ball contacting the bat is just a fortunate coincidence, and has nothing to do with the bat breaking.
